He ate a full high-carb meal last night after getting 151 mg/dl, I ended up going ahead with a fat 2 units and now this morning he's at 86 o_O and he would only eat half of his dry so I syringe fed the rest wet. (Recent DKA, still on and off with eating) My plan was 0.5 units. I have no idea how I'm going to communicate all that's been going on to my vet, he has a curve scheduled for Thursday and I feel like she's going to ask "what the heck have you been doing??" lol.

Vet finally called back and told me to give him the full 3. Won't be doing that today since I obviously already shot, I'll see how he looks at +6 on the 0.5.

Y'all, am I going crazy? The vet is making me feel like I should just put the glucometer down and dose him based on "whether or not he eats". His vet curve is on Thursday and I'll have to give him the full 3 units regardless of how he's looking that morning.

Sadly, that’s how most vets treat feline diabetes. That’s why most of us don’t consult with them when it comes to that. Of course, you’re in a different situation because of the recent DKA. Why are you doing a curve at the vet? Numbers will be higher because of the stress anyway. Most of us also just do the curves at home and send them the results.

Honest question, would you cancel his curve on Thursday and start looking for another vet? I'd probably look for a vet to take him in for a curve this coming Monday. That's what I'm leaning towards. The only reason he's established at this vet in the first place is because they were the only clinic open on the Saturday that he was in DKA crisis. This vet is a large and small animal clinic and I do not feel like they trust me to make informed decisions at all. They will not even listen to me when I share his numbers and trends over the phone. I DO want to have periodic vet curves, but I really don't feel right shooting 3 units on Thursday and then sending him away.

I understand all of that having been through 4 vets myself till I finally found one I like, but why do you want to have the curves done at the vet and not at home? Honestly, the stress levels will raise his bg and the numbers won’t be as accurate as they ones you get at home. We pretty much all do them at home once we’ve been home testing. I was actually asked by my vet if I didn’t want to do the curve at home and that’s what got me started with home testing. She said it would be a lot less stressful for Minnie and she was right. Plus they won’t do a 12 hour period like you can do at home

There’s nothing a vet curve will tell you that then one you do at home won’t. But yes, if you’re not happy with this vet I’d definitely cancel it and loom for another.

The only reason I scheduled one is because they insisted on it. I think I will call and cancel. I completely agree that he'd be better off with home testing. I guess my concern lies with the recent DKA. But he has been looking a lot better with each day. I feel like I could get him into remission a lot quicker and more safely with home testing. I just hope I have some luck finding a vet that's as trustworthy and collaborative as yours

Don’t be discouraged. Like I said, it was my fourth!
