Oh my Bast!!!

I stumbled upon a vet who LOVES to work with feline diabetes and knows what he's talking about!!!
I took GG today because she's peeing on the carpet, figure she's fighting a bladder infection...HE figures its probably stress and would rather give it a couple more days before putting her on antibiotics cuz they tend to mess with the bg levels. and he thinks her's are great! I showed him my little pocket sized spreadsheet...he was totally impressed that I test her BG's at home...and would like to do a fructosimin (sp?) check in a week! I think I just may love this man! I am so stoked that I found someone who I am on the same page with! awesome! :)

of course, I told him about you and this site and how wonderful it is...perhaps he'll turn on some of his other patients to this site! :)

thank you all.

Peace,
Amber and GG

Just to pass along a thought...

My vet never asks for a fructosamine. Given that I get a good number of spot checks, spending money on a fructosamine test is unnecessary. All a fructosamine test tells you is the average BG level over a 2 - 3 week period. If you are getting pre-shot and mid cycle checks, the test will not give you any more information than you already have.

Hi Amber...I brought Raja in for the same reason this past Monday. They did a urinalysis right away.
Lab results showed trace blood so she was started on Clavamox for 14 days. They also gave me a little tiny 10mg pill to give her once a day ...Amitripyline for stress. Did your vet do no tests on her at all?

What are you supposed to do now? Is there anything that he told you to do for her?
Have you used something on that spot in the rug to get the smell out? They make good products to use and when in doubt, use vinegar. Sometimes, inappropriate urination is behavioral, but many times it is because of an infection.

That was good that you brought her in right away but I am wondering what you are going to do now?
It is good that your vet seems to like working with FD. Maybe some others will add their thoughts, but the frustosamne test isn't really a necessary expense when you are doing her BGs daily....I think it's a waste of money really. That's what I have heard anyway....see what others say.

Thanks Raja and Sienne

RE: the urination...yes, he did attempt to do an urinalysis...however, her bladder was completely empty. I did clean up the spot (she pee'd there twice already!) with Nature's Miracle...he thinks its stress related and would like me to wait a couple more days, see if she adjusts, etc. but if no change, then I can bring her back...3-5 days he said. I respect his not wanting to through her on antibiotics right away and that he's avail in the next few days if its not behavioral.
As far as the fructosamine check, I'll see what others have to say, and I will inquire about the necessity of it with him before the appointment. Actually, when he said it's an average over a couple weeks, I was thinking that my monitor will give me the same thing! Then again, I don't know much about it, but for now I feel its a good idea. I am open to suggestion though, so I am willing to hear what others say...majority will rule. :)

Just wanted to say that I told my vet about this wonderful place, and 2 weeks later she told me she had passed it on to 2 other sugar baby families! So glad to be helping others find the wonderful people and advice here.

I agree with Sienne about the fructo testing....it gives an idea of an average value over a wide time period (around 2 weeks) and is commonly used to help diagnose diabetes.

You have more than a few days and weeks of data.
I will tell you my bad vet at the time wanted me to come in every week for one of those, before I found the board, I had no idea if I was home testing that I didn't really need it.

Some reading material:

If you check the health forum, type in fructosamine in the search option, you'll find a lot of threads from past members asking about this.

Just adding my 2 cents about the fructosamine test I am a vet tech who works for a vet who does believe in this test BUT thinks its a waste of money if you are spot checking we actually just talked about it on friday and he said with all the checking I do it would show me nothing new. It shows a average of 2-3 weeks at least with antech labs.

I actually did do a fructosamine when I changed vets. I did it because it made the vet feel better (it was like translating the numbers into a language she could understand more easily). It helped her trust me, so it was worth the money in that respect even though the number didn't tell me anything I didn't know (Lucy was unregulated at the time, duh, that was easy to see in her numbers). Just giving a different point of view.

I do agree with Libby in that it's a good way to establish a solid baseline with a new vet.

I also think if you don't want to do a fructosamine test in the future, you will need to get more spot checks.

My Vet keeps wanting a fructosamine test from us as well, but she also really doesn't agree with hometesting or that Vetsulin isn't a great insulin so ohmygod_smile It has taken me awhile to get my Vet to trust that my information isn't coming from a bunch of people who have no idea what they're talking about. I kept saying 'they' at our last appointment and she raised her eyebrow when I said it was a feline diabetes message board. LOL

Glad you have found someone who seems to know what they're talking about! For the record- Kazi had to go on antibiotics for an infection and her numbers remained stable the entire time.
