Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - - - Questions about Bupe ????

I just saw your post and that's fine. See how he reacts to judge how much to give him later.

 I already gave him .4 this morning
No sweat Jamie.:-) Just see how he does on that. It sounds like, with Bupe, most people have to experiment to find the right dose.

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - - - Questions about Bupe ????

its in a tiny little bottle. hes really good when i give him the bupe... its the antibiotics he doesnt like

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - - - Questions about Bupe ????

I am so nervous about changing the bandage later!!! I am really hoping Dane will help me with it... its really hard to do it by myself because the past few times Jupe grabbed my arm and starting biting me... hes never like that... before these bandage changes over the last 2 weeks - he had never bitten me before!

The last time I changed it - Dane did help me... he just kept slowing feeding Jupiter tiny pieces of grass..... Jupe LOVES grass so it worked as a great distraction...Jupiter still tried to bite me twice but it was easier to get him to stop with Danes help

Also super nervous because I dont do well with blood or wounds and stuff like that. I have to apply the ointment directly to wound... I feel sick even thinking about it. Last time I changed the bandage.. the other day when I posted pics of the wound... I had to try REALLLLLLYYY hard so I wouldnt get sick on Jupe. I feel sick even thinking about it!

when you guys give bupe... do u squirt it all in quickly at once into the gums or do u do it slowly?

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - - - Questions about Bupe ????

I just squirted it in my guys cheek pouch all at once.

FWIW, bupe is an odd sort of medication. The higher the dose, the longer it lasts vs. providing more pain relief. I would see how Jupe does on the 0.4 dose. If it's too much, you can reduce it further. Also, I'd give Jupe some Miralax (1/8 teas.) in his food. Opiates like bupe can be constipating.

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - procedure update/ questions about Bu

I can tell the Bupe is working! hes happy and purring and rolling all around :-D

I will call vet and mention about giving miralax. he had a colon surgery a little while back and had a lot of problems with constipation... sure dont want that again... thanks for bringing it up. :-D

I am going to call vet after I change his bandage in about 2 hours... that way if I have any questions about that I can ask everything at once

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - procedure update/ questions about Bu

Maybe when you plan to change the bandage give him bupe about 30 minutes or so before - that should give it time to take effect and hopefully keep him chill while you change it.

I'm thinking he bit because the wound was painful. Hopefully it won't be the situation now that it's been treated and is healing.

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - procedure update/ questions about Bu

since i already gave bupe this morning i wont be able to do that... but have to change bandage every other day - so will try that for next time! thank you all for advice and suggestions and sharing your ideas!!!

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - procedure update/ questions about Bu

Jamie, make sure the plunger moves easily in the barrel, before you squirt the bupe in Jupe's mouth, or it can spurt with force, and be wasted.
Ya know, pull back on plunger, and move up and down a bit first.

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - procedure update/ questions about Bu

Wow - just wrote a long reply & it completely got wiped out!

Jamie, you're doing a great job with Jupiter - he's obviously feeling a little better- he's ornery!

Re. the clindamycin, Spankey got that for his neck abscess (2 ml 2x day for 13+ pounds). I've used it alot for feral abscesses & wounds & dental issues & never had a problem with it.

Re. the Bupe - you'ave had so much good input, I'm going to reiterate most of what's already been said, but to try & get it all together for you:

Suggestion /Idea Credits go to everyone posting before me!

- ECID is different, & Jupiter may not always need a full dose each dose time, especially if he's staggering about or constantly drugged out.

-At the same time, you want to stay ahead of Jupiter's pain & not underdose to start & then be running to catch up to the pain.

- Staggering the dose into every 6 hours or so is a great idea

- Scruffing the neck, tilting the head a little & inserting the syringe into the side of the mouth (cheek pouch between teeth & cheek) so the Bupe is hitting the gums, cheek or tongue when shot works well if Jupiter will let you.

-Getting a treat afterwards makes the ordeal much more tolerable - Spankey got very accepting of his pill time if there were treats involved.

- Normally I know the Bupe is working when shortly afterwards (30 min or less?) Spankey is purring & sleepy instead of in pain or growling & not wanting to be bothered

- keep the Bupe in a dark place

- Don't give aged cheese with it (wow, didn't know that one - thanks, Wendy!)

Sorry to hear Jupiter got at his bandage - what a rascal. Kudos to you for taking such excellent care of him. Sending lots of healing & 'keep you bandage on' vines!

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - procedure update/ questions about Bu

Yes, thanks to Wendy about the aged cheese. I did not know that.....and Checks loves cheese.

Forgot Jamie asked...keep bupe at room temp.

@ Barb - I put the leftover Bupe Spankey didn't need in the fridge for future use - is that ok? nailbite_smile (Sorry, Jaime, don't mean to take over your condo - just fine-tuning!)

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - procedure update/ questions about Bu

Suzanne, I do not know the answer to that. I don't have mine around long enough to save.
Vet tech told me to leave at room temp.

You might want to call your vet clinic, or Google it.
Maybe another user, (Marje) will see this and respond.

