I was going to report on Vyktor yesterday with a glowing report about being 4 months OTJ (longer now than he was on it :-D ) and everything going smoothly but...

then he had had poous interuptus thanks to a most inconveniently timed headbut from Meg rabbit. It was a disaster! He had already excreted a couple of pieces but stopped immediately. He then spent the next hour and half in a most pitiful state alternately assuming the poo position in places he never normally would (patio etc) and then lying down on his side like he was trying to give birth, complete with contractions. I could see that poo was there trying to come (I have never seen his little butt hole so stretched (not that I normally pay close attention to that  ) I thought he might be going to have a prolapse) but all he was managing to get out, here and there, were drops of liquipoo and fluid. This was making for a very messy rear end!

After an hour I had rung the vet and made an appointment but wasn't sure it was such a good idea as he is a feral at the vet and the stress certainly wasn't going to help anything. I left him for a few minutes to get dressed for the appointment and when I came back out he had managed to get a couple more pieces out (maybe I should have given him some privacy earlier  ). One piece had a huge round head on it (poor Vyktor it must have been like laying an egg!). This was followed by a big food vomit.

He let me clean him up with only minor claw injuries to myself - very unusual, if he needs even just a couple of furs trimmed it usually takes at least half an hour of him being locked in the bathroom and me coming back every 10-15 mins (in a calm state) to try and snip a bit.

He was pretty off for the rest of the day with another little vomit and no food (this started at 8.30am and he didn't eat again until after 5pm). He did a little more poo at 8pm - a skinny piece with blood on the outside

Has anyone experienced anything like this before :?: best I can figure is that Meg's headbutt caused the poo that was on its way out to go back in and impact with what was following (forming the ball). Apart from the liquipoo everything that came out was firm but clay like rather than rock hard.

He seems ok today, appetite not great but he has eaten and is purring again. Luckily he doesn't poo everyday so his passage will have a couple of days to recover before it needs to be in use again. I will certainly be assuming the Inspector Poo mantle for that one!

Re: 8/26 Vyktor - poo disaster!

Thanks for that Liz

I would be most surprised if the headbutt and the poo disaster weren't related as it would be a huge coincidence. He's not normally constipated either. I did the check as per the article and he's soft in the place between ribs and tail but I will check again tomorrow when some food has had a chance to build up. That's a very handy check to know how to do anyway if constipation is suspected - always learning something new around here

Re: 8/26 Vyktor - poo disaster!

yuck.
That megacolon sounds awful but it also sounds like a recurring theme.

Could Vyktor have ingested something odd? (like a little pom pom toy which could cause a blockage)
Was the blood red or blackish?

The enema might not be such a bad idea if he doesn't seem "finished".
Vet induced of course.
I don't know what the weather is down there but is Vyktor shedding a lot and preening?

My little one once had such a horrible hairball after being stressed out in a huge way, traveling and being
in a strange house where she stayed under the bed the entire week. She wasn't eating either.
And then she got constipated. I saw the hairball was stuck in her rectum and she couldn't expel it
so I tried to help. It was stuck enough that it tore her skin and then that tear didn't want to heal
(obviously a hard location to heal) and she wound up having laser surgery.

I sure hope you get a nice simple answer and it's resolved.

Re: 8/26 Vyktor - poo disaster!

I think he did (finally) finish. I don't think he's eaten anything strange - nothing odd in the poo apart from the blood. It was bright red and fresh and just on the outside of the poo rather than through it so I suspect a tear in there. Will bear the laser surgery in mind if it doesn't heal - will be biting my nails until the next poo (truth be told I always bite my nails anyway  ) but paws crossed we have no more trouble. I don't think Meg will do that again, she seemed to know that it really wasn't funny this time!

Re: 8/26 Vyktor - poo disaster!

bright red on people almost always means external ( or right there in the end zone)

it's the black blood that's scary indicating something wrong much further back.

I just always worry about ingesting things like rubber bands.
I am so trained now that if I see one in someone elses house , I throw it away especially the little skinny
ones. Those hurt kitties so bad because they easily catch on their tongues and the cat often has no choice
but to swallow them. Just like Sienne's dental floss incident.
I even throw them out in other people's houses that don't have cats.
See how well trained I am. :-D

Our little american eskimo dog swallowed one of our cat toy pom pom critters and we could not figure
out why she was so sick. She wouldn't eat dinner and she layed around and moped. I guess her stomach
was hurting. And after we went to sleep, she suddenly threw up and there was a glittery pom pom.
I'm not sure she couldn't have died from that.

And I chose laser surgery because it was the butt/rectum area. I thought laser surgery would heal faster.
It did and it didn't.

Re: 8/26 Vyktor - poo disaster!

Wow, poor baby. Well, I suppose you could use the procedure that women use after giving birth to keep the area clean and let it heal. He might not appreciate it. Is witch hazel dangerous to cats? If not, some of that would help, too. Max has bled like that when he was constipated, and it healed just fine even though his BG was sky high back then. He had an enema, too. Very traumatic, but absolutely necessary. I give him subQ fluids now to prevent that from happening again.

