8/4 Maus AMP/175, +2.5/135, PMP/123, +2/99, +3/67, +4/62, +5/59, +6/58

Do you have cerenia on hand? Poor Maus. Do you think it’s pancreatitis again?
She won't pill, have scar from last attempt. She's miserable & I feel so bad that it doesn't seem like much I can do. Honestly, I don't think she's felt fantastic for a very long time. I'll try to get into the vet today

I let her outside to do her stuff as she hadn't done a bm in 3 days. Normal for the meat diet, but she seems to feel better with a regular bm - related to the pancreatitis? The poo was small & hard but she didn't seem to strain. Up side to the Ziwi rabbit & lamb was regular poo & her bp wasn't that bad.

Nice walkies around the garden & on the way back to the house she drank a lot of water then when my back was turned gave me the slip. Checked all the regular hidy holes, but no luck, gave it another hour & had to cancel the vet. Left a message to consider inject-able cerenia; I know it stings, but don't know what my options are at this point, my dear little Maus hasn't felt really good for a very long time.

I hope you were able to get in to the vet and have some answers to what is going on with Maus? :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

re: the constipation, I don't think pancreatitis causes it. But I know constipation can cause a kitty to vomit due to the straining. You might ask your vet about this though.

I can see your difficulty in pilling so I hope your vet can do an injectible cerenia shot instead. I don't suppose Maus would eat the tiny bit of Cerenia wrapped up in a Pill Pocket? Sending feel better vines:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I did not find Maus in time for her appointment, but I went into town anyway & got one dose of inject-able cerenia (and a LOT of beer for my event this weekend). She wouldn't give me more, said it's very expensive & give it a try & see how it works. She keeps dismissing the idea of pancreatitis because she's doing so well with insulin. Wants an ultrasound which means a trip to the city and more than a couple of bucks (to know what & to what end?).

At 4:30, DH sent a pic of her lounging in the shade, not hiding at all. Silly me envisioning her curling up under a bush to cross the rainbow bridge & me never finding her (yes, that happens with barn cats). I got home just in time for PMPS (123) & gave the cerenia after (didn't want to hold off food & insulin since she hadn't eaten all day). She was much, much better in the afternoon, but still complaining when I picked her up. The cerenia was way better than I'd expected. I popped it in the fridge for a bit & we did it just like the insulin.

I don't much like this game.

I think people who feed raw add a little fibre to help BM. @tiffmaxee @Rainbow Conti

Sorry, but I'm losing track of the changes to her food. Is the Ziwi rabbit & lamb no longer available? It was the Mackerel and Lamb that was 16%, right?

I hope she is feeling better tonight :bighug:

@tiffmaxee what do you suggest?

I do add a pinch of psyllium husk powder to his AMPS and pmps meal. That helps keep him regular.

ETA I'm sure you also know with the higher protein meat diet they dont poo as often either. And I do find LM to have smaller poos than he used too on regular food

I don’t agree with your vet about pancreatitis not bring probable because of how well he’s doing on insulin. Max had pancreatitis for a few years before becoing diabetic. One of the people on the pancreatitis board had a cat develop diabetes and she joined the FDMB. That’s how I got here. Her cat went into remission pretty quickly.
You don’t need an ultrasound to diagnose it. Has your vet run the SPECFPLblood test for it? Sure sounds like it to be. Cerenia works better when injected but only lasts 24 hours. What’s the point of just one dose? You are lucky it didn’t bother him. It sting my cats so much I couldn’t give it again .

When eating raw they don’t poop every day and the poop is dry and small. My two go about every 2 or 3 days. You could try adding a teaspoon of pure pumpkin once it twice a day if you think he’s uncomfortable.

The Ziwi Rabbit & Lamb is 12.22% and the Mackerel & Lamb is 4.99% going by their Typical Analysis. Doesn't explain why her bg went up when I tried the M&L, but an oncoming bout of pancreatitis might?

Before July 13, Maus was strictly raw chicken using Pierson recipe her entire life. I always add psyllium to the mix and never had a problem (several cats) until this past fall. Started adding psyllium to her daily, then Miralax when she remained constipated. We thought chicken might be an issue, so I switched to cans July 13. I wanted something she'd never had & thought the R&L was low carb (my mistake for using old data & not doing the math myself). I did not yet have a known steady source of rabbit (I do now & once work is done will switch). Going off chicken seemed to be the trick for 3 weeks, until the night before last when she started again vomiting liquid & loose fur. Don't know if it means anything, but she drinks a lot during the vomiting phases.

I agree with you Elise. Different vet (same clinic) did a SNAP in Dec and again in March:
3/22/2022 L 6 SNAP Assays results from IDEXX VetLab In-clinic
Laboratory Requisition ID: 19493 Posted Final
Test Result Reference Range
fPL = Abnormal

What's the point of one dose? I don't know, I asked for it, despirate for something. She will not pill. It sucks, I know

ps: my DH thinks I'm crazy putting so much of myself into a cat who won't hardly let me touch her & sometimes I think he may be right. So many sweet cats out there in need of love

If it’s working I would ask for more cerenia to inject. You need at least a few days to see if it helps. The problem with the SNAP is if in the gray zone it will be negative but the test sent out gives you a number.

Don't know if it means anything, but she drinks a lot during the vomiting phases.
Drinking a lot of water and vomiting immediately (if that's what she's doing) is a sign of stomach acid. From Tanya's website:

"Vomiting Water
Sometimes CKD cats drink a lot on water in one go, then vomit all or most of it up shortly afterwards. This may be a sign of excess stomach acid. It is possible that the cat has an urge to drink before vomiting so as to dilute the stomach acid.

Vomiting in the Morning
CKD cats often vomit in the morning. This tends to happen because if a cat goes a long time without eating (such as overnight), excess stomach acid has more time to attack the stomach lining and cause vomiting."

More from there. Not sure if it's of any help:
"There is a difference between vomiting and regurgitation. Vomiting is usually accompanied by a lot of abdominal movement, whereas regurgitation happens suddenly and with less warning. Vomiting means the cat is emptying the stomach, whereas regurgitation is where food has not yet reached the stomach but is being ejected from the oesophagus more or less intact, often because of eating too fast or hairballs. Regurgitation is often sausage-shaped. Veterinary Partnerexplains the difference and has videos showing vomiting versus regurgitation.

Cats who vomit immediately after eating may have a gastric motility problem - ranitidine may help with this, but is now extremely hard to find.

Occasionally vomiting is caused by constipation, particularly if your cat vomits before, during or immediately after using the litter tray.

If you are giving your cat sub-Q fluids and s/he regularly vomits after fluids, this may because of the type of fluid used."
