Good Morning LL Members ~O)

Gobbles is his usual nutrasweet self. He tested 60 this morning (+2112  ), one-hour post feeding. His weight this morning was 13.0; he's lost a little weight but then has been on a diet--a week ago he weighed in at 13.2, and two weeks ago, 13.6.

Unfortunately, I found a small lump/nodule on his right hip the other day  I thought I'd give it a day or two, but as of this morning, it is still there. He has a vet appointment tomorrow morning (I don't know what vet will do, short of a visual examination).

The lump/nodule seems to be kind of egg-shaped and convex. The size is approximately 1/2 inch x 3/8 inch. There is one tiny area on his skin (where lump/nodule is) that is slightly pink. The lump/nodule is somewhat hard and I think it hurts when prodded as he trying to swat me when I examined it, and doesn't want that area brushed. ETA: However, when I shaved the area, he didn't flinch...

He had great labwork results last month, with the exception of slightly elevated cholesterol and triglycerides (although lower than his bloodwork in April).

He does go outside (on a harness) and free ranges in the garage when the door is closed. I'm thinking maybe he got bit by something...trying to keep the "C" word out of my mind.

Any thoughts, opinions, experience will surely be appreciated.

I am very worried about him.

Re: 8/9 Gobbles AM 60 - Lump/Nodule Found On Hip :(

Hi Kat - What a great +2112 number!

Try not to worry until there is something to worry about. I always laugh when I say that because I'm the biggest worryer in the world (and paranoid too! ), althought that's good advice. I will certainly pray for Gobbles - that he just got bit by some evil bug and it's nothing serious.

Take care and keep us updated.

Try to have a good day!

Re: 8/9 Gobbles AM 60 - Lump/Nodule Found On Hip :(

Have you noticed Gobs messing with it, like maybe it itches?
Of course you worry, Kat. That what good beans do. ;-)

Re: 8/9 Gobbles AM 60 - Lump/Nodule Found On Hip :(

Kat, I second Dara & Carl - TRY to not worry! Think positive! And, please keep us updated! Gobbles, I hope you have just been bitten buy a nasty bug and your lump just goes right away!

Re: 8/9 Gobbles AM 60 - Lump/Nodule Found On Hip :(

Paws crossed that it is just a bit, it sounds like it might be, pink and sensitive. Good idea on the vet though.

Re: 8/9 Gobbles AM 60 - Lump/Nodule Found On Hip :(

Kat, I know you must be worried - stay as positive as you can be and I am hoping its just a bite and will go away within the next few days. I am sending you and Gobbles tons and tons of prayers. Please keep us updated. hugs

Re: 8/9 Gobbles AM 60 - Lump/Nodule Found On Hip :(

I know how hard it is to not worry about our furbabies. Sending tons and tons of prayers that this is just a bite that needs some time to heal up and nothing more!

Re: 8/9 Gobbles AM 60 - Lump/Nodule Found On Hip :(

I agree, it is impossible not to worry! Sending vines that it is a big nothing, and starting to go away by the time you get to the vet!

Re: 8/9 Gobbles AM 60 - Lump/Nodule Found On Hip :(

It's probably nothing. Well it's something but nothing to be fretting about. Sydney had a little lump on her cheek and it was hard too and when touched I could move it. The vet said it was a cyst - sebaceous cyst and it really is nothing. It didn't hurt her, but she didn't like me touching at it. Your stating it's slightly pink has me thinking this. In a sense it's like a pimple and nothing serious.

The vet may leave it be or "pop" it clean.

This can happen to people too. here is a link to read more - http://www.pethealthnetwork.com/pet-hea ... ts-or-dogs

Here's hoping this is all it is.

Re: 8/9 Gobbles AM 60 - Lump/Nodule Found On Hip :(

The vet will feel it and if not a cyst, will aspirate and pop the contents under a microscope to see what they are dealing with ie rumors or abscess . That's what they did with Tiggys first lump (cancer) and second lump (fatty cyst). Neither of his hurt but I think an abscess might.

For the first lump he said it wasn't a cyst and could be a benign or malignant tumor. We had to remove it (2 days later) to be sure. It was cancer but they got it all cos we caught it early like you. That was November last year and no recurrences so far touch wood.

Does it move when you touch it?

I noticed yesterday and today where he was licking where it is on his hip... You're right--good beans would be the ones that worry...thanks Carl!

Re: 8/9 Gobbles AM 60 - Lump/Nodule Found On Hip :(

Its small (which means you probably caught it early), so unless the vet aspirates something blatantly benign (like pus or sebaceous secretions), excision with good margins may be prudent.

