Checkers got an xtra drop, this morning, bumping it to .75.
He's eating well. Took his med in cheese bit. He's getting wise lately to the pill in cheese, and eats around the pill. Of course, that means more cheese to wrap pill in.

I know it's not what he should have, but giving him couple kibbles, every time I get a decent hairball/mat, from his body.
He fights me on this, and I need to get them shaved a little at a time.

I can't even bathe him, until the mats (they're small) are gone, or it'll make felt clumps.
He's dirty. I wish I could just take him to vet, be sedated, and let them deal with it. Poor guy would be bald, if all the clumps are shaved off.
He is very uncooperative. I'm thinking of buying the soft muzzle they sometimes have to use at clinic, to work with him.

What a little smartie Checks is - :-D Figuring out how to get a little more cheese before eating his pill. dancing_cat dancing_cat

Wish i could help you with those hair mats. Why do they get so grumpy with us when we're trying to help? Hey....Checkers, sweetie...Mom is doing good things for you... treat her nice.. she might give you more cheese.... :-D

I hope you're getting a little sunshine today???!!!

Re: 8/3 Checkers amps 359

Hi Barb. Sometimes you've gotta do what you gotta do to help them. Have you tried putting a harness on Checkers when attempting to get the clumps out. When we put the harness on PurrFace he just lays there, basically limp. Hope you find a way that makes it easier for You and Checkers.

Have a great day Barb.

Re: 8/3 Checkers amps 359

John, for a spit second, I thought the harness was an idea, until I remembeared how excited he gets, when he even hears it rustle. He looooooooves to go out on harness.
He whips his head around and tries to bite me, when I touch his back end. The muzzle covers his eyes too, and makes him just stand still.
I got to shave out a few clumps and he now has a small bald spot on his side. Better than mats.

Sad thing is, he was so sleek and shiny and loved to be brushed, all his life.

Hi Barb: I know what you mean about mats. I have 5 long-hairs and 2 of them mat. I use a little Vaseline and rub it into the mat and wait a while, seems to help loosen the mess. Not nice when they scratch and bite you. Good luck. Checkers has been giving you a run for your money. Just like a kitty.

Those darn mats! I wonder if butter would work too, to loosen the mats. Be nice to your mama, Checks, she's trying to help you feel better. And take yer meds, don't be a rascal.

Re: 8/3 Checkers amps 359 +4/257

Thanks for ideas for loosening mats. Problem is that he won't let me touch his back end, to work.

I bought a muzzle at the clinic today. Been playing with Checks with it....touching his face and neck, with it, etc.
He didn't mind when I covered his face for a split second. I saw how doc did it once....very slowly and softly/gently

What I'm calling mats, is actually tiny clumps/balls. Too close to his skin, to even stick a comb or mat breaker under them.
I can't put grease on them, cause I'd need to rinse it out quickly.

Clinic didn't have cat hair conditioner. Wonder if people conditioner is ok. I could pour warm water on him quickly, to rinse.
He doesn't lick back there, so it should be safe.
Sorry.....I ramble.

Omigosh!!! It worked!!! He growled cat(2)_steam like crazy, but stood there and let me shave some knots off. WOW!

At one point, he pulled a PurrFace, and just laid down....good, I got that side!

Hi Barb. wow and congratulations on tackling the mats or balls. You did good. Thanks for all your prayers and vines for Mags.
Scritches to Checkers. I hope he got his tub drink in today. :-D

I'm glad you got some of the mats out. Furball doesn't like it when I have to work on her fur. She just keeps walking away. Good luck with the dosecrease.

I'm pleased that he stayed nice flat yellow all day.
I hope tomorrow isn't a mad dash to the lagoon, as family will be here most of the day.
The 5 yo doesn't understand that he's more frail than her fat cat, and he hides from her. :YMSIGH: I don't want to be luring him out from under bed for testing all day.
I'm amazed at how docile he is with muzzle on, although he did make up a few new cuss words

I've gotten a lot of tangles shaved off. Sure hope bald spots grow back in.

Hi, Barb! :-D

I'm glad that you were able to get some of the mats out. I'm hoping that he'll get used to the muzzle, and doesn't fight you on it. Wishing for him to give you lower #s very soon.

