Well, it's Caturday and raining and booming outside again this morning. Sure has been a strange summer this year, but after last years weeks of 100+ degrees and not a drip of water, I'm not complaining (well, much anyway). One really nice thing though...the local produce is awesome this year!

Other than the occasional flash/boom, it's been a quiet night with China in her usual spot (tucked in behind my knees) and the other two either on/around my feet, directly on my chest (and when it's the 27lb behemoth, that's interesting!!) or pinning me in from both sides. At least I feel loved, even if I can't move!!!

The P's are all in place today, despite some rather unexplainable numbers yesterday, but that day is behind us and today is a new adventure!!

Congrats go out to Kitty and Missy for their OTJ party!! WOW...2 shots of insulin and Off The Juice!! If that's not a new record, it should be!!!

Hoping everyone has a great day, and sending healing, appy and poopy vines to those who need them

Re: 8/3 China AMPS 287

Hope you have a more 'explainable numbers' day, unlike yesterday.

Come on China! Work that juice.

Yes, the weather here in MA has been much rainier than last year too. Haven't had to water the gardens yet this year. Cool summer day, only 70 degrees so far and hazy and breezy. It was supposed to be a nice day with some sun. We'll see.

Re: 8/3 China AMPS 287

Ha! Thanks, Chris! Kitty decided she was bored with insulin and said, "*yawn* I don't believe I like this insulin. No, I shan't use it again." Oh, that darn Kitty; she's so stubborn!

I hope China's numbers start evening out soon. All of those ups and downs are stressful!

Well China seems to be working the juice much better today. Hoping that the crazy numbers yesterday could have been due to the food change. She sure is loving the Natural Choice!

I've been trying to limit her to 4-6 feedings a day instead of a tiny bit here and a tiny bit there too. Once we started on the Lantus, the amount she needed to eat dropped, but she's never been a huge eater, and to get enough food in her, lots of small meals seemed to work better. She's loving the Natural Choice enough to eat more at AMPS and PMPS times though, so hopefully I can get her down from 10 feedings/day. I'd be happy to leave food down for her all the time and let her graze, but the other 2 humongous cats in the house would finish anything she left...and one is getting a bit "TOO Fluffy" if you know what I mean :-D

Oh yes, I used to have one of those "TOO Fluffy" cats myself. That is, until civie Monet went on a D-I-E-T and lost 4.5 pounds. It's one reason I can no longer free feed any of my kitties, cause 2 of the civies would eat all the food before Wink had a chance. :o

Nice numbers for China this cycle. Hope she keeps it up.

How much I should be feeding the others is what I'm trying to figure out now. One is 26lbs (and just plain big...not "Fluffy" but gaining a little), but the other was 20lbs in mid-April and is up to 22.7 now.

Capt. Chunky (Cheaser, 26lbs) and Blubberbutt (Cleocatra, 22.7lbs, up from 20) act like I'm starving them both to death. I know losing too fast is dangerous, but any suggestions on how much they NEED despite those haunting looks of starvation they're trying to put past me?

Hi Chris! Thanks for the visit & food input today. There really is no "one size fits all...." is there? My cats are all feral rescues that were starving when they found us, so they'll eat & eat & eat until they pop. All except our little autistic seizure cat, who won't eat anything but "the very best $$$$"

We feed twice a day for the ferals & that works well for them. They're all fed separately like yours, or else it would be survival of the fittest (er - fatest) all over again! It also gets them into their enclosures at dusk so they're don't end up being someone else's snacks :o

Other than that, I think I'd just take a small bit away each few days or maybe try & feed 3 times a day? But then a howling hungry cat does makes it hard to sleep sometimes, especially when its sitting on your chest!

Good luck to you!

Body Condition Scoring info to see where your 'large' kitties fall on the weight spectrum.

Some cats have no off switch on their hunger drive. One of my civies, Monet is like that. He got up to a chunky 16.5 pounds and has slimmed down to a healthy ideal of 12.1 pounds now. Took me a year of portion controlling the food, meal feeding instead of free feeding, etc.

He has a defined waist now in front of his hips, nice muscle mass on his shoulders, lost that fat covering his ribs, and can feel his spine slightly. He still has "man boobs" as my vet calls them!

I feed two breakfasts, 1-2 hours apart and then 2 dinners, 3-4 hours apart. The late night dinner helps me to keep my sanity and get some sleep without kitties walking all over me in the middle of the night. ohmygod_smile

I'd say that Cheaser (26) is about a 6, but Cleocatra was about an 8 1/2 back in April and is about a 9 now. She doesn't have the big belly dragging toward the ground though...she's getting wider and wider.

Looking down on her from above, she looks a lot like the picture next to the 9

Free feeding doesn't happen anymore since the dry went away. I'm just not sure how much is "enough" per day to make sure they're getting enough, without risking any liver damage and getting Cleo down some. I think she should weigh more like 18lbs...maybe even a little less

China gets more meals per day, but she doesn't inhale it either. She's a "dainty" eater. I have to stay close to her until she's done to make sure she gets what she wants and the others don't chase her off and eat hers as well as their own

Re: 8/3 China AMPS 287,+3 250,+5.6 100,+8 78,+9.7 123

Chris, I actually have to put my cats in separate rooms for their meals so they can eat in peace & I know who's eaten how much & when - drives my husband nuts!!!

It works most of the time, but our piggy eaters know "lurk" - when a door's accidentally left slightly ajar - they rush in & inhale someone else's dinner!!!

Re: 8/3 China AMPS 287,+3 250,+5.6 100,+8 78,+9.7 123

I don't have to answer to anyone except the glares of starving (so they think) kitties, so if I wanted to, I could be as crazy looking as I wanted to and separate them to feed....but I still don't know how much is "enough" and how much is just being PIGGY

After a more or less normal day, China was acting really hungry at +6 tonight so I gave her 1/3 can of Natural Choice (she ate same thing at PM) Within 15 minutes, she puked every bit of it back up and then went looking for more to eat. She didn't eat any faster, so don't think it was a "Scarf and Barf", but I sure don't know what she's up to tonight

Any ideas??