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - procedure update/ questions about Bu

Hi Jamie, sorry you're having a tough time with Jupe's bandage. Hope you can convince him to leave it alone and hope you start feeling better, too! ((Hugs))

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - procedure update/ questions about Bu

Hi Jaime! I just read through your thread.....congrats on the new vet, who explains to you & Dane everything that's going on with Jupe! :-D Sending quick healing vines to Jupiter.....& get rest vines for you!!!! I-) Have a good night....Cindy & Sabrina cat_pet_icon

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - procedure update/ questions about Bu

Yes, keep bupe at room temperature. you can put in kitchen cabinet or in a brown paper bag. Did the vet give it to you in a dark plastic bag by any chance? If so, you can leave it in that.

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - procedure update/ questions about Bu

The vet put the little bottle in a dark blue pill bottle.

I had some bupe here from RG&Mali .. its in clear vials and is in a sandwich bag... i had no idea it needed to be kept in the dark.. its been sitting on our dining room table. does this mean its bad? is there anyway to check it?

I meant to post an update earlier but guess I forgot.... we changed the bandage. Went okay. Looks like vet said it would. I took a picture and I am going to try to take a pic each time I change bandage so I can review pics to see progress over the weeks. I dont like this kind of tape they gave us... doesnt stick very well... otherwise it went pretty well.. and I didnt get sick on Jupe!!! I used a rubber glove (technically a vinyl glove... looks just like a latex glove) and I put the ointment on directly on the wound... had to look away once or twice...

unfortunately.... this evening isnt going too well.....I have a fever AGAIN...and its thundering out.... so Jupiter is scared and keeps trying to hide...cant put the cone on him because I am afraid of him getting stuck in the couch with the cone on....which means watching him like a hawk every second.... tonight is going to be really rough...

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - update-bandage change- ??? about bup

how about confining him to the bedroom or another room without the couch?

and your other bupe should be fine - I made the mistake of puting mine in fridge and that's a no no too.

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - update-bandage change- ??? about bup

Awww, Jamie......I hope you feel better....sending feel better vines for Jupiter & you! and hugs to DH for being so helpful.............all of you have gone through so much these last few weeks..........prayers being sent also o:-) Cindy & Sabrina

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - update-bandage change- ??? about bup

jupiter just ripped off his bandage!!!! im feeling really frustrated... i dont know what to do... danes not home and its so hard to do this alone because he bites and scratches and kicks

earlier had danes help plus i think the bupe helped... he purred most of the time... bupe is probably wearing off cause hes growling

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - ripped bandage off!!

Jamie, can you wrap Jupiter burrito-style in a bath towel? Lay him on it, and wrap it tightly around his head, front arms, and body. Just leave the paw you need to bandage outside the towel (and an air hole at the other end). Maybe it will be easier to bandage the leg like that.

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - ripped bandage off!!

dang it! The day was going so well!
Jamie, do you have a neighbor you could ask to come help you? Maybe if you can put the cone on sweet Jupe, he won't be able to bite while someone helps hold him.
I wish i could do more than just offer my prayers and vines for you.
hugs hugs hugs and scritches scritches scritches across the computer

ETA... could he have some more bupe and then give him 20 minutes or so for it to kick in before you try to rebandage?

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - ripped bandage off!!

When you do have to do anything, put on your thick winter coat so if he bites/scratches arms, he'll get coat instead....just something I do when I have to do much of anything for Snowshoe. I like the bupe first idea.

BIG HUGE HUG,

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - ripped bandage off!!

How did he rip off his bandage? I think you really need to keep the cone of shame on. He might hate it but he will get used to it. Think of it as punishment for trying to chew the bandage ;)

Heres a picture of Tiggy in his cone. Wasnt happy with it on but he got used to it in a few days.

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter - ripped bandage off!!

I'm so sorry you and Jupiter are having such a tough day. Positive thoughts from Hardey and me coming your way. You are a good mom and Jupiter knows you are trying to help him, and I know he loves you for it. Hugs...

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter AMBG/63

I think he needs to keep the cone on too. Unless you have him in your arms for a few minutes, where you can stop him. When he cries because the cone is on is because he has learned that you will take it off if he does so. I would try to keep it on for two full days as a first goal to see how he does and to see how he gets used to it.

Hugs to you Jamie. I hope you can get him bandaged up.

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter AMBG/63

he gets hyper on the bupe... he got the cone of 2 times last night... we are gonna get better tape.. this new tape doesnt stay on

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter AMBG/63

okay so i think this tape we just got is gonna hold a lot better.

does anyone have any ideas on how i can elevate his food and water?

so with the cone on he can still eat and drink and the cone can fit around the bowl and its elevated so his face can reach....like if i used a cup for the water the cone is wide enough to go around it and tall enough so jupes mouth reaches the water... something like this but for the food?

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter AMBG/63

Jamie, so glad to hear Jupe is doing a little better and that you found a good vet. It means the world when you have a vet that will communicate with you. You are doing such a great job!!

