I was going to change Jupiters bandage Thursday night, but then decided to wait until Friday morning. I was afraid of something happening, and then not being able to get him to a vet right away, since vet was closed.

So Friday morning I went to re-bandage his foot... and took the vet wrap off and the gauze was all stuck in his wound. I was afraid to make it bleed, so we had to take him to the vet. I think I made the right decision by waiting until the next morning to change the bandage!

The vet tech took him in the back and re-bandaged his foot. When she brought him back out she said the gauze was really stuck in the wound. She said that his vet looked at it and she said it looked okay though. I told her I thought he might be in pain and I asked if they could give him another injection of bupe. I told her he did well with that last time. She said something like "we dont want to keep giving him controlled substances" and I told her that Jupiter did really bad with the tramadol. She said he should not be in pain though especially now that they changed the bandage. He did act in a bit of pain for the few hours following that but he is no longer acting in any pain.

His appy has improved over the past 2 days as well, still not as much as he should be eating, but a BIG improvement.

So far today, his appy is pretty poor but I am hoping it gets better a little later in the day. I also noticed yesterday/last night that he was looking better and acting like he feels better. The color in his fur has seemed to improve since the surgery - dont know though... just looks like it. The past 2 days he has been burrowing under the pillows, meowing when I cough and sneeze, and just acting more like himself again.

His appointment with the oncologist is August 12th. We are keeping our fingers crossed for good news.

So sorry for not posting a condo past 2 days. Yesterday was a very bad day for me, my kidneys were extremely swollen and I was in a lot of pain. Had a super hard time even sitting up. I did get a bit of sleep last night which was very very nice - but still in pain today - so I apologize for not being around much.

Thank you all for your support, advice, and visits :-D

Hope you all have a wonderful day!

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56

sounds promising jamie. you are doing a great job with Jupe but you have to take care of yourself also
hugs

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56

Thanks for posting Jamie. I think about Jupiter all the time and search for updates. I'm glad you went to the vet to get the bandage changed. I am not glad they are so stingy with giving him buprenex for pain.
I hope you are feeling better after some sleep, and are able to enjoy some of this better weather we are having.

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56

So glad that Jupiter is feeling a little bit better. Sending lots of healing vines and good appy vines.

Take care of yourself and hope you're feeling better too.

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56

Lots of vines to Jupe and prayers and well wishes for you, Jaime. Sooo sorry to hear about the pain you were having...it's so hard to take care of others when we don't feel good ourselves.

Take care of you. I'm glad to hear they fixed up Jupe's foot. Hugs :YMHUG:

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56

Sending prayers for you and Jupiter. I'm glad he seems to be feeling better and eating better. Sending good appy vines.

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56

Hi Jamie

So happy to hear that Jupe is feeling better and acting more normal. I have been waiting to see a condo from you and Jupiter. Sending vines for continued improvement and for you to feel better too!!

Jane

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56

well we wanted to wait until tomorrow to change his bandage because they said at the vet they really wanted this one to stay on another 3-5 days before changing it. Unfortunately, Jupiter had gotten all the tape loose from licking under it, and the bandage was sliding down a bit. I would rather change it then the whole bandage fall off in the middle of the night or something so we changed it.

Well... his foot looks really really bad. I am so incredibly worried. It doesnt look like its healing right. I took some pictures in case... but they are pretty gross looking.

I just... I am so worried

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks really

Oh Jamie, my heart hurts for you. I have nothing to say that can make you feel better. I'm so sorry for Jupiter. cat_pet_icon

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks really

We're sending tons and tons of prayers to you...for both you and Jupiter....

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks really

Hi Jamie. I was glad when I read that Jupiter was slowly getting back to normal but saddened that his wound is looking worse. I hope it begins to heal properly so he can get started on the road to recovery.

I hope you're feeling better as well. We have the three of you in our prayers Jamie.

Have a great evening.

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

Hi everyone,

Jamie just emailed me some pics of Jupe's foot (6 total) so I am going to post them here.

