Good Friday, Everyone,

Finally we have some cooler weather (in the 60s this morning and expected to go into the 30s or low 40s tonight). I hope it will help diminish Stu's bounces!! I shot a regular 1 unit this morning (decided not to do a skinny because he seems to be so erratic on that dose; may go up to a "fat" 1 unit this evening, depending on what he does today. I really would like to flatten these radical curves, and would appreciate advice on whether that is the way to do it without Stu diving back into the 30s).
Stu cleaned up all the food in his automat last night, and breakfast installments 1 and 2 have been polished off. Litterbox has its contributions (way too much pee and that's worrisome; will try to get a ketone test today). We've been outside for a good tour of the back garden (and a forbidden breech of the fence into the neighboring yard that necessitated a "capture and return").

DH and I would like to do a paddle this afternoon if we can get Stu on the right track. The village "block party" (actually a street fair) was incredibly noisy: teenagers' paradise as far as the "music" was concerned, and kiddie paradise with rides up the side of the town hall in the bucket of the fire engine with the siren going full blast. I didn't stay long and DH knew better and didn't go!
Back later. Everyone have a good prelude to the WEEKEND!

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +1.5 358

Tray is keeping Stu company this morning in the pink zone. Grrrrr!
But its much cooler here too, enjoy your paddle!

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +1.5 358

yeah mocha is right up in the pink zone too ... it's also cooler here today as well which is something we love in this house. We are not hot weather loving kind of people. In fact we hate it and can't wait for fall to get here .... I hope you guys have a great day!

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +1.5 358

Checks is keeping Stu company also.
Oh my, Stu went for an adventure, did he? Naughty boy
Paddling in cool water, sounds wonderful, I hope you and DH get to go.
Our local county fair is in a couple of weeks. It's my once a year fried dough treat. Ahh, greasy, junk, fair food. It's my only reason for going, and the used book sale at the fire hall across the street.
Sometimes I get to snatch hollyhock seeds from the plants that are done flowering, on the fairgrounds.
Have a funfilled day, Ella.

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +1.5 358

Hey Ella! Fun on the village block party! Now the music well - my son is an aspiring musician - guitar guy, plays for the moment with a thrash metal band. Of course I go to the shows - omg - loud, but he does play well. I can hear what was being played there. "music". still sounds like fun.

Well now Mr. Stu - you are spending way too much time in the pink zone, and on the upper floors. Not too sure what to tell you on the dose - but it seems that maybe this skinny one just isn't working well for Stu? I think I'd go back to what was successful. Hear ya on the pink bouncy kitty in the morning - Mannie has been that way forever. I read from so many that getting in that +9 snack makes such a difference in controlling the AM number. I rely on DH to get that one given - often he just forgets. huh? guess i need to change my game plan... well good luck with your decision - hopefully the dosing experts will be along soon.

Come on down Stu and meet me - I am blue/yellow this Am - nice for a change, huh! See you later!! ~~ Mannie

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +1.5 358, +3 331, +5 227

Hi again, There's a front coming through and it's incredibly windy, so we're going to forego our paddle (and stay home to watch our cat's bg levels). It looks like he's coming down slowly and finally got to yellow at +5. Pitched a Giganticus hairball in the mid morning.

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +1.5 358, +3 331, +5 227

I wouldn't keep tweeking the dose. If you shot 1.0 in the AM you need to not hop around. Remember, you are basing doses on nadir, not the pre-shot number and any increase can take some time to settle. So basically, I'm advocating that you pick a dose and stick with it for 6 cycles then evaluate.

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +1.5 358, +3 331, +5 227, +7 332!!

Hi Sienne, Gabby looks really good today.
Thanks for the advice about Stu's dose. I am going to stick with a dose, but I'm not sure what dose that should be. Today his "nadir" was at +5 and it was 227. Now, at +7, he's already up to 332. I don't think he's been this high at this point in the cycle since about February. Baring an infection (the excessive peeing bothers me), I think his dose needs to be moved upwards again, maybe even back to 1.25 units. What do you think? Thanks for all the help you give Stu and me.

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +1.5 358, +3 331, +5 227, +7 332!!

Ella-
The exciting lives of a diabetic cat owner, staying home to watch numbers. We all know that feeling. Enjoy the cooler weather, even though it means fall is on the way.

