Hi all,

Thinking of Mariko today and sending vines to all those kitties who need them.

Lovey hasn't vomited in the last 24 hours, but she still has the diarrhea. She ate pretty well yesterday. I brought her to the ER vet yesterday since she still had diarrhea. they checked for ketones since I couldn't catch a sample. They were negative. Lovey did not have a temperature. I asked for something for nausea or an upset tummy and they gave her a shot of cerenia. (spelling ?) Unfortunately, she did not want to eat today before shot time. She did eat a few teaspoons of baby food. Thankfully, about an hour and a half later she ate some more baby food and ate a tsp or two of fancy feast. I don't want to give her too much at once.

Do you think I can wait until tomorrow to take her to the vet since my regular vet isn't in until Tuesday? He is a new vet who specializes in small animals. I wonder if I can get some cerenia to use at home? Do you buy that from the vet or get a prescription? I hate to put Lovey through another vet visit but..

Re: 8/4 Lovey PMPS 369 Not eating much and cerenia?

I tried again and she ate more baby food and a tsp or two of fancy feast so I am happy. I don't want to give her anymore right now.

Re: 8/4 Lovey PMPS 369 Ate some more and vet visit?

Sending tummy feel better soon vines to Lovey. I think small meals would be best. Good luck at the vet today.

I'm so sorry to hear Lovey is sick. Here is the Primer on Pancreatitis I wrote and it includes the link to the Round Table discussion to which Elise referred.

Cerenia is excellent for vomiting but, as Elise said, ondansetron is a better anti-nausea med. It is best to get a script and get it at Costco if your vet does not carry it. Many don't. I ordered it online at thrivingpets.com in injectable form with a script from my vet. Much cheaper and if they are vomiting and nauseous, you don't have to worry about them keeping it down.

I've used slippery elm bark powder for diarrhea and it tends to work pretty well as it soothes the intestine. You can get it at a health food store and I'd get the bulk pure powder. You only need a tiny bit....half a cup goes a very, very long way. Here's a microwave recipe to make the syrup:

Take a glass container which holds two cups. Put one cup of water in the cup. Add 1 to 1.5 tsp of slippery elm bark powder.

Heat in the microwave on high for about 1.5 minutes. Remove from the microwave and stir, then put it back in for about another 30 seconds. Keep an eye on it because you do not want it to boil over. Remove from the microwave and stir again.

Allow to cool and give ¼ - ½ (0.25 to 0.5) teaspoon (1/2 tsp = 2.5mls) up to 4 times a day. This will keep at room temperature for a day or in the fridge for up to five days.

Be sure you separate it by at least an hour from any meds but two hours is better. It's fairly tasteless.

Sending a ton of healing vines.

Catherine:

I'm glad to hear Lovey is keeping food down. So sorry she still has the diarrhea. In my experience. Baby food contributes to loose stools, so if you can move her to more FF or whatever cat food she prefers, it might help with the diarrhea. If the baby food is all she'll eat, then by all means continue, because she needs to eat.

If she is eating and drinking water and you would feel more comfortable seeing your regular vet, I think you can wait, but perhaps some of the more experienced people here might have better advice. You want to be sure she doesn't get dehydrated from the diarrhea, so that's why I mentioned drinking. If she isn't drinking much water, you can add some to her FF.

Sending good tummy and poo vines, and good appy vines, too.

Re: 8/4 Lovey PMPS 369 Ate some more and vet visit?

Thanks you so much Marje for the information. I am not sure what is causing the diarrhea. I will look for the slippery elm bark powder. We got a bloodwork up at the ER vet since my vet doesn't have in house labs. My usual vet was off but another vet in the practice recommended some bloodwork right away since she was diabetic. So I had to go back to the ER vet since they have an in house lab for basic blood work. Kidney values were mildly elevated compared to last bloodwork done in March. Other values were good. But I think feeling sick or being dehyrdrated could influence the kidney values. Lovey got fluids too. The Er vet didn't think she was very dehydrated, but she was somewhat dehyrdrated. I just got back. Lovey was at 2 vets today.

I am going to throw out all food and buy new ones just in case I got a bad batch.

Re: 8/4 Lovey PMPS 369 Ate some more and vet visit?

Dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea can elevate kidney values.

Keep in mind that cats can get a GI bug just like people. If the FortiFlora isn't doing the job, you can try a more potent probiotic. I've used ReNew Ultimate and I've found it at Whole Foods in the refrigerator case in the health food section. You use about 1/3 of a capsule x2/day.

Re: 8/4 Lovey PMPS 369 Ate some more and vet visit?

I've also used the Renew Ultimate and it's good stuff.

The other option is to see if the vet will prescribe some metronidazole but, for me, I like to try the holistic stuff first. However, she needs to be eating and not get dehydrated.

Re: 8/4 Lovey PMPS 369 Ate some more and vet visit?

I hope Lovey is feeling better and eating more for you this evening. Hopefully the b/w will give you an idea of what is going on with her.

Re: 8/4 Lovey(AT) PMPS 348 + 3.25 101 ? Help

Lovey did eat almost her regular amount of food very slowy. I gave her the full dose. She dropped down a lot. I think she will eat. What do you think will be better for the diarrhea situation LC with a little Karo or HC. which will upset her stomach less? I am worried that she will drop down too low and won't eat? She got fluid todays maybe that influenced her numbers. This dose before she got diarrhea was good for her not getting her too low.

Should I give the karo now just to prevent any problem? It was a huge drop. I will retest just in case. I gave her the shot in a different spot today due to the fluids.

Re: 8/4 Lovey(AT) PMPS 348 + 3.25 101 ? Help

I think what you give her will depend on how Lovey reacts to HC or karo. Neko gets a bit of diarrhea if she has too much gravy from Fancy Feast. I think she's reacting to the wheat. So far (anti-jinx) she's been reacting better to the Merck Cowboy Cookout - same amount of carbs. Do have any MC around the house? That might do the trick to slow Lovey down.

Re: 8/4 Lovey(AT) PMPS 348 + 3.25 101 +4 127 Help

Thanks Wendy. My just about +4 was 127 so I am feeling better. Maybe she is slowing down? Thank you Wendy for replying. I was worried since getting her to eat these past few days has been a project at times since she got diarrhea and an upset tummy. I was envisioning another trip to the ER. I fed her 1 teaspoon of LC at 3.25.

I do have the MC in the house.

Sorry to hear Lovey's been sick, Catherine! I'm glad to hear that she ate a little better for you tonight though. Hopefully that's a sign of things getting better!

I'm no expert, but I have noticed that when other kitties get fluids, often it does make their BG go lower so I wouldn't be at all surprised if that's why she took the big dive.

Let's hope it doesn't set her up to bounce tomorrow and she continues to improve.

You and I seem to be two birds of a feather today...not much we won't do to get our kitties to eat!

How is Lovey today? I hope she is improving and having no diarrhea. Sometimes once you get it stopped, it might take a couple days to see normal poo.

Thank you for your very, very sweet post on Gracie's condo last night. I'm sorry I didn't respond....I was helping a 911 on Health until I went to bed. You brought tears to my eyes...but happy ones. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Sending Lovey tons more vines today.

How is Lovey doing today? I hope you get to see your regular vet. If you have a Costco near you they sell ondansetron and it is as cheap or cheaper than thrivingpets. They also sell cerenia and it might be cheaper than at your vet's office depending on their markup.

Just a thought, but have you been trying different foods lately? That could account for the diarrhea but you probably already know that. Let us know how she is doing when you can.
