I posted a quick update about his vet appt yesterday but wanted to explain all the details. Also I have some coupons that I am willing to send anyone who could use some, I already have some envelopes and stamps please read the message below if you are interested.

Jupiters weekly wound checkup appt is every Tuesday. So the vet took a look at his foot yesterday and measured it and it is the same size as last week. Unfortunately we did not make any progress this week. Last Tuesday the vet bandaged his foot there, so I forgot to apply the yuk gel to the bandage. This has really been working so well for us recently. I normally apply the yuk gel right after bandage change and as long as I apply a whole whole bunch of it he leaves it alone and I dont have to reapply – but since I didn’t do the bandage change it slipped my mind. So when I woke up Wednesday morning the bandage was off and the wound looked much much wider then it had the day before. So we lost a lot of progress and this week was pretty much spent just gaining that progress back instead of making more progress.

I am really hoping the wound will heal more this week. If the wound does not make any progress over this week, the vet said he will need to sedate Jupiter again and remove any bad tissue that is not healing. I really hope we don’t have to do this because I feel like this will really set us back a few weeks again.

The vet trimmed the hair around the outside edges of the wound because the hair was starting to grow into the wound and he said it should be trimmed so that the hair doesn’t cause any delay in the healing process.

He said the wound is not quite small enough for it to be stitched closed. I asked if he would stitch it closed if next week it was a little smaller. He said that if it shows a lot of progress over the next week like it has in previous weeks that he would not want to stitch it closed at that point because he doesn’t want it to split back open later on and he thinks it would be better to keep treating it as an open wound.

Jupiter also has several pretty bad sores on his leg from the tape. We will no longer be able to use the ‘sticky’ tape which was really helping to keep the bandage on. We will also need to apply an ointment to the sores twice a day and that’s going to cause the tape not to stick very well. So with the tape that’s not very sticky combined with the ointment on his sores… the tape comes loose very quickly and if Jupiter shakes his leg the bandage will come off. I am really worried that once again we are going to have a hard time keeping the bandage on.

My other concern is that the vet applied Dermalone ointment on the sores. The Dermalone ointment has steroids in it and Jupiter has licked some of the Dermalone off of his leg. I am really worried about this possibly raising his BG? Any thoughts on this?

His appy is still pretty poor but it is improving and we will continue to give probiotics for a few more days – they seem to be helping.

Hi Jamie,
Sending tons of healing vines to Jupiter for his wound.
I'm sorry it hasn't gotten much better since last week, but it sounds like this vet is explaining things well to you.
I'm glad about that.
Also sending prayers for the bandage to stay on!

But try and remain positive .. you know all of us in LL are praying that his little sores heal up soon and we've all seen the power of this board time and time again .. Jupiter, you don't be picking on your leg if those bandages come off, ok? That's a no no little man!

Hi Jamie,

Hoping that Jupiter makes up for lost ground this week and you get a smaller measurement next Tuesday. If you use the cone, can he take it off on his own? I know they don't like it, but it may be the best way to go in the long run. Sending healing vines to Jupe!!

Jane

Sorry to hear he is still messing with his bandage. If he we mine.... I would talk to the vet about also appying Vetericyn to the wound. Vetericyn is similar to Dakins solution. When I had surgery and had a wound tha wou ld not heal my plastic surgeon had me place gauze with Dakins in it on the open would. Vetericyn like Dakins is ph balanced, has antibiotic properties, does not sting and promotes healing. It is safe for cats, dogs and horses (I have all 3 so I am Never without a bottle).

When wrapping I would try the following bandage tape: http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html ... as=Bandage

And wrap an few inches beyond the wound and then wrap the vet wrap over the top. The other bandage is not as sticky.

Just some thoughts. Your doing a great job in very difficult circumstances. I applaud your perseverance. :-) now if Jupiter would just
meet you half way.

