Re: 8/3 Kasha AMPS 105 Dental Day - some bad news

Hi Krys,
So sorry about the news with Kasha. You listened to that gut feeling and ordered a chest X-ray, so good for you! You're already one step ahead. I'm sending positive thoughts and prayers to you and Kasha from me and Maggie. Hugs to Blue from Maggie, too!

We're home. She is NOT resting comfortably in Blue's cage... She's super groggy but fighting it, which is tough to watch. I covered the cage in sheets to give her a more peaceful atmosphere. I suspect she wants to eat a bit, but when I let her lick some food she had problems and was pawing at her mouth... I think I'm going to give her some more time to become less groggy. When I picked her up, she hadn't walked or moved around since the procedure, she was just having a tough time coming out of the anesthesia. She has water, but she doesn't seem to care - except to get her head wet somehow. There's a pretty good incision where her cyst was removed on the back of her head too.

Her BG was 157 when I got her home. I'll put it in the SS a little later when I figure out what time that was...

I have bupe for pain - we'll start in the morning. She has to get her A/B tonight so I hope I can give that ok.

She had 5 extractions - including 1 canine and one molar. Poor baby. I just hope she feels better after all of this.

The x-rays have been sent to the radiology specialists. I talked to my vet for a bit, we looked at the films. It's not a large mass - I can barely see it, but then again, I don't know what I'm looking at. It would be nice if they say it's some sort of fibrosis or something. I don't even know for sure what that means - my mind is just mush right now. The good news is that everything else in the films looks fine.

It's kind of strange to me that I felt so compelled to get this chest x-ray - my vet tech looked at me like I was a little crazy when I asked for it, with no real concrete reason behind it except maybe to check for asthma. Some strange intuition.

Thanks for all the healing vines and good vibes, etc. I think we need them right now.

I am so relieved that she's back home safe and sound. Hopefully, the grogginess will pass enough to be able to eat and drink a wee bit. I am sure she's glad to be home too.

Lots of teeth pulled; maybe someone is around who had lots pulled from their kitty. I be once that healing begins, she's gonna feel like a million bucks!

About asking for that Xray, I understand completely; sometimes you have to follow the feeling you have. The gut knows and this time it was wise to follow.
I am hoping it turns out to be nothing serious.

Give some cuddles for me to Kasha.

Had a dog who had a really hard time of it after xrays (bad hips) so I know how upsetting it is to see them so out of sorts. Hoping for the best news possible from the radiologist.

Sorry about all the extractions. She must have really needed the dental, so think how much better she'll feel shortly. KB has lost a lot of teeth. Several FDMB kitties are completely toof-less. She'll probably be eating much quicker than you think.

Ouch, all those teeth extracted. No wonder Kasha hurts. I hope she turns around for you tonight.

Very sorry to read about the xray findings. I will keep my fingers crossed that it is something benign. I hope the radiologists gets back to you soon.

I am glad she is home, sorry that she is uncomfortable. It's tough when they loose a canine - seems to bother them more. Hopefully she will feel better in the morning, after she settles, has a good nights rest. She will feel so much better.

I hope for good news from the radiologist. I've learned to trust my intuitions - I am glad you trusted yours - Good for Kasha too.

Hi Krys

What a tough day you've had ...

DO you know when her last pain medication was given? I'd be worried about her getting painful, esp. if you say she tries to eat and then paws at her mouth in discomfort.
The x-rays have been sent to the radiology specialists. I talked to my vet for a bit, we looked at the films. It's not a large mass - I can barely see it, but then again, I don't know what I'm looking at.

Do you know if the x-rays were taken under anesthesia? This often causes lung lobe collapse and a squashed up (deflated) lung lobe will look like a mass on x-ray. Or did it look like it was around the sternum (mediastinum)? Some cats have a very thick mediastinum which, though possibly normal for them, looks very suspicious on x-ray. We've gotten a few referrals to do thoracic ultrasound on cats with this. (The cardiologist I work with also does ultrasounds of the chest, so we see a lot of cats with possible or confirmed masses.) If the radiologist is suspicious, you can see if a local cardiologist will do a thoracic ultrasound (not all of them are comfortable doing so) or if the radiologist can do it.

And I assume since you said films you mean actual flat x-rays, not digital images, correct?

Honestly, I would wait till you hear from the radiologist before getting too worked up. You might think that's easy for me to say, but I apply this to myself and my animals as well. I think to myself that there will always be time to be upset if the worst is true so there is no use revving up beforehand.

Take care and keep us posted,
Jess