Stu-
It was nice of you to join me in yellow briefly. It sounds like there's a party at Shadow's tonight; I'm awfully excited. My stupid brother puked on my testing towel this morning. Of all the places in the house to puke...he should have gone for the floor right next to my mama bean's bed. Sheesh. Anyway, I hope you aren't sick and you can come down out of these high numbers soon. Maybe another party will make you feel better. See you tonight!

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +1.5 358, +3 331, +5 227, +7 332!, +9 333

Better safe than sorry, so I made a vet appointment for Stu for Monday morning (vet is at his other clinic, about 60 miles from here, this afternoon and it's too late to get there now; and he's out of town tomorrow). Probably all is OK, but the excessive peeing is troubling me, so I went with my gut reaction. We'll have to postpone our trip to NYC a day, but it may be worth it! In the meantime we'll watch Stu's numbers and try to decide what dose we'll give for the next 6 cycles. His number stayed basically the same from +7 to +9: surfing the pinks!
Later,

Ella

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +1.5 358, +3 331, +5 227, +7 332!, +9 333

The vet was in touch with his clinic here and told his receptionist to give us Clavamox so that we could get a head start on Monday. So I have Clavamox and will start it tonight (liquid form; every 12 hours). Does anyone know whether this medication will raise or lower his bg? (sorry to be so stupid, but Stu has never been sick with the exception of FD and I don't know anything about medications. All I know is that we should stay away from Metacam!).

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +1.5 358, +3 331, +5 227, +7 332!, +9 333

Hi Ella - don't know on Clavamox, but have heard alot of references here from others that have given it. Hopefully someone in the know will post an entry. (And right you are on metacam - I lost one kitty to that crap - sorry - editor's note) I hope all is ok with Stu - but I am with you - better safe than sorry. I am sorry that you have to wait until Monday, but good I think that you got started on the Clavamox early. Healing vines for Stu!, and positive thoughts.

Stu Dude! Wat's up man??? I hear you have to go to the vet... I am sorry buddy. I went today. It was awful: the car, the pokes, the everything! And now I smell funny, and my belly is bare. I think we need a serious party - so meet me! Moonie's and the Shad-O's. and fear not! I am PINK now too... See you - and don't worry buddy, you will be OK ~~ Mannie

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +5 227, +7 332,PMPS 369, Clavamox ?

Thanks, Michelle. Does anyone else have comments on Clavamox for possible urinary tract infection? I'm going to give the first dose at 8 P.M. Eastern time (PMPS +1.5).
Will it have effect on bg? If it turns out that there is no infection, will it do any harm? We won't be able to see the vet until Monday morning, but he prescribed Clavamox so we could get a head start in the event there is an infection. Stu's symptoms: vague; but he's peeing excessively, drinking more than normal, hanging out near his water bowl, and his pee smells strong. Also, bg unusually high all day (PINK surf) and very erratic yesterday. Otherwise he's his normal self, with lots of energy and good appetite. Thanks guys!

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +5 227, +7 332,PMPS 369, Clavamox ?

Hi Ella,
I don't think Clavamox affects bgs, but I'm not sure. All I know is that it really upset Blackie's stomach. We had to discontinue it. I don't think everyone has this problem, but it is something to watch out for.
I hope Stu's numbers come down soon.

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +5 227, +7 332,PMPS 369, Clavamox ?

Maybe it would be better to feed about 30 minutes before he get Clavamox if it is hard on tummy better to have something in it But I don`t know so no advice sorry Kath

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +5 227, +7 332,PMPS 369, Clavamox ?

I will have Raja discuss the Clavamox with Stu tonight. She has been on it since Tuesday morning.
I give it to her on a full stomach.....after eating anyway. Infection raises the BGs and I don't believe that the Clavamox will do anything. In the past, Shadow had been on it after dentals. (not this time though) and he ended up getting sick on about the 5th or 6th day. I withheld it for one day and resumed. As with any AB, you have to give it for the full amount of time.

Raja is not happy about any meds...but I noticed that today, she seemed resigned to having to take it and although she tried to back out of my hold on her, she did let me get the dropper in her mouth. She was a very good girl. Of course, I try to be really quiet when I take it out of the fridge and shake it....she hides if I make too much of doing this.
Stealth mode is always best.

