Good morning Everyone!

I did not shoot this morning since I'm not sure what time I can get home today. We have a weird schedule at school and I really want to stay consistent with shooting times. I'm not sure how much lower of a dose I could give from .1, it already seemed like such a tiny amount! I'm interested in the 18 hour schedule but have some questions about it.

Cairo was 98 this morning and I gave her LC food.

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98

HI guys ... woohoo! Nice ambg cairo! I hope someone can help answer your questions about the 18 hour schedule .. have a great day!

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98

Hi Jeannie, beautiful start for Cairo this morning. Hoping she has a nice green surf today. She's looking great.

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101

Looks like she will surf nicely while you are at school. likely to appear. You are soooo close. Have a great day.

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101

Thank you, thank you! You as well! I'll be checking in with everyone later in the dat

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101

Paws crossed she likes green all day.

Let us know your questions on the 18 hour shooting....just in case :-D

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101

the 18 hr option is used sometimes when people have a conflict with the regular shot time, or they've stalled shooting for so long that they are way off schedule.

Let's say you normally shoot at 6pm. Last night that's about when you did shoot. Her normal shot would be due 12 hrs later, or at 6am today. You could shoot at noon today (+18) and then instead of shooting 12 hrs later (midnight tonight - which you *gulp* could do) the next shot would be at 6am tomorrow morning, another 18 hr interval.

That doesn't solve the problem for tomorrow morning, of course, but it lets us get through today without too much disruption. It's less of an impact than entirely skipping a shot.

Another somewhat horrible option would be to shoot when you get home from work today and are able to monitor - let's guess that would be 3pm - so a 21 hr interval, and then at 3am (yuck) in the morning - 12 hrs later. Even as i say it, i think it's a bad option for you, just because of the sleep issue.

The typical way people draw up 0.1u is to draw up something more, say 0.5u or 1.0u, then squeeze out drops to get the syringe to look like the picture on the New to the Group sticky. That method can sometimes be reduced, depending on how much the person counts as 0.1u. I know you are already using the method we usually consider the very least dose, the one where you push in the plunger, insert in the insulin, then release the plunger and let it "vacuum" in a drop. I don't think you can reduce from that amount.

Let's see how she is when you get home from work today. At least skipping her shot is allowing you to work without worrying about her while you're gone. Sometimes that's the best option.

C'mon down to the lagoon, Cairo! Just be cool about it while your Mamabean is at work. There are a lot of your Lantus Land neighbors here today!

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101,+4/96

Hang 10! It looks like my girl is surfing  She's 96 at +4. I can check again in about 3 hours which would be a +7

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101,+4/96

That's really great Jeannie!!

Maybe last night's dramatics were her final "show" for the season  (anti jinx)

If she's still green tonight (double anti jinx), she may just be through with all this or she may need to continue with something different for a little while longer (but I sure wouldn't know what else to try either!)

Maybe you could have a heart to heart with her and ask her to whisper in your ear what her plans are

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101,+4/96

Woohoo! Looking good Cairo.

Have a GREAT afternoon Jeannie!

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101,+4/96

Haha... I realized that I'm learning everyone's names based on what your cat looks like in your profile pic :-D

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101,+4/96,+6.5/80

Yep!! Still surfing!!

GO CAIRO!! HANG 10!

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101,+4/96,+6.5/80,+9.5/124

We are at 124 at +9.5. I guess the big question of the day is do I give insulin (and how much) at 5:30 pm?

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101,+4/96,+6.5/80,+9.5/124

How about feeding her a couple tsp of LC now and let's see if she brings herself down by her normal PMPS?

She's looking great.....lovely cycle!

I wear a tiara, too

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101,+4/96,+6.5/80,+9.5/124

i'd probably give the same 0.1u drop you've been giving. looks like she just needs an itty bitty amount for now. maybe we can continue with this plan for now and this weekend you can go back to twice a day.

as i said before, you *could* give it now . . . but yuck. 3am? this has been 21hrs since the last shot. the ideal situation is to keep her under 120, but i think you could limp along like this til the weekend.

you can shoot her anytime now if you want to have the shot earlier.

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101,+4/96,+6.5/80,+9.5/124,+11.5/10

So, the 5:30 am/5:30 pm shoot time is the most convenient for me. It's 4:55 and Cairo is at 107 (which is her +11.5).

Question 1: Should I shoot .1U at 5:30 pm?

Question 2: Should I shoot or skip the 5:30 am shot? I would be able to check a +1 (in the morning) then not again until about +6.

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101,+4/96,+6.5/80,+9.5/124,+11.5/10

If I'm going to shoot I really should do it at 5:30 pm. With Cairo's numbers looking pretty good today and her +11.5 of 107, is it recommended that I shoot tonight, well, right now (5:30 pm).

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101,+4/96,+6.5/80,+9.5/124,+11.5/10

If you want the 911 to be seen, you need to go to your original post and edit it to change the icon to 911, otherwise it does not show up and draw eyes on it....

If you do that, hopefully someone will be able to respond shortly

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101,+4/96,+6.5/80,+9.5/124,+11.5/10

I think we're kind of back to that question "what are you comfortable with"?