I hope poor little Vyktor is feeling better very soon!

Re: 8/26 Vyktor - poo disaster!

I'm so sorry to hear about Vyktors bad poo episode. I hope he will be ok and pooing normally.

Sending healing vines!

Re: 8/26 Vyktor - poo disaster!

Serryn, oh my, I'm just catching up on Vyktor's poo problems. I hope he's not getting the same issues with poo as Maggie. Are we sure it isn't just sympathy pains for Vyktor's gf? :? Mags has had problems for over a month. Sending Vyktor some healing and poo vines.
Vyktor, when you pick me up tonight, 'll give you a tummy massage to help, love, Mags

Re: 8/26 Vyktor - poo disaster!

Poor Vyktor! I would not give sub-q fluids at this point. Adding a bit more water to Vyktor's food may help to soften things up. Alternatively, a bit of butter or oil may help to grease the skids, so to speak, and make the next deposit a bit easier.

Re: 8/26 Vyktor - poo disaster!

Sorry to hear about Vyktors poo, must have been tough for both of you. I hope no more untimiely headbutts and this was a once time thing that has passed, his tear heals up, and and he will be OK.

Re: 8/26 Vyktor - poo disaster!

Poor Vyktor. I hope he heals up before the next time he needs to have a poo. I know that had to be stressful for both of you. Sending healing and comfort thoughts to you both.

Re: 8/26 Vyktor - poo disaster!

  POOR VYKTOR! Sorry to read about that. Shesshhh! I hope things are OK now.

Vyktor - try that gum leaf likor! It cures anything.... sure did help me! ~~ Mannie

Re: 8/26 Vyktor - poo disaster!

Aww, poor Vyktor! That must have been terrible! I hope Meg realized what she did wasn't good so she doesn't do it again. Hopefully he'll be healed before he has to go again so it won't hurt as much. Serryn, I would try to make his next movement soft if possible by giving some miralax and lots of water so he doesn't have to struggle.

Hugs to you both,
Melanie & Racci

Poo right on schedule today  I was at work, but from the litter box placement it looks like took a couple of goes (which it sometimes does these days anyway) there was blood again (not on all the bits but one bit was completely coated) but he's eating well and was bright and purry when I got home. I'm on holidays for a week now (DM is visiting) I was going to be away for the day when the next poo is due but I think I'll stay home to see how it goes.

I did give him some cat-lax after 'the incident' but have noticed since that it's out of date. Consistency was ok today firm but not rocky. We'll see how he likes a bit of butter tomorrow, as per Sienne's suggestion, to ease the next one along. I am assuming she meant orally - I value my eyes to much to try it the other way

Thank you for the vines and well wishes, only in LL could we all get so into a poo conversation

Vyktor took off at a hundred miles an hour when he saw Maggie's offer of a tummy massage - he's probably there already so we will administer gum leaf likor on his return  - thanks Mannie.

Hi Serryn,
Just getting caught up and saw your post. Wow, poor Vyktor! I hope all will continue to heal now. Butter, yes! Good for everything. But you have to use the real thing, not Vegan "butter"

Sending lots of fast-healing and good-poo vines to Vyktor.

Ella & Rusty

Yo Vyktor! Full Blue Moon Party on Friday night at Camp Stu. See you then!
Rusty

Poor Vyktor...what a disaster, and what incredible timing by Meg! I'm glad he's feeling good, and on the mend.

We do have Turtle Mountain "ice cream" here, although I actually haven't bought it all summer this year. Great stuff, but so pricey. I recently discovered that Trader Joe's (a fabulous little supermarket) has Soy Creamery's Cherry Chocolate Chip...it tastes just like Turtle Mounain's Cherry Nirvana, but costs a lot less. Of course, I do feel a bit guilty for not sharing the wealth, as I do like to support everyone who carries high end vegan products, but feline medical expenses have trumped the bean's vegan ice cream needs  ...

Serryn:

If you still are seeing some blood, I'd consider a vet visit -- or at least a call to your vet -- to make sure that we're not minimizing what could be a something of greater concern.

And yes, I meant to feed Vyktor butter (and not administer it in any other fashion).

  @ Sienne's last comment.

I seriously hope Vyktor is pooping easily today with no blood. What a day for poor Vyk! :?

Hi guys .. oh wow, what a situation you guys were in! I feel so bad for vyktor .. I sure hope the next BM is an easy one with no more blood ..

Serryn, poor Vyktor! It almost sounds like sympathy pains for Maggie! Let us know how it goes if a Vetty visit.

Vyktor, how did you like that tummy massage last night, love Mags

Poor Poor Vyktor Baby!! So sorry for the upset & pain he had trying to expell the offending poo stuff--
Sending Healing vines & hopes that he will be well tomorrow--I would also take him to vet if it persisted--
Butter may help..Hope it clears up by itself--Hugs & Love from us!!
