Re: 8/31** Harley AMPS 351

Have you been giving him a little more food? I am glad he didn't cry as much last night....must be nice when that stops, right?
This is the start of your 9th cycle on this dose, right?

Re: 8/31** Harley AMPS 351

I think that I am giving a bit more food. Not at one sitting but spread out through out the day. I believe this is the 9th dose of the 7.0. I hope he is not "getting use" to it and going to be in the 300's again. nailbite_smile

I go home in about 20 minutes to test and snack.

Re: 8/31** Harley AMPS 351, +4 338

This is the 9th dose. =4 338, down some but not much. I wonder if Harley is above 300, that I don't give a snack. Right now, I gave him 1 tb FF appetizer - should be 0 carb.

AMPS 351
+4 338
+9 360
PMPS 403

Guys, I am not understanding this. I have read the stickies on Lantus, re-read everything I have received in responses and still don’t know what is going on with Harley. It is almost like he gets some low numbers and then his body adjusts to the insulin and I get bs in 300’s. I don’t think I am doing anything wrong.

He is getting AM breakfast (FF 5% or less carb), +4 snack of 0-1% carb food, +8 snack in number is below 300, PM food of FF (same as breakfast).

I test as often as I can which could be q 3 hours if I am at home or q 4-6 hours if I have to go to work.
All of his tests have come back negative. Should I have every thing run again (I would have to save for this). OR do I just need to be patient?

Yes... patience is necessary... but we can all share your frustration!
May I ask how old your insulin is? Your SS doesn't say when you got a new cartridge.

Re: 8/31** Harley PMPS 351, Don't understand this cat

I got the lantus (10ml bottle) July 15th. Since I keep it in the refrig, it has been good for 4 months. I need to buy a new one end of september.

Sorry that you're frustrated. If anyone understands the feeling, it's the people here. I hope someone with more dosing experience can help you out. Hang in there! I'm glad Harley's not crying for food anymore. That's a definite positive.

My recent bottle of Lantus (10ml) lost it's oomph just before three months. It was also refrigerated.

I'm pretty new here, but I thought I'd throw it out there since I just went through this with the the Lantus. I kept mine in the fridge, too, but it didn't last 60 days. I thought before raising the dose or hanging myself I would see if a new bottle made a difference. And it did.

Good luck, regardless. I do know how frustrating this is.

Re: 8/31** Harley PMPS 351, Don't understand this cat

Thank you. I will buy a new bottle tomorrow. It certainly would be worth it if changes Harley's numbers.

Pattie

Harley is dropping fast (just like everyone told me - the high number is not as high and he would come down quicker). I am still going to buy a new bottle of lantus tomorrow.

He began crying just a few minutes ago, so I have given him about 2 Tb EVO chicken.

I don't think you're doing a single thing wrong, either! I think there could be a couple of possibilities.
  • As others have mentioned, your insulin may be toasty. Some people are able to get up to 6 months from a pen or vial, but I would say that is pretty rare here. Most people use the pens since these is less waste if you have to discard unused insulin and I would guess that on average, people change out their insulin in 4 - 6 weeks. There are a few beans who have gotten longer from their insulin. I'd keep an eye out for floaties or if numbers are just getting weird. Then it's time to get new juice! (Just don't misinterpret the need for more insulin with weird numbers.)
  • Harley bounces. Until a cat is far along in Liver Training School (LTS), a drop - or even a visit - into lower numbers may cause the liver to panic and dump stored glucose and counterregulatory hormones into the bloodstream which causes BG numbers to be high. It can take up to 72 hours for a bounce to clear. You get a low number and then you see a couple of cycles of high(er) numbers. Hair pulling time!!
  • Harley may be doing just what you describe. His body adjusts to the insulin and numbers hover in higher ranges. This might be indicative of insulin resistance. It just takes patience and more insulin to break through the barrier.
  • Harley may be a high dose kitty. The only way you can know if this is the case is to have the appropriate tests run.

pattie, i feel your frustration. have you given any thought to the suggestion libby made a few weeks ago to have harley tested for acromegaly and IAA (Insulin Auto Antibodies)? we may discover harley is just another diabetic who requires higher doses of insulin, but it's time to consider if something other than diabetes is causing high bg numbers. these conditions are not as rare as most vets think.

a lot of good information about acromegaly and IAA, as well as testing information, can be found here: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=375.

take time to read through it. if you have any questions, please ask. if we don't have the answers, we'll find someone who does...