Re: 8/28 Jupiter - vet update & coupons

Jupiter did wear the cone last night.... mainly because at this point.... if he bites it even once.... the bandage will pretty much just slide right off. I am not going to make him wear the cone during the day today but I am going to keep a really good eye on him.

Since last week, as long as I put on a whole bunch of yuk gel... he really hasnt been bothering with the bandage much. He did bite it 3 times over a 3 day period... but when he bit... he wasnt trying to pull up on the tape or chew on it... he would just do a single bite and leave go.... maybe it was itchy or maybe he went to chew, tasted the yuk gel and left go. (and he wasnt biting at the wound... just at the top of the tape - so this does not affect the wound when he only bites the tape and leaves go) However, since the ointment on his sores is making it so the tape doesnt stick (and because we cant use the good sticky tape) if he would bite it... even once... it would start sliding down... so thats why I left the cone on him at night.

We dont really know how long the bandage was off last week... when I woke up it was off... and he could have had it off for a few hours and licked and chewed the wound. I feel really bad about this because it was my fault this happened, because since the vet changed the bandage there, I forgot to put the yuk gel on when we got home.

So for now my plan is to keep the cone on him while I am sleeping, and I will wake up every once in a while to remove the cone for a few minutes so he can eat. During the day I will keep the cone off but I will keep a really good eye on him.

Re: 8/28 Jupiter - vet update & coupons

That looks like the same tape I was using... which I couldnt figure out what it was called so I called it "sticky" tape... unfortunately its so sticky that its pulling up his fur and skin and causing sores...so we cant use that kind anymore

Thank you all for the visits & support I appreciate it so much

Re: 8/28 Jupiter - vet update & coupons

Hi Jaime, sorry the bandages are giving you trouble. I'm glad you're using the cone again i know Jupe doesn't like it, but he's a fighter, and they usually learn to persevere through their obstacles. It took mine a few days & they would be ok with the cone, mostly humiliated. But - it that will help the wound & sore to heal, that would be great. Sounds like the location of the wound makes it difficult for stitching & / or stapling, another bummer.

You are doing an amazing jobb & are such a good caregiver to Jupe. Sending healing (no biting) vines to Jupe & support for you!

PS - if you want to see a REALLY big spider, check out Tigger's condo now

Well I did NOT want to see a really big spider.... but I looked anyways. Probably should not have done that....

thank you for the vines for Jupiter :-D

and hey everyone if you need coupons for cat fuds, please read the bottom of the main post :-D

(((Jamie))) you are working so hard for Jupe. I know he appreciates it...I'm sure he's sorry to worry you with his bandage.
Do you think something like this might help? I'm looking for something kind of stretchy that won't be so tight to interfere with blood flow.

It seems they have all sizes. Maybe your vet has something like this for Jupe.
many prayers for you all.
xoxo mary and ollie

Thanks Mary for the idea....Unfortunately I dont think something like that would work for Jupiter. We couldnt slip something tight fitting over his paw... and I dont know if the vet would want something tight... not sure if the skin could stretch to close up? Also... we have to bandage up over the "joint" (heel of foot?) a little bit so I dont know if that would work...I can mention it to the vet though

Thank you all so much for the vines and prayers for Jupiter.

hugs

I also wanted to let everyone know I still have more of these left. :-D

Hi Jamie. Bummer about the lost progress due to chewing the bandage off last week but it sounds like you have things back on track now. You're doing a good job Jamie. Having cared for an open wound on cat, I know how difficult and demanding it is. Hang in there. It sounds like the new vet does an excellent job of treating Jupiter and taking time with you to explain things.

Have a great day Jamie.

Yes the new vet is great.

Thank you!

Just to let everyone know, I am out of the tidy cats coupons for now but still have plenty of the Fancy Feast canned food coupons left and a few appetizers coupons left

Hey Jamie,
I hope that by this evening Jupe is being better about his bandages. What a trial for you! We are sending really positive thoughts that the wound will get smaller and that healing will therefore be quicker.

Thinking of you,

Hugs, scritches,

Ella & Rusty
