Hi LL!!

So I'm looking for a little advice this morning. Onyx is doing really well with her OTJ trial, in fact, she got her lowest number yet this morning. But I'm a little worried about something. Several weeks ago, I had stopped giving Onyx her daily 1 1/2" dose of Catlax (hairball remedy in a tube), once we realized it had a fair amount of carbs in it. Instead, I saved it for the handful of occasions her numbers went below 50, to bring her back up a bit. Even then, I didn't give her much. Well now, she has some MAJOR hairball problems. For 3 or 4 days she's been throwing up 3-5 times a day, trying to get the darn hairball out...but not having any luck. Because of this, I'm afraid she's not getting any nutrition from her food, since it doesn't seem like she's keeping much of it down.

We've made such great progress with her FD, but I'm not sure if all the vomitting (lack of food absorbtion) could affect her pancreas? And does anyone have a sure-fire way to get hairballs dislodged? She should be so happy right now being on the OTJ trial, but she's miserable with the pesky hairball stuck in there. I'm desperate...and open to suggetions.

You can try butter or even Coconut Oil which is what I use. But butter will usually work, too.

Poor Onyx! But her numbers look fab!!!

Hey Marje.

Oddly enough, I was actually just trying to give her coconut oil with a syringe, but she FREAKED!!!! You would have thought I was trying to feed her battery acid or something. So needless to say, I didn't get much in her. I use it all the time on her skin, and she likes licking it off, but she won't just lick it up on it's own. Grrrrrrrrrr. Why do I have to have such a difficult kitty????

As far as the butter goes, should it be regular butter, or does margarine work? I'm not sure what I have at the moment.

I've used regular unsalted butter. Neko also loves olive oil, which I've seen others use. Neko will hop on the counter and lick at the salad bowl if I don't clean it fast enough. :oops: Did you try the coconut oil liquid or solid? I had no problem with Neko, but the civie likes his coconut oil liquid. I just pour it on their food although guess who will also lick it off the spoon. :roll:

I have also used unsalted butter. Not only is it great for hairballs, my cat loves it! He won't touch olive oil, coconut oil, or any other oil.
But I haven't needed to give him butter in a while because I brush him regularly. He enjoys being brushed and it pretty much prevents his hairball problems.

She usually really likes the coconut oil (liquid) when I rub it on her bald spots (which are finally gone, yay!). Who knows, maybe she's just extra cranky today because of the hairball. And I brush her daily, sometimes twice a day. But since she's been on the Young Again food, both her skin AND hair have improved big time. Her hair is sooooo much softer. But it also seems like she's shedding more right now, which could have something to do with the food change. So couple those 2 things along with the fact that she hadn't been getting her hairball remedy, and whamo! She gets a huge one!

As of now, she won't try the butter OR vaseline. I'm guessing I'll have to put a glob on the roof of her mouth like I read people do online. OY!!! She's gonna be swearing at me in a few hours.

I would use as Wendy suggested.....unsalted butter.

I just put the coconut oil in liquid form on their plates and they think it is a treat.

Poor Onyx not feeling well,
need to tell that hairball farewell,
some oil should do the trick,
and get rid of that hairball real quick,
then she'll be feeling fine,
but for now we send her a healing vine.

Yay Onyx! Keep those numbers down, but get that hairball up!!!!

What suggestions I hadn't already tried, I will definitely try over the next few days.

Good news is, I did mix some coconut oil in her Young Again, and she ate it! YAY! So that should help for future hairballs. Now we just have to get the current one to go BYE BYE!

I'm also going to try leaving out some olive oil, for both cats...so finger's crossed.

WAY TO GO ONYX!!! GO BABY GO!!​

Don't be surprised if you get some oily loose poo with the oil addition, but hope it dislodges the hairball so Onyx will feel better!

Hmmmmm....I never got any oily loose poo with any of my cats on the coconut oil. :shock:

anytime you add oil, it's a possibility..at least at first. It also kind of depends how much you're giving, but I know you're a wonderful caretaker for Onyx and wouldn't go crazy

Hopefully Onyx will handle it well...and maybe pass a nice shiny hairball....LOL

I can't help but have a certain song running through my head now.....I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts....LOL

OMG you're too funny. My cats are looking at me like I'm NUTS for sitting here laughing at that. Now I'm gonna have that song in MY head...lol.
