8/8 Gobnait OTJ/In Remission? Thanks everyone in FDMB!

It's nearly a week since Gobnait's low blood sugar scare and a full week since the day I realized I'd been recording higher numbers than I should have been. Frankly, if it weren't for her condition when I brought her to the vet, I'd question whether she was ever sick at all!

I've been spot testing her and she's always in the 70s and 80s. Her coat is back to its soft, shiny MODERATELY sheddey state (not the dry brittle fistsfull of dandruffey hair that were flying off of her at all times for a while there).

I'm SO glad i found this forum or maybe I'd still just be giving her insulin? Not have taken her off dry? Who knows. It only did last a month and it seems as though the food really turned it around for her.

So I'll keep spot testing, keep her on just wet food (she's liking the Newman's own right now) and the zobaline for the neuropathy and will cross fingers that that does it!

Not quite yet. We give a cat 2 weeks before an OTJ party. That way, you are sure that everything is as it should be.

Here are the instructions:
  • Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas).
  • If he is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If he is blue, feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. If his number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then his pancreas is working!
  • Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens, we just give him the support he needs. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

usually we try to wean kitties off of insulin to provide them with a strong start to an OTJ trial, but gobnait may have other ideas. please continue testing and posting. if we see an upwards trend in numbers, we'll suggest resuming a small dose of insulin in order to get her back on track quickly. hopefully, none will be needed.

re small meals. This cat is HUNGRY. she is also so much more active than she has been. She just seems to be feeling so much better. her legs are almost normal even. It's sort of too good to be true. So I will definitely keep an eye on her.

I'm trying to keep meals small and frequent but am not home during the day. I do have the cat feeder but evidently food not from a brand new freshly opened can is inedible to these cats so.....

I'm also gone Wednesday through Friday this week. I have my regular cat sitter there and am glad she won't be shooting. But I also won't be testing at all.

This morning was 86 but i can't access the google docs here in my office on my work PC. I'll have another look this evening and again in the am before I leave.

the truly pathetic thing is i tried to sound out the gobadaldldindngngngngng! :lol:

yes, we're cheering for the little monkey.

small meals doesn't mean starving her - just break it up during the day instead of 2 big meals.