The Merck Pet Owners info on skin tumors

Here is a tip for monitoring the size and shape

Hi Kat,
I just logged on and saw this about Gobbles. I hope it isn't anything serious, and glad you caught it early. Sending up vines and prayers for Gobbles and you. I'll be watching for updates.
Thank you for your message of condolence to me on the loss of Maggie. It meant a lot to me.

Here are pictures (I shaved the area first)

It looks a lot like the mast cell tumors my Tux gets. She's had 3 - 2 on the left lower eyelid and 1 at the base of her tail. All were surgically removed, and sent to pathology, which is the only way to tell what the tumor actually is. With clear margins around the growth, excision is curative for cutaneous mast cell tumors.

kat, it's probably nothing, but getting the lump checked out is a good idea.
try not to worry, ok?
sending positive thoughts...

If the vet doesn't suggest it, I am going to request excision with clear margins around the growth. Any idea how much downtime? And I will definitely request pain medicine--bupe?

Unless another preocedure were done at the same time, I'd guess around an hour for the surgery, from anesthesia induction, site prep, excision, closure, and recovery time.

He'll need to fast overnight.

Even if no problems have been seen with the teeth, it might be prudent to clean them while under. And get a dental x-ray if its never been done.

definitely request bupe and it may be stitched so he may need to wear the dreaded cone of shame for a few days so he doesn't mess with it.

My thought is that even if Gobbles' vet doesn't recommend surgery (and maybe just a needle biopsy), I should tell him I would like it removed ASAP, and surrounding tissue, along with teeth cleaning and xray. I' sure that antibiotics and pain medicine will be prescribed (I will ask for bupe if he doesn't prescribe it). This is not in our budget, but I will find a way. I assume I'm probably looking at several hundred dollars....

Awe man, Kat...I'm sorry you had to find a lump...and now freak yourself out. Like many members said, it's most likely absolutely nothing. And a bug bite could certainly look just like that. I actually had a cat pass 2 years ago from a Mast Cell tumor that was misdiagnosed, and at no point did it look like that. BUT...if god forbid this IS something, you are finding it so early, there shouldn't be any problem.

Are you putting the cart before the horse? Well, perhaps...but it's a reflex to do your best to be prepared. Which is something I wasn't a few years ago. You'll know what you're dealing with either tomorrow, or early next week, so please try not to drive yourself nuts. I know it's hard.

Gobbles just kicked FD's butt, so I'm sure it's nothing. He probably just lost a fight with a territoral spider in your garage...or has an infected hair follicle.

Onyx and I are sending you BIG HUGS from Pennsyltucky! And she sends you a special Thank You purr for talking us into getting the Young Again samples.

Definitely keep us posted, hon.

:YMHUG:

You could watch and wait to see how fast it is growing.
Fast growth, I'd go for surgery.
Slow, I might budget to get it removed.

Poor Gobbles. That is scary to find. You caught whatever it is early at least.

Good wishes that this is minor and benign.

Many hugs!

((((Kat))))

I agree it is prudent to get it checked. It could be just a sebaceous cyst. Cats can get them as they get older. I remember a kitty we had in LL and the CG lived in Tucson. I gave her rides to the vet and she had three or four little cysts that looked similar and they were all sebaceous cysts.

Paws crossed...try not to worry.

Kat, I know it's impossible not to worry, but try not to jump to the worst case scenario and hope for the best. Catching it early is good and getting in to the vet right away is good. Sending prayers for you and Gobbles.

Thanks so much everyone for your concern and helpful links; its nice to know there are so many compassionate and caring people here :-D . I am trying to keep positive. I will post tomorrow when I get home from the vet....

Other than the lump, he seems absolutely fine. I did notice though that he has become a bit more clingy in the past few weeks and has even taken to sleeping every night in our bed (he used to sleep there occasionally, but not every night)... He walked all over the yard today, so it must not bother him when he walks. Time will tell.... confused_cat

There is another possibility .... that starts out looking like a cyst.
I just recently read somewhere about foxtail grass ... apparently it can cause all kinds of havoc for pets. It's little burrs can break off, burrow under skin, and if left untreated get really bad. And it grows most everywhere.

You can google foxtail grass + pets .... and find many articles about all the troubles it causes.
Since Gobbles gets to go out now, I thought I'd mention it....

I hope it's nothing to be worried about.
J.D. has a small fatty cyst on his side and the vet aspirated it and said it was nothing to be concerned about. I hope Gobbles just has an insect bite or something easy that will go away on it's own. I am glad that you will have it checked out, though.