I hope that this will help Stu....having something brewing is never a good thing for our babies.... Raja will talk to him tonight....give him hugs from me....Feel better Stu!!!

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +5 227, +7 332,PMPS 369, Clavamox ?

Ella....I came running back here cause I forgot to tell you something....Fortiflora!!!
While on ABs we need to replenish the good friendly bacteria so it's best to use something like Fortiflora a few hours after giving the ABs....you know that, right? I think some people have given plain yogurt with active cultures and some kitties like it...but you can get Fortiflora too...I got it from Amazon. Not sure where else you can get it. There are other brands of probiotics that you could use....maybe someone will have some suggestions to add.
Certainly try to read up on the UTIs ...just so you are armed with some good questions. I know that recommend canned food vs dry so we are golden in that area at least! Raja's lab work showed a trace of blood. She got a penicillin injection at the vet office on Monday and i started the Clavamox on Tues.
She is also on happy pills... Amitriptyline 10mg once a day. FUN! :-| But she is actually being quite good about it. Maybe the happy pills are working. (Wonder if they would help me if I took one?)

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +5 227, +7 332,PMPS 369, Clavamox ?

Hi Ella,
Im really sorry to hear Stu may have an infection. Is this contagious through the board?!?! Seems so many kitties may be experiencing one!

Here is what I have always understood about a/b's (someone can correct me if Im wrong)...
A urinalysis and culture are important to see IF there is an infection, and what type of infection it is. If an infection is present than a sensitivity comes next, to see which a/b is going to fight the infection best.

If you give an a/b before the above tests, once you do get the test you may not get the answers you need. Say you test Stu with a u/a and culture on Monday after giving a few days of clavamox. If he has an infection which can be cleared with clavamox you will likely not see a positive result for an infection. Of course if he has none, it will also be negative. You are then left wondering...is it the a/b working or did he not even have an infection??? Follow me? Of course if he is positive for an infection despite the clavamox, then you should go through the culture and sensitivity to make sure you get the right a/b.

Giving a/b's when not needed is just like a human. You build resistancy. Now is one round of clavamox, if not needed going to cause him to become resistant? I dont know. Probably not. That might be a good question for health and maybe Jess/earl will answer! In my experience there were times I just had to give SOMETHING because I knew there was an infection of some sort, I knew how Latte reacted to specific a/bs, finances prevented all the tests, or it was vital to try something asap rather than waiting a week for results to come back.

Clavamox often wreaks a little (sometimes a lot) of havoc on digestive systems toward the middle to end of the course. I would definately give it with food if you can. The probiotics is a good suggestion.

I hope stu feels better soon. I know all too well how much those infections can cause problems in all aspects of their lives. Glad you have your radar up and working to catch things before they get too bad.

Miss you , btw!!!!

Re: 8/6 Stu AMPS 372, +5 227, +7 332,PMPS 369, Clavamox ?

Hey Carolyn, thanks so much for this info. The package instruction sheet that came with Clavamox specifies that it is for urinary tract infections in cats. It's a long way to Monday, so I guess we'll give the Clavamox over the weekend and take our chances. Stu has a strong constitution and has never taken any medications (that we know of; he was 4 years old when he came to live with us), so I don't think he would become resistant to it in such a short time. In any event, he'll get some Greek yogurt tomorrow. Maybe he'll like it! I definitely think he has something going on and want to get it attended to, even if we have to forego our trip to NYC next week. Such a trip might be hard on Stu, especially since it is 6 hours in the car and it will probably be hot there.

How are you getting along? I think of you often and hope that your wonderful memories of your Latte are sustaining you in your time of mourning. In the months after we lost our Alice both Edward and I experienced a golden glow whenever we encountered something that reminded us of the things she liked to do, where she liked to sleep, and so many other little things. It was a particularly poignant time for us: sadness at her loss, yes, but also happiness that we had the privilege of sharing our lives with her.

Thanks again for your help this evening. Come visit us if you ever get up (over?) this way. (I'm not just saying this: I mean it!)

Miss you, too.

Ella & Stu

Carolyn is correct -- a culture and sensitivity is typically what you want in order to know which antibiotic is appropriate. Clavamox is a form of amoxycillin and is used to treat UTIs resulting from E. coli. However, there are other bacteria that can cause a UTI. From what I could tell regarding the ingredients in the liquid, there's nothing sugary.
