I will have those tests done. As for her knowledge of Acro, I'm not sure of the amount of knowledge she has, I do know she knew what I meant when i said Acro since I cannot pronounce that word to save my life!

She will be calling with the blood results, when she does I'll tell her i want the Acro test done and sent to Michigan State. i'll try and get that procedure printed out today so I have it handy when she calls. Now, what is IAA and how do you test for that? Is that a special test that also needs to be sent in or is it something that might be part of the comprehensive blood panel she did yesterday?

You know what, I think I'll just take Tigger with me to Mayo, the more I hear about Acro and Cushings and thyroid the more I think he has an Endocrin issue like daddy does.
Although, I wish I could throw down the calories like he does and loose weight!

Re: 8/9 Tigger AMPS 350

Good morning ~O)

IAA stands for Insulin Auto Antibodies. It's a condition where the cats immune system produces antibodies to (exogenous) insulin. It's idiopathic (no apparent reason why) but the good new is it's self limiting (it's eventually comes to an end).

The test is a blood test, also done at MSU on a certain day of the week. I used to have the info bookmarked, but lost it in a hard drive crash. I'll see if I can dig it up, actually now that I'm thinking about it I may have a print out in BKs file here some where...

Anyway, it too is a condition that is managed (while it's active) with high doses of insulin (check out Black Kittys ss around 10/2008). IF your going to have blood drawn and sent to MSU for Acro, you may as well get the IAA done too. I did all the tests 1 at a time - Acro (negative), Cushings (negative), IAA - bingo.

Re: 8/9 Tigger AMPS 350

Ok, went to that site and printed out the Tests for IAA and Acro.
I'll give them to the vet and have them send those two tests in.

Re: 8/9 Tigger AMPS 350

Brent,
I posted on your yesterday's condo - ask your vet if any of Tigger's b/w shows lipemia or not and if yes, see if you can fast Tigger the nite before the blood draw as lipemia has the ability to skew one of the tests, I can't remember which one though.

Re: 8/9 Tigger AMPS 350

I just called the Vet office and told them I would like two more tests ran and faxed over the IAA and Insulin Like Growth Factor-1 tests from the Michigan State website.

I'll let her look them over and we'll discuss when she calls me with yesterdays blood results.

Wonderful. There have been kitties that tested positive for both (I can't believe I forgot to mention that earlier) so good to get both. That way you know exactly what you are dealng with and how to best proceed.

Re: 8/9 Tigger AMPS 350

The tests themselves are not terribly expensive. It's more cost effective to have the acro (IGF) and IAA tests done at the same time since you only have to pay for shipping once and it's the shipping that bumps the price up.

I'd also suggest following the shipping instructions carefully. You don't want a blood sample sitting on a loading dock until someone gets around to delivering the samples to the lab vs. the package getting delivered directly to the lab.

Re: 8/9 Tigger AMPS 350

i called the michigan lab before we sent punkin's in and they said they've had trouble with the USPS being unreliable, so they recommend fed ex. the tests themselves - i think the acro was about $45 and the iaa was $15 - the blood draw was extra from the vet and the fed ex charge (refrigerated) i think might have been $75. i think the whole thing was a couple hundred, but i don't recall now. the vet just paid everything and billed me. it's kinda like you grit your teeth, turn your head and hand over your credit card. in for a penny, in for a pound, right? if we didn't love our cats we wouldn't be doing this already.

i think you're smart to have it done. tigger's got something going on or he wouldn't be needing this dose. it's good to know what you're dealing with so you can create the right plan to tackle it and he will be healthier for it..

You are right, if he wasn't worth it i wouldn't be doing what i'm doing now. But financially it does hit my wallet pretty good at times.

Finished off the old pen this morning and started a new one tonight. I'm going to stay on 8 units for a bit and i'm curious to see the results with the new pen.
I have had a month full of substitute dosers and i'm guessing the pens been left out once or twice so when I get to the end of a pens life I question its potency.

I had a decent +2 drop of 67 with a can and a half of food during that time and the recent trend is he jumps at +2 due to the food.
I am also back to using Syringes now since i'll be doing all the dosings for a while. The needles are a bit longer on the syringes and i think that makes for less fur shots. I can really tell when i have it in there.

He is now finishing off a frozen puck, i'm hoping he's a bit more satisfied when he's done with that puppy!