She did great today and if you fed at +9.5 and she came down to 107, her pancreas could be kicking in

It might be worth a try to see if she can continue to stay down tonight....that might tell us if she's ready for the official OTJ trial or if we need to figure out SOME other protocol to use with her...or some way to measure .005 unit

I don't think there really is a definite right or wrong answer here since she's not exactly playing by the rules

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101,+4/96,+6.5/80,+9.5/124,+11.5/10

I agree with Chris. She did pretty great today and she came down with food.

What do you think about trying no shot? There isn't a wrong or right answer....it's your gut. I don't know if she will tank on you or stay flat if you shoot. Poor reception on my crystal ball tonight ;-)

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101,+4/96,+6.5/80,+9.5/124,+11.5/10

Well, thanks for all the possible solutions. I'm NOT going to shoot tonight! I have faith in that stubborn girl that she does NOT want to be on insulin anymore

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101,+4/96,+6.5/80,+9.5/124,+11.5/10

FWIW, I think I'd have also skipped the shot and see how long she can hold on to these great numbers.

Is there any potential in the morning to do another food test where you test her, feed her, and then test her in 2.5-3 hours and see where she is?

Also, it's ok to take the 911 down now :-D

Re: 8/26Cairo AMBG 98,+1/101,+4/96,+6.5/80,+9.5/124,+11.5/10

It's not very likely that I can do a +2.5 or +3. I can probably do a +4 and/or +5.5 but that would be about it. I hope that automatic feeder gets here quickly! It should be here by Thursday. I really think it would help is she could have consistent feeding every couple of hours.

Re: PMBG 107,+1/102

Jeannie, what I think Marje meant was to feed Cairo at +9 or so overnight to see if it'll show again on her AMBG number, not that you get a +2.5/+3

Like you did tonight....you fed at +9.5 and by PMBG time, her number had come down...a lot of times we'll tell people to feed at +9 to see if it will bring those Pre-shot numbers down

When cats are close to OTJ except for one nagging number, we'll suggest the same thing, or to go ahead and test at normal time, feed, and then check again at +3 to see if the number came down.....by +3, if their pancreas is working, that number comes down

Don't you have an auto-feeder on the way? That'll help a LOT!

And she's looking awesome so far!

Re: PMBG 107,+1/102

You are missing Cairo's name on your first post with all this excitement. My gut is telling me like yours that she is done with this dance and I sure hope I'm right. Good luck. You're off to a great start.

Re: PMBG 107,+1/102

Sorry....I should have bolded "in the morning" and explained it better.

I wouldn't test her any more tonight except a before bed if you just want to see where she is. But yes, it is exciting! :-D

Re: 8/26Cairo PMBG 107,+1/102

Oh, ok! That makes more sense! Yes, yes, I can feed at +9 or when ever I need to ;-) I can even set the alarm if need be--until that auto feeder arrives!

Chris: Yes, I have an auto feeder on the way. Amazon says it should be here by tomorrow or Thursday!

Marje: I'm so excited that I want to keep testing every hour! Ha! I'll refrain and only test before I go to bed (which will hopefully be at a respectable hour tonight) Cairo will appreciate that.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU for all your amazing patience, advice, 911 help, answering my dingy questions and helping out with my mental blocks on changing the "subject" line!

Definitely making a donation to the site. You guys are amazing.

Re: 8/26Cairo PMBG 107,+1/102

There are two ways you can see if her pancreas is working. If you want to see if she can have a lower PS, then, yes, test and feed her at +9 which is going to be pretty early your time! Then test her at her normal AMPS and see where she is.

If you don't want to get up super early, then just test and feed her at her regular time and then test her 2-3 hours later. I'm not sure it that is possible with your school schedule.

When the pancreas is working, you will see the BG coming down 2-3 hours after she eats. You can try either option.

Re: 8/26Cairo PMBG 107,+1/102

I'm thinking about setting my alarm for 3 am, feed her, sleep for a couple more hours then test her before I go to work at 6:30 (I have a stinky meeting in the morning)

Question: When I get the auto feeder (5 compartments) how often should I set the compartments to open with food? I guess what I'm asking is about how often should I be feeding her. Right now I try to feed her about ever 2 hours (when I'm able to), giving her more to eat when it will be longer until the next feeding (like before I go to bed or work).

Re: 8/26Cairo PMBG 107,+1/102

I would try to be consistent with what you've been doing. Small meals throughout the day. :-D

the idea is that small meals are less taxing on a healing pancreas.

when you're not shooting, it doesn't really matter what time you're doing the testing. it could be attached to any small meal.

the purpose of testing, then feeding a small meal and retesting about 3 hrs later is that if the pancreas is working, eating will stimulate it and it will put out some insulin that will bring down the BGs. If the test 3 hrs after eating is lower than the test just prior to eating, that tells you that the pancreas is sputtering back to life.

a good thing. :-D

i'm not sure i'd get up at 3am for it! but you know we never turn down data, so if you're set to do it, go for it! :-D
