Yesterday, yet more blue with a hint of yellow. She didn't even listen to Auntie Tricia's hint for a PJ party, so today Neko got a bit of an increase.

Today marks two years to the day that Neko had her first SRT (stereostatic radiation therapy) treatment in Fort Collins at Colorado State University. At the time, Neko was partial to red preshots (although this day two years ago she started at 299) and her dose was 8.5U. This day two years ago we were full of hope for Neko. SRT is the best treatment for acromegaly cats. I had hoped she'd go OTJ, not sure she ever will, but at least the dose is way smaller and her BG average is much better. And overall she's a much happier cat. cat_pet_icon

The two year anniversary is a special one. At the time we did SRT, the vets at CSU said that the average life span of cats they'd been treating there was 2 years, so Neko has made it to there. But the SRT program was newish then, we were about cat #33 they'd done, and most of the cats are older often with other issues so an average lifespan number didn't really mean that much. But it was still a number.

Neko is doing her usual sunny day routine. Shot and purrs with the acupressure in her little bed in the solarium. She's holding out on pee this morning, but she came back in after dinner last night with dirty front paws. At least I hope that's where it is. :?

Even if Neko didn't go OTJ, she is doing fabulously after the SRT. Congratulations on beating the odds.

Neko is a special cat and you are a special care giver. She is doing so well after the SRT treatment.

This is awesome news! It's hard not to get all wrapped up in the numbers-in fact, it's the thing I hate the most about this Sugar Dance thing! ohmygod_smile Neko is indeed a very special kitty and she has a very special bean as well! Are you still giving progress reports to the folks at CSU?

I know I have not known you that long, however I know what an awesome bean you are! And you are so awesome with other newbies....

Congratulations on 2 years and counting!!

I sometimes think those "estimates" they give on life span are just pulled out of the air somehow. My DD was told he had 6 years after his first heart attack...as that date got closer, he became more and more irritable and moody...it wasn't until later that we found out he'd expected to die that year just because that's what the doctor had said.

He ended up living another 24 years

What a fabulous milestone. You and Neko are very special. I think the docs are always doom and gloom with the unknown. They aren't gods so how can they possibly make such predictions. There is no reason not to expect a normal lifespan. I bet they didn't expect her to be so such a small amount of insulin and have such good BG numbers either. Do they keep in touch with you? If not how do they know the success stories? I'll get off my soap box now. It just makes me so angry to hear those predictions. Celebrate!! :RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT

WOW....I can't believe it has already been 2 years. I remember when you guys went! Congratulations - I hope you're having a big celebration this evening!!!

Gosh has it really been two years? I so remember the journey to Colorado. What an adventure. I agree with Ann: congrats on beating the odds. Neko is doing wonderfully!

@Ann, Liz, Catherine, Ruth, Molly, Carla, Chris, Ella, Elise, Amy, Deanna, Rhiannon, Michelle - Thanks all for visiting and celebrating Neko's SRT adventure anniversary. Like it is now, I remember it was hot out. The travel was something to remember - Neko was a way better traveler than we thought she would be. It was 9 hours or so on the road for 3 days each way. It's also the last time DH and I have taken a vacation together. Lots of fond memories, including Mannie putting up a roadside stand with beer for the weary travelers as we went by his exit on the highway on our way home. :cool:

Neko going to a low dose was definitely one of the possible outcomes of SRT. Her two SRT buddies (Grayson and Leo) who went three weeks before her are also down below 10 units of insulin per dose now. Grayson got up over 50 and he was also IAA/acro - that might have been in Neko's future if we hadn't had SRT when we did. But who knows, these acro cats are all so different. The folks at CSU do want to stay in touch with us - SRT is new enough it's still considered research (which makes the cost cheaper at CSU than elsewhere). The staff at CSU were and continue to be great. I've emailed Neko's b/w results and updates to them and they've been more than willing to answer questions. The two year number was just that - a number and not enough data behind it to be accurate. But likes all things FD - numbers stick in ones head. :lol: I continue to worry about the ongoing damage of the pituitary tumor, but at least the growth hormone output is reduced.

Happy Annifursery. It's amazing how far Neko has come, and pretty special, too. She's defied the odds, and here's hoping she will set a record for the longest lived cat that had SRT.

Much better, but interesting as she hasn't hit onset yet. Times like this I wonder if Ms. P is reporting for duty.

@Tricia, Julie - Neko hasn't really defied odds, she's just average. I'd heard cats can live up to 4 years with acromegaly and the majority of people do not do SRT (too much time, travel, or $$ for most). Given Neko's sudden interest in bread products about three years ago, I figure she's had the acro tumor at least that long. What's more exciting for me was her last bloodwork having all values (except glucose by 1 point :roll: ) being in normal range.
