Good Caturday Morning All!
Michael is doing good. His #'s have stayed pretty much the same as pmps 312. I gave 1 u this morning as It is waaay to hard to see 1/4 dosing. I am going to have to go with .5 and 1 even I thought i got the .75 I think it was more 1u. I see double trying to see the difference. I hope this doesn't mess things up for Michael for that's the very best I can do. I will try to test around +6 or +7 or +8. His ears are bothering him and he may not let me.

No, I forgot to clear it. I thought if you use that icon it meant that someone would answer your post. Sorry.
Still learning.

Re: 8/9 Michael AMPS 331

no worries! it's there for if you have a specific question. people who help out look for questions first, and then we try to get around to everyone's posts. When people are new, we try to read what's going on with their cat every day anyway. i just thought you might have a specific question you were wondering.

We're watching out for you! :-D

by the way, i meant to ask you - i think you said Michael had a hypo earlier. Did he have obvious symptoms? Can you tell a little about what happened?

Re: 8/9 Michael AMPS 331 +6 311

This was back in in 5/2014. Michael's old vet told me to give 3u sid. That morning he ate which was the normal amt. he usually eats. (he was on y/d food then). Apparently he hadn't eaten enough and the 3u was too much. He would take a few steps and stop. He just acted very strange. A friend (who I had met on line on this website came over with a meter and tested Michael. His bg was 28 we tried to bring it up but couldn't. We went to er. They got his bg to come up and I took him home. The er Vet said if he goes over 300 give only 1 u. as the 3 u was way too much. Meanwhile do not give him any insulin. This happened on a sat. and I didn't give him insulin until Mon. (He wasn't over 300 until then.) I went back to his old vets and they acted like it wasn't any big deal. I changed vets. At the time of this bad experience I new nothing about "Feline Diabetes"
and didn't know there was such a thing as HYPO. This incident really scared me and I knew I had to keep him safe or I could possibly Kill him. My new vet is much better and she is doing her best to work with me.
That's it in a nutshell.

Re: 8/9 Michael AMPS 331 +6 311

thanks for sharing the story. a cat that has had a hypo with symptoms can be more sensitive to insulin than before the hypo event. we don't call low numbers a hypo unless there are symptoms. 28 is very low, however. i'm glad that Michael survived it. Punkin got down to 32, i believe, but no symptoms and he was easy to bring up.

and that episode with the 3u was on Lantus? Lantus lasts longer in the body, so a hypo with lantus can last a while.

fortunately, that's behind you now and you've learned how to test at home and keep him safe.

i did wonder about the dosing - do you think a magnifying lens, like the large ones that crafters use that could clip onto a cupboard door, would help you with seeing the syringe lines? Is that the issue, or is the effort to focus your eyes?

if you haven't tried stacking 2 pair of reading glasses on at the same time, that may help too.

I have tried everything. Magnifiers I use the largest one now. My eyes have a problem focusing.
Should I stay with the 1u or do .5? I can't do .75 I can't see.

the typical answer would be that you don't change the dose based upon the preshot, but if you don't want to have lower numbers, then it makes sense to reduce like you did.

thanks for clarifying - i thought you were saying it is an issue of focusing rather than magnification.

good choice on the dosing tonight. you're getting the hang of it.

I don't know if using calipers will help you or not. If your eyes have a problem focusing, they might not help you but just in case, here's a post I did on Dosing with Calipers. The other thing I use is a Lightbox. I have a lot of light from above but boy did it make a huge difference when I added the light from below.