YAY!!! I am SO happy you got some of those tangles off! GREAT JOB BARB!!!! That is so wonderful for you!!
Glad he accepted the muzzle...glad you got it too....a good day all around!
Congratulations to YOU and good boy Checkers!! :thumbup

HI Barb,
It looks like you worked some magic on Checkers today. Congrats on your de-matting technique! Do you use a razor? I had to cut some clumps out of Rusty's lion-like ruff a few weeks ago; I used scissors. Now that the clumps are gone he can keep them from coming back by himself. I think it was the very warm, humid weather that made the clumps so bad.

Enjoy your family gathering tomorrow. Checks might want to hide in the tub from the 5-year-old

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Yay for being able to get some knots out! Mario had the same problem, by his tail...he just couldn't reach back there any more. I couldn't brush them out, because he had issues with his back, too. Sometimes, I could cut the knots in half with scissors, but I never could get the whole knot. My civvies, Noah and Petey, are long haired, and their knots are a million times worse in the summer :YMSIGH: ...

Very nice, flat day today! Fingers crossed he'll keep it nice and easy while the family is visiting tomorrow. Have a great night, Barb!!

 Ella, that's exactly where he'll be all day tomorrow.
I'm using electric clippers on Checkers. It's the safest way to get close to skin, the balls are that close.

Nice yellow day for Checks. I hope you have a calm evening cycle too.

Interesting condo on removing the knots. Every once in a while Neko gets one and I'm always looking for tips on how to remove them easier. Good job on the kitty muzzle. We used to have to use those occasionally at the shelter and it sure made a difference on the bitey ones.

Hi Barb. I wrote all this out as a response to your post in my condo, but said that I would copy it here, in case you didn't go back there.
Dyana, is this an instance where you would use R? I'm needing to learn all I can about when you use it.[/quote]
I could give J.D. some R tonight, since I will be home tomorrow (and I say that because when I give R it often effects his next cycle too, and I don't really like to be gone all day at work the day after I give R at night, but have done it on occasions when J.D. has been in high numbers for a long time and I need to break him out of it...what a run on a sentence), but he seems to be in these 24 hour cycles lately where he comes down for one cycle and up for the next. It's hard judging the amount of R to give and when to give it, because sometimes I misjudge and then J.D. if I give a touch too much (and J.D. only needs a drop) or if he has decided he is going to start coming down from a bounce at the very same time that I give the R, he can dive down 300 or 400 points way too fast and that just sets up another bounce. J.D. is J.D. and his bounces usually don't last that long. He will probably be green again tomorrow, so I decided not to give him any tonight and just let him be and I get a good night sleep and I don't run the risk of a dive.
You know Checkers best and how long he bounces and you will learn how much R insulin he needs to come down. What you want is to bring him down gently about 50 to 100 points over that 4 to 5 hour period that the R insulin is in affect. You will need to be around to test for those 4 to 5 hours, at least initially.

Good job getting those mats out. I am always super careful with scissors because you could accidently cut a slice from the skin if the mats are that close to it. We used to have a 25 year old neighbor cat (now GA) that would come visit me, and he was full of mats, and I would try to get a little out at a time for him, with scissors, but I was always afraid that if I made a mistake he would need stitches if I accidently cut his skin, and he wasn't my cat, just a daily visitor.
I bought one of those gloves with rubber nubs on it that you put over your hand and just stroke your cat with it and it kind of brushes them a little bit and get some hair out and kind of massages them too. Maybe, once the mats are our, you could do a daily rub over his body and tail with a glove like that to make sure they don't come back.
Good luck with the bathing, if that is next. And, enjoy your family visit tomorrow.

Hi Barb,
Good job shaving his mats!!!
I have the same problem too... Lucy has lots and lots of mats.
Most of them in the area where she doesn't allow me to touch.
Between his hind lets, under armpits, tummy......
I have a vet appointment tomorrow, so I'll see if they can help me....
If the vet says she needs dental, then I'll wait till she's knocked out!
Lucy doesn't even tolerate the sound of clipper.
