8/26 Transdermal buprenorphine

Other caretakers here have reported using regular (not long acting) transdermal buprenorphine. Buprenorphine is a good type of drug for transdermal applications since it is dosed for effect. Antibiotics on the other hand are a poor choice since those are precisely dosed and the absorption of transdermal vary.

I asked the question about this on the pancreatitis group I am on and read the literature. It’s supposed to be used post surgery by a vet and last 4 days. How were you asked to apply it? Why not just the lower strength buprenorphine?
@Max & Lori

My one vet uses BUP-SR injections with is a long action (3-4 days) formulation of buprenorphine. I had a link for that but it is dead. I did find an evaluation of it in cats.

There is also 1 24 hr injectable formulation of buprenorphine.

I would use what the vet prescribed and see if it works. Since it is an opioid Naloxone should reverse any effects.
Naloxone reversal of buprenorphine-induced respiratory depression

Hi Elise. Yes my vet told me that she is using it for post surgical pets and it does last for 4 days. She said she has just started to prescribe it, but has not had any feedback from any of the owners so far. She told me to apply it just like you would a flea treatment on the scruff. It was quite a bit more expensive than the RX by mouth but it may be worth it since it lasts 4 days. I decided not to get it and just got the bupe I normally get when Max has a pancreatic flare. I know that works for him and just didn’t want to try the other right now. It sounds good though. She hadn’t prescribed it for any other pain relief other than post surgery and asked me if I wanted to try it on Max, but I changed my mind and said no.

I've been using Transdermal BUPE for years on many cats for different pains. Our last sugar cat Noah had a mouthful of rotten teeth but would never have survived the anesthesia and just hated oral meds so that added three years to his life. It never affected his numbers, never made him constipated and with every cat I've used it on we never had to worry about the stairs. Mine did leave a waxy buildup in the ears so all I had to do was keep his ears clean. Andy broke his leg in two places, same story. I've also used it short term when Marco used to get frequent UTI's. Just enough to get him through the night or make the car ride less miserable.