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter AMBG/63

What kind of cone is it? He shouldn't be able to get it off easily if it's the usual plastic-cone-tied-with-string deals.
Here's Donny with his cone. He had to wear it after getting neutered. He kept chewing on his bum.

You can use a plastic margarita glass or footed ice cream/sherbet bowl

and place his food or water bowl on top to raise it, or use it as-is if his face will fit into it. We do that anyway here particularly for older kitties so they don't have to bend down so much.

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter AMBG/63

Hi Jamie, just thinking about elevating his water bowl so that he doesn't knock it over with his cone...how about a rabbit water bottle type contraption? You'd need to "attach it" to something, but there are ways to do that that are only temporary. That way he can get to it without knocking it over. Not sure about his fuds, but I'll keep thinking on that one. Hope he continues to heal and feel better. ((Hugs))

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter AMBG/63

When my Tiggy had his cone I made him wear it all night when I couldn't watch him. I would take it off during the day as long as he was under my watchful eye. If he went near his wound, the collar went back on for an hour or two. He learned quick.

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter AMBG/63

Anything would work for the food dish, an empty box taped shut or some books! I agree too about keeping the cone on. If you are worried about him getting into the couch, take it off the blocks and put what ever you have under there to keep the cats out, pillows, rolled up blankets, boxes, books, whatever.

Also on the bupe, we keep ours in the fridge. I know they say it shouldn't be , but I found these specs:
Storage/Stability/Compatibility - Buprenorphine should be stored at room temperature (15-30° C (59º-86ºF)). Temperatures above 40° C (104ºF) or below freezing should be avoided. Buprenorphine products should be stored away from bright light. Autoclaving may decrease drug potency considerably. The drug is stable between a pH of 3.5-5.

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter AMBG/63

its the plastic cone.... last night was the first time he got this one off... cause it fits really well... but he was so hyper on the bupe... he was pawing at it... rubbing his head on the floor.... rubbing up against objects to try to get it off... i think he used the corner of the coffee table and somehow used that to get it off....

Re: 8/6 & 8/7 Jupiter AMBG/63

Dane said there is diarrhea in LB. Of course the 3 cats use the boxes - so I cant be 100% sure which one it was... although I am pretty sure it is Jupiter since he has some smelly gas today. Maybe AB upsetting his stomach ?

gave him a tiny bit of forti flora today but he wouldnt eat much of it... gonna give him a pearl probiotic a few hours after AB tonight. i assume the AB is causing the upset tummy and gas... and vet said if he started having vomiting/diarrhea/no appy then he would want to take the AB dose back down to what he was on before. (he was on 1ml twice daily - vet raised it to 1.5ml twice daily) I am thinking I might just give 1ml tonight and then call the vet tomorrow to see if I should give 1ml or 1.5ml

Maybe one of the softer cones I showed you might work better there longer and from what I hear they stay on better, they also have this big bubble looking one, look on doctor fosters ans smith .com. You are going to have to ground him put him in bedroom or bathroom tonight. To bad you don't have a play pen to put him in with a blanket over top this way you could sleep and do things without having to stress so much.. Healing vines to you guys try and get some rest.

Just thought I'd pass this along from Shasta's condo a few days ago...help ease your mind a little.

Chris & China said:
Clindamycin is used for (among other things), soft tissue infections, so I'd think it'd be a good choice since it sounds like Shasta's gums are infected too. It can cause diarrhea (as most antibiotics can) so just keep an extra eye on the LB (Oh JOY!! :-D )

Yeah, it's kind of a normal side effect of the AB's since they kill the good bacteria as well as the bad. I know a lot of people use FortiFlora probiotic to help add some of that "good bacteria" back into their gut to help with that.

Pumpkin can also help ....or baby food squash (no pumpkin pie mix or added sugar of course)

Jamie, I don't see a condo for today, so will put this here.
I simply place Checkers food dish on top of an upside down plastic bowl. It raises it enough, so he doesn't have to bend his head down so far, to eat. He has long legs.

Jamie, you posted a 911 condo a few hours ago that Jupiter was overdosed on Prozac. Is he alright? The condo disappeared. You said your DH had given him Prozac and you had told him to give probiotics you had already give Prozac.

Yes I asked Dane to give Jupiter probiotics and he accidently gave prozac instead. Talked to the on call vet and she said she doesnt think the extra dose will hurt him.

We discussed how if Jupiter gorges himself with grass, he usually vomits... so vet said it was a good idea and we tried that and he ate a lot of grass but didnt vomit

She said he may experience a bit more side effects tonight like his appy may decrease. she said just watch out for anything really weird and call back if needed.

Hope Jupe is doing ok and you were able to get that bandage back on. Darn him. My horses kept bandages on better than him :o Izzy cannot take Clydacin or any of it's other various names. Makes her sick...then she goes off food. She usually gets Zenequin.

Hi Jamie,Are you ok? so much stress and you not feeling well just makes things harder. Hope Jupe doing better now and he has kept his bandage on for you. Try and get some rest I no it's hard. healing vines for you guys
