I am so sorry I haven't had time for daily updates here, but I have been keeping Pumbaa's SS updated.

Since my last thread, he's been back on the bouncing/diving routine ever since I took him up to a skinny 2.50U.

There's got to be some dose in between a skinny 2.50U and 2.25U where he won't bounce and dive, and will have nice blue and green numbers, but I'll be damned if I can dose that way. *sigh*

I was so excited last night because I got to sleep in my bed, once again (instead of napping on the sofa), and actually got nearly 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep. How sad that that was heavenly!

Here it is after 11:30 pm and I still haven't eaten dinner due to work and Pumbaa.

I need to test the little guy again and see how much he is diving. Thankfully he loves the high-carb gravy food I give him to slow down these dives, and that seems to work, instead of having to give him honey. Usually.

SSDD as they say. *LOL*

Just a thought instead of using high carb food to slow the dive what about just feeding more smaller meals of his regular low carb food?...some of those bounces you are seeing could be from the extra carbs in the HC food. Maybe try giving him like a tablespoon of his regular food at ps. +1. +2 & +3 etc. to see if that allows him to work off the dose without the steep drops and then being fed HC food that he then has to process those higher carbs.

Sorry, I had logged off last night to eat dinner and deal with Pumbaa. After the hours I've been spending at this computer, I almost needed the jaws of life to get me out of this chair.

He dropped down to 40 at +5, and was diving quickly and steeply, so I gave him some gravy and a drop of honey. I repeated that at +5.5 when he had only gone up to 44.

Mel, I see what you're saying about spreading out the food, and that is pretty much how Pumbaa and Larry both normally eat. When I feed them, they'll eat a bit, go groom and nap/play, come back and eat a a little more, go nap/play, eat some more, etc. And, believe it or not, Pumbaa comes back instinctively to eat more regularly when his numbers are low like this. Actually, since I test him at his feeding table, he eats a bit every time I test him. Also, if you look back on Pumbaa's SS, I don't think the HC and drops of honey are affecting his bounces. He's bounced higher when I haven't given him HC/honey than he normally does when I give it to him. Check out 8/22 PM cycle and the next day (HC given, only went up to 216), vs. 8/27 PM cycle where I didn't give HC and he bounced to 309 the next day. Then again, his last two red bounces (including this morning) were after giving HC and/or HC and a drop of honey. So, he doesn't respond consistently when given HC/honey.

How long after giving HC/honey would you expect to see a bounce if it was caused by the HC food?

Well it isn't so much the food hitting at a particular time as he is going to bounce off a low, but then you add those extra carbs into the picture as well as he bounces higher than he would if the carb rate was the same and he is just eating to slow down the dive and surf. Starches which is what makes HC food HC tend to break down slower in the body than protein. Very Seldom when Autumn is diving do I break out the HC she has to be in the 30s before I break out the gravy just because she is carb sensitive enough to sky rocket the next day. I just try to offer her small amounts of her regular food more often if it looks like she is trying to dive on me, or at the very most medium carbs. Since for her low carb is between 4-5% normally if she is really dropping quick I simple move her to 7-8% and not unless she is really dropping dangerously low to I break out the 11-14% carb gravy stuff.

You might want to try playing around with different carb level foods to see if you can find a couple that will help gently steer his numbers without having to breakout the high carb stuff.

And Yep, Uticare pet syringes SUX for microdosing, that triple bevel maybe smooth for insertion but they are a nightmare to get a decent drop method going.

Mel,

I've been documenting the KCal values of what I've been feeding Pumbaa for ages now, and have seen nothing to show me that he's carb sensitive, and his normal diet is anywhere from 4% to 7% KCals from carbs.

I only break out the HC and/or honey when he's diving fast and I want to slow that down, which doesn't happen when I give him more of his regular LC food. I've even tried slowing down these dives by giving him pure protein (sardines, Stella & Chewy's freeze dried raw, cooked chicken, etc.), and that doesn't work.

Pumbaa's lowest dive to date has been to a 38, with no visible signs of going hypo. But knowing him, and knowing how quickly he dives, I don't want to wait until he gets into the 30's before doing something to slow him down. It all depends on how tired I am, as well, since there are times that my cell phone alarm has not waken me up when I've dozed off on the sofa in the wee hours of the morning and I've missed crucial testing times.

Last night, when I was trying to get him to eat gravy, he kept going to his LC food bowl instead. And he loves that gravy food I give him as that was his favorite canned food pre-FD. (Friskies Shreds- whitefish & sardines in sauce --I have no clue on the carb content.)

And thank you for the confirmation that the UltiCares suck. *LOL*