Please take a look? It doesn't look like it's healing very well, so I can certainly understand why Jamie and Dane are really concerned.

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

Jamie,
I don't think it looks infected, but it sure looks painful. You can't smell anything bad can you?
What I don't understand is how exactly it's supposed to heal? Is the skin supposed to grow back, or eventually reconnect? It just seems like a wide area to heal over, and I would think that any time it tries to scab over, it's got to itch really bad. And I would understand his wanting to mess with it.

I've had kitties with abscesses before, ones that needed tubes put in so that they would drain. But I can't remember having a wound that large with any of them.

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

Prayers for Jupiter and You and Dane dealing with this.....

ask your vet if a product like this would help.... I'm curious why she hasn't used it ....
http://kericure.com/products-2/vet-seal/
There seem to be a couple out there ..... I just got the human version for my grandmother ( almost 90) who always has wounds to heal.

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

After his surgery it was stitched close together with much less of a gap. When it split open, she restitched it. I dont feel like she did a good job. She also didnt give him any anesthetics and if I wouldnt have pushed the issue of them giving him a shot of pain meds, they wouldnt have done that either. They bandaged it horribly the last 2 times they bandaged it too. I just dont know what to do. It looks SOOOO much worse then it did right after the surgery

any opinions on this would be really appreciated.

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

Here is a "before" the stitches were removed photo. It seems like they were removed too soon?

edit to add 2nd photo.

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

((((Jamie)))),
Many prayers tonight that the wound will begin to heal. Do you have any other vet options? I would seriously consider changing vets to one that you could have confidence in. Even if you have to go to a different town, it might be worth it. This vet's attitude and actions are questionable at best.
We are thinking of you and of your sweet kitty tonight. Healing vines to you both.

Ella & Rusty

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

It doesn't look infected but it should NOT be open like that.

I would make sure she restitches it with a LOCAL and I'd find out if there is anything she can put on it to help it heal. Colloidal silver? I have no idea. Will you ask her again about the cold laser Jamie or is it off the table for use because of the cancer?

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

We are going to call around to vets tomorrow and try to get him seen tomorrow morning. Possibly and hopefully from a new vet - but if worse comes to worst, we will take him to the vet hes been going to.

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

Prayers for you and Jupiter to find the right vet to fix him up correctly. Sending major healing vines. And no pain vines. (((((Jamie and Dane))))

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

Oh no!
When I started reading your condo, I was so happy Jupiter was feeling better, eating more and acting more like himself.
But now I saw the pictures, the wound looks painful and not healing, and I am worried now too.
I am so sorry, Jamie. You must be feeling so worried.
It's frustrating by just by reading how unhelpful and even unprofessional the people at your vat are.
I wish you can find a better vet tomorrow.
Sending tons of healing vines to both Jupiter and you.
I hope you'll feel better soon too.

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

Sending tons of vines for sweet Jupe! Good luck w/ calling vets tomorrow!

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

I hope you guys can get him in to a different vet tomorrow. A vet that has a clue how to help Jupiter heal better and faster and with pain meds! Sending lots and lots and lots of healing vines and pain free vines and comfort vines for Jupe. ((hugs))

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

Oh Jamie! I'm like everyone else and had hoped for Jupiter to be doing much better! What a tough time you're both having! Sure hope you can get a more understanding vet tomorrow!

From looking at the pictures Carl posted for you, the 6th looks like the stitch running along that bottom edge (in the picture) is definitely not holding anything together anymore. If you look at the other edge, you can kind of see where the stitch looks like it pulled through the skin and now the whole wound is open again

It does look angry, so I'm sure Jupe has to be uncomfortable. If the vet comes at him with a suture kit tomorrow and doesn't give him an anesthetic first, I think I'd scoop him up and run for someplace else!! Unless Jupe sat like a stone statue through the re-stitching the other day, there's just no way they can get the good "bites" they need to with the sutures with a squirmy patient.

Also, lots of vets still believe the old adage that an animal in pain will limit their activity on their own, so pain is a "good" thing....that's old thinking, but as we all know, getting vets to change what they've always done isn't easy to do. Pain control is now supposed to be treated just like you'd treat fever, poor appetite, or high blood pressure!!

