Afternoon all,

Well i woke up this morning and went to the kitchen to get all of Leo's stuff ready, usually he's there with me flopping around on his testing equipment and begging me to hurry up and feed him breffis.....but no Leo this morning. So i haul him outta bed and bring him into the kitchen with me and get a 140 for his AMPS, and he wasn't hungry.....me thinks someone just finished off his midnight snack just before his shot time, i left out waaaay too much food for him last night. We had a good test, and shot with no breffis eaten, i got outta bed at his +3 and fed him some new food.... he ate it up right away, i don't think FF chunky chicken is a favorite anymore. He's been having higher numbers than usual lately and I'm not sure if this is NDW, bad juice or i'm just feeding him too high of food. I plan on opening a new pen tonight as the current one has been in and out of the fridge every other day for hours at a time due to Leo and I travelling back and forth to his grandparents, i always pack it in a lunch bag with an ice pack that carries Leo's testing stuff, syringes and insulin, i try not to place the insulin right next to the ice pack because i don't want it to freeze, but maybe its a little too warm.....who knows?!?!?!

Anyhoo his ear still looks bad this morning and he's been scratching every chance he gets, its red, swollen and sometimes bleeding so i booked a vetty visit for this afternoon, what is the consensus on a steroid cream?? I have a feeling that's what we'll be getting, i don't think its ear mites because the sore spot is located in front of his ear kinda to the top of his eye. Plus he's had ear mites a few times before and this looks nothing like ear mites.

I'll check back in after the vet visit to let you all know what the word is on his ears.

Re: 9/1 Leo AMPS 140, +3 113, +7 97~vet visit today

Mr. Leo is getting used to you being home. Uhoh! Poor guy. You haven't told him yet have you? We will miss you too. It is much easier if I know you are home and will get on every now and then. Thank you so much for all of your thoughts this week. They have really really meant a lot to me and I could never have made it through without you.

Sending lots of good thoughts for the vetty visit today!! Hope Leo passes with flying colors and it's just a simple fix.

Re: 9/1 Leo AMPS 140, +3 113, +7 97~vet visit today

Tracy, hoping the vet visit goes well today. Simon has been scratching alot and I am trying to find out what is wrong. The vet says it is not ear mites. He also has a sore spot right where Leo's is on the top of his head, but not his ear. I am ruling out allergies and also checking to see if it is a staph infection. If you get some good answers from your vet, I would be really interested to hear what he/she says. Leo is looking great today with his numbers!!

Hi Tracy,

Just my two cents on the steroid cream. If it's some kind of wound, steroids aren't the answer (although many docs will try....). Let me know if that's what it is and I can give you some recommendations on products that will help.

If the vet feels like it's a reaction to something or an allergy, steroids would definitely help, but with cats, you can get a pretty good response with antihistamines (topical benadryl for example) with less potent side effects. As FYI, antihistamines will still have some side effects, such as drowsiness, but that's vastly preferable to what we know steroids can do. With a diabetic kitty, I would avoid steroids at all costs.

If it's fungal or parasitic....well there's meds for that too that aren't steroids!

Hope all goes well!!

Re: 9/1 Leo AMPS 140, +3 113, +7 97~vet visit today

Well we are back from the vetty visit! We didn't see our usual Dr. as he was at the other clinic they have. We saw a new Dr. and she was wonderful!!!! She's young and very enthusiastic.

First thing, he does not have ear mites, parasites, or anything bacterial. Dr. Andrea asked if Leo had been in contact with any animal that had fleas, as she thought Leo had flea bites......my sister just left last week and i'm sure some of you will remember me talking about Leo's dog cousin Daisy (she's a jack russell terrier) who was also visiting and staying with us. Well the first night DS and Daisy came over, DS noticed that Daisy had fleas jumping around her neck area......then Daisy proceeded to rub herself all over the carpet and my couch as well  Daisy and Leo travelled together a few times, were together for a few days. Leo got a dose of Revolution, so hopefully that clears up those bites.

We also talked at length about Leo getting a dental, the clinic will be getting an xray machine in 3-4 weeks and Leo is slated to be the first xray patient. The vet did give me a quote for the dental, she had Metacam on the quote, i told her "no freakin way in hell is Leo getting Metacam, it has a blackbox warning for kidney failure in cats" And you know she talked and talked about how great Metacam is, she almost had me convinced to give Leo it. She said that she only gives a half dose after the dental and if we don't give Leo Metacam he will suffer a sore, throbbing mouth. Bupe will also be prescribed, but no antibiotics before and after. Leo has seen 2 different vets at this clinic since his FD dx and both never noticed that his teeth were bad, Dr. Andrea showed me Leo's cracked canine (with the pulp showing), teeth that have dissolved, there is also another tooth that needs pulling as well. So.....what is an alternative to Metacam??

