Need Advice changing to Lantus
by housecats4 »

Hi I have this lady who has her cat on Caninsulin I told her I have everything she needs to change him to Lantus. Freddie is a 10 year old who has been on this stuff for 2 years. He was getting 15 u twice a day. She cut him back to 12 u twice a day she said she is trying to go 12 hours because that is what I did for Trey. He is peeing a lot and is not grooming I told her this could be too much insulin He is a dry food cat so good thing or he would most likely not be here. She does not home test yet but she is willing to give it a try. I told her I had lots of info for her. Just want to know what is the first step we should do . Should she stop the other insulin for a few days while trying to get him on can food. I really want to help but need advice. She is an older lady and don`t have a computer so I said I would ask the question and get her the answer. Ok she is going to call me in the next day or two. So how do we start Thanks so much. I have been with Lantus 4 months he was only on Lantus 2 months and my cat Trey is OTJ for 1 month...If you need more infor please let me know..Kath & TreyTrey`s Spreadsheet

I'm new so I don't have any advice, but this response will bump you to the top of the list--hopefully a more experienced person will be able to help more. The one thing I would recommend is, if you haven't already, to start with those stickies at the top of the list. There's a lot of helpful information in there.

Good luck.

Not having a computer will be an obstacle for her...but it is still doable Kath.
Is there a way you can print out the information in the stickies for her?
Does she have a vet that she goes to...or can she go to yours if you like your vet?

We don't know if she is using old Vetsulin or not. (sometimes people just keep using the same vial and they are not aware that it has expired. They keep upping the dose and the numbers are still awful because the insulin is toast.) She doesn't have to stop the other before she starts Lantus...she can just start at the next shot time with the new insulin.
BUT, Canninsulin is a different strength...it is U40 and the Lantus is U100 so she will definitely need new syringes. She should get the ones with half unit markings.

The dry food is an issue and if she can switch to the LC foods it will be good for her kitty of course. But you are right in that it probably has helped keep the kitty alive with all that Canninuslin. If it is still potent that is.

Printing out a SS would be good for her too once she knows how to home test.
That is the one thing that you should stress with her...you know how important testing is!!!

I would suggest she start all over again with 1.0u bid though. She should not do the same dose as the Canninsulin until she can monitor how the cat is responding. That is my thought on it though and hopefully someone else will add their thoughts. Are you able to show her how to test??? That would be very helpful. It is kind of you to try to help her...but for now, that's all I can think of...until you get more information...hope that helps a little...

OK a Insulin is new she goes through a vile every 2 weeks. She said her cats don`t like can food. I am ready with a lot of stickes I printed off. Yes I will show her how to home test and told her I can come a few days to get her started. Good idea ss sheet will pring one off. I have my pen and lots of pen needles so she can start on that it she wants.or we will pick up needles Thanks Kath