Sending lots prayers and healing vines for Jupiter!

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

You're right it looks bad because it is an open wound. Like Carl said, it doesn't necessarily look infected, but I don't see how it's going to heal being wide open like that.

I think it needs to be stitched in order to give it time to heal properly.

Looking for a new vet may be best, as the current one doesn't seem to realize that this really doesn't look right.

My two cents for what it's worth - get it stitched up again, and see if they would bandage it, with medication and then put a hard cast on it, so he can rip it apart. Even if you need to take him in every 3 days for bandage change, better to do that and keep it covered, then what you have been doing the past week.

And if you stick with the same vet, then you need to get more vocal and demanding! Not yell, but put the authority in your voice in and demand, insist and refuse to leave until the vet sees him and fixes this. Again, who is the owner of this vet office? Are you dealing that with person or just one of the employees? If you aren't dealing with the owner, then insist on seeing the owner and show them his foot and how it's not healing.

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

Hi Jaime! Sending tons of healing, pain free vines to you & Jupe..........Good luck with the new vet hunt!!!! o:-) o:-) :YMHUG: Cindy & Sabrina cat_pet_icon

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

I posted this yesterday and it's not there....
I was wondering about asking the vet about woundseal products. I just bought one for my grandmother.
They make them for pets too.
http://kericure.com/products-2/vet-seal/
There are many new products like this out there for veterinary use.
Apparently it is a common problem for some wounds to do this.

Re: 8/4 Jupiter AMBG/56 changed bandage & wound looks bad -

We found a vet that can see him today! They were very reluctant at first and said we needed to go back to the vet who did the surgery. I explained what problems we have been having and I told them I felt like the vet was rushed to put the stitches in last time so didnt do it well. I told them we keep going back to this vet but its only making things worse. So they finally agreed to see him for a "second opinion". I asked that if it needed restitched, is that something they could do there - and they said yes. The appointment is at 1:30. We will be leaving in a little less then 2 hours to go there. (It takes about 40 minutes to get there).

I will post an update later and I will let you all know how it goes.

thank you all so much for your visits and support

Re: 8/4 & 8/5 Jupiter- wound looks bad - PICS - vet appt tod

Great job, Jamie, finding the new vet and convincing him to take a look at Jupiter's leg!!!
I'm very glad he can see you and Jupiter today!
Sending more healing vines.

Re: 8/4 & 8/5 Jupiter- wound looks bad - PICS - vet appt tod

Sending good vet visit vines. I hope this vet is way better, and will help Jupiter to get that leg healed up.

Re: 8/4 & 8/5 Jupiter- wound looks bad - PICS - vet appt tod

Sending the longest healing vines i can send, I wonder if that vet had ever been stitched without anything, I have it hurts like hell,I did a survivalist pack packing adventure,it was an adventure  That is an open wound not good it's should be healed by now. Jamie I'm an so sorry your going through this, hope this new vet sees a different solution to this. Will be thing of you.

Re: 8/4 & 8/5 Jupiter- wound looks bad - PICS - vet appt tod

Hi again Jamie!!! Great news about the new vet, 2nd opinion.........Sending good vetty vines in addition to the vines sent earlier! Cindy & Sabrina cat_pet_icon o:-)

Re: 8/4 & 8/5 Jupiter- wound looks bad - PICS - vet appt tod

Paws crossed for a good second opinion. I hope you like them enough to make them your primary vet. I can't believe that your vet withheld pain meds after major surgery. And that wound looks like the stitches were remove too early, it should not have opened up again like that!

:YMHUG: :YMHUG: cat_pet_icon cat_pet_icon cat_pet_icon You ar such troopers.