The vet and I were having a pretty good discussion about Leo's dental, flea bites, and FD that i was there for almost an hour and a half....Leo proceeded to pee a HUGE pee on the floor!!! How embarrassing!! Dr. Andrea said she's never seen a cat pee that amount before and compared it to a big dog pee amount. The vet just laughed, actually we both laughed and laughed. He was pretty good at the vet's, he took a couple of swipes at the vet, but he always does that. I questioned and questioned her about everything......she asked if i was a doctor, i said NOPE, she said well then you must be a nurse....and i said a "well i'm a pretty good cat nurse!" I told her i learned everything i know from the FDMB!!!!

Awwww Melissa, i saw what you had written earlier and i just wanted to say I'm here for ya!!! Love you guys!! I'm back to work tomorrow but will for sure check in on you and T everyday this week.

Um.... Why can't the vet just give Leo a shot of bupe post-dental?

She may sing the glories of Metacam but would she give a drug with a black box warning to her kid? (And I'd also ask if her malpractice is paid up 'cause if she gives a drug with a black box warning and something happens, you have a whopping law suit and she loses her license.)

So there's really no need for an anti inflammatory after a dental then? Ok sounds good to me, I'll refuse the metacam and ask for a dose of bupe before we leave.

Thanks Sienne I was hoping you'd answer my question.

I would absolutely, completely, utterly refuse the metacam. Back when Trixie had her dental in April, I was ready to scream "No Metacam". When I brought it up, my vet was appalled at the thought of even considering metacam for a cat. Trix ended up having 7 extractions and bupe for 3 days, and was perfectly fine and happy.

Aside from that, it sounds like a good visit with a decent vet!

I'm with you on the Metcam. Bad stuff. Our old vet stopped giving it to cats when the warning came out. Gus is an old guy and he had 2 teeth pulled back in May of this year. He did fine on the Bupe. Just tossing in my 2 cents. Hope Leo's sore clears soon.

Glad all went well but I'm with Sienne....why does she think Leo needs both? Metacam is an anti-inflammatory.....it isn't a pain med. Glad you stood up to her.

Bummer on the fleas!!! And I'm sorry you gotta go back to work!! Your boy will miss yoU!

Great news on the ear issue! Hopefully that will clear it up fast.

Leo gets to christen the X-ray machine. Yay! We have never used metacam. However, I have heard so many horror stories from it that I told the vet absolutely no on metacam yesterday. They have T on bupe. Way to stand your ground! Unbelievable that they have missed his poor toothies twice.

 The pee story made me laugh. T did the same thing tonight and he was full to the rim. They had been trying to get a sample in the lb, but put newspaper in there and he won't go on paper. I yelled at them to bring a syringe and the vet tech syringes a vials worth up. Way to go Leo!! When a guys gotta go...

Have a great night!!

I heard you peed on the floor at the vetty too. Mannie told me about it cuz he did it Tuesday. We gots to keep em guessing huh Leo. Have you caught any mousies lately? When I gets better can I come with you? - T

glad you've had a good vet visit and now have some answers! Good for you for standing up for your guy.

scritches to leo! maybe a little mouse snackie would cheer him up after the embarrassing pee-on-the-floor incident! :-D

Thank you ladies! :YMHUG: What would I do without all you gals? I'm sure I wouldn't have thought twice about giving Leo metacam if I wasn't on FDMB. Scary thought.

I dropped Leo off at his grandparents for the week, they sure were happy to see him, more happy to see him than me  he had his shot and supper and was out mousing when I left, I hugged and kissed him so much he started growling at me 'ugh mom, you're embarrassing me!!!!' is probably what he said in cat language.
Tarragon, our course I would love to take you mousing when you're all better and my fleas are gone

Glad the vet visit went well! Moonie usually pees on one vet tech or other!
Metacam has been on the NO list here for a long time! Moonie did get some once at her very first dental, but Never again--She had 5 extractions, and I didnt know any better! She had Bupe ever since & Ab's and was fine--she has had 2 dentals & 9 total extractions!
BTW No Covenia either!! also really bad! It's a 2 week AB! Can cause renal damage!

Glad Leo will be feeling better real soon! He is quite a boy

Hi guys - sorry to be so late in visiting... these DGS days are so time consuming!

I am glad that the vet visit is a good one. Sorry for the dental, but it sounds like Leo needs one. Mannie is in the same boat. a dental for him too... Must be dentak month for our FD kitties. And I will laugh at the pee on the floor ting. Mannie did the exact same thing... they so wanted a sample and he would not fork it over. so.... as we are talking in the exam room he pees on the floor - a nice big puddle. VOILA say the cat - there is your pee sample.

another vote here for NO metacam! no way... that drug cost me the life of one of my kitties. There is a reason it is now Black boxed. go with the bupe. It will take care of any pain that Leo may have. And good luck whenever he goes in for toothie day.

I hope your day was a good one!

LEO!!! BIG party at Attie's this weekend! You in? ~ Mannie