Re: 8/4 & 8/5 Jupiter- wound looks bad - PICS - vet appt tod

Great news on the new vet! Sure hope this one is willing to truly listen to your concerns and do a great job with Jupe! I know it's hard to change vets since we all try to have a "good relationship" with one over many years and think they know our animals well due to that "relationship", but in this case, getting new eyes on the problem is a great idea. When we hoomins are facing a tough diagnosis, while we try to trust the doctor we've seen for years, I think the majority of us seek out a 2nd opinion..and sometimes a 3rd.

Will be praying you find this new vet both talented AND compassionate to you both.

Re: 8/4 & 8/5 Jupiter- PICS of wound - vet UPDATE - procedur

Dane and I just got home from taking Jupiter to the vet.

The vet said Jupiter needs to be put under sedation to have some of the granulation tissue removed. He said its not healing properly and wont heal unless its removed. They are going to treat this as an open wound and it will not be stitched back up. If they dont do the surgery today, and it keeps getting worse, the next step is amputation - so of course we wanted him to have the procedure done.

He is going to do the procedure around 5pm today and I will be able to pick him up around 7pm as long as everything goes well.

The vet said it should take about 4-6 weeks to completely heal. He said I will need to change the bandage every other day for the first week, and if its healing well, we will change it twice a week after that. He would like to check the wound once a week until it is healed.

I didnt even have to ask him for pain medicine. He prescribed Jupiter bupe to be taken orally for the next few days. He said its going to be really sore - and he doesnt want Jupiter to be in any pain.

He explained everything very thoroughly. I didnt even have to ask for the explanation!! He told me why the procedure needed to be done and with detail, explained. The vet tech who was helping us was awesome as well!!!! Its amazing - they explain everything so well and when I was concerned about anything they listened! Vet tech even very thoroughly explained the estimate. No complaints at all what so ever today!!!!!

They are going to be giving him a special kind of ointment to be put on the bandage. This will help it so it doesnt grow too much tissue back, and it has a steroid in it too, to keep the inflammation down. They also want him to keep continuing antibiotics since it is an open wound.

Of course I am very very worried about Jupiter and hope everything goes well and really hope it starts healing better. They said they will call if anything during the procedure doesnt go as planned or if they see anything wrong. So I will be sure to update you all once I get a call from them.

Re: 8/4 & 8/5 Jupiter- PICS of wound - vet UPDATE - procedur

Hi Jamie.

That poor little guy. I'm so sorry you two are going through this.

Onyx and I are sending BIG hugs to you and Jupiter today. You're both in our thoughts and prayers.

:YMHUG:

Re: 8/4 & 8/5 Jupiter- PICS of wound - vet UPDATE - procedur

This vet sounds like he at least really looked at Jupe's leg and has a plan to take care of the wound. Hugs to you and Dane, when can you get Jupiter back?

Re: 8/4 & 8/5 Jupiter- PICS of wound - vet UPDATE - procedur

Oh Jamie! I know all this has to be so scary for you, but it sounds like this new vet knows what he's talking about!! When wounds are big like that and aren't healing, they need to get rid of any remaining dead tissue and start over.

Did you like this new vet? Seemed to take your concerns seriously anyway! Hope any questions you had were answered too! Might be a good idea to ask this new vet about an oncologist too...Just to see if the same one is recommended or if this new one has any other ideas for who they'd take their own animals to and why.

Hoping and praying that Jupe does great through the procedure, all the old icky stuff will be gone, and he'll be home in your arms tonight!

Edited to add...WOO HOOO!!! Sounds like you found one of the GREAT ones!! So happy you got your questions answered before you even had to ask them, and they took the time to fully explain what they were going to try to do, and WHY!!

Re: 8/4 & 8/5 Jupiter- PICS of wound - vet UPDATE - procedur

Although it's hard that Jupe will need to go through all of that....

It is so fantastic to read your "new vet" report! Sounds like you found exactly what you needed to find - a 2nd opinion that was correct, and vet who listens and is proactive.

Re: 8/4 & 8/5 Jupiter- PICS of wound - vet UPDATE - procedur

So glad you found a decent vet to care for Jupiter!!!

A question: can they use a small skin graft from an area of loose skin elsewhere on the body to cover the wound? Or synthetic skin?
