Holidays at my parents' place are over and Papaya and I are back in the city - which makes me feel oddly like a little kid facing going back to school. Where did summer go

Papaya-wise, I'm glad to be back. She was doing so well before holidays but she just bounced like crazy for most of the time at my parents. I was seeing "HI" on the meter for way too many preshot tests, arrgh. She doesn't seem stressed when we are there, and I stay on the same feeding and shooting schedule as at home, so I don't know what was going on. Papaya did hit one 40 that made the third in a row so I had to reduce from 1.5 to 1.25, but the nadirs were higher every shot so I went back to the 1.5 pretty quickly. It's hard to know what's really going on with the dose when she gets so bouncy. Hopefully things will level out again now that we're home and I will be able to give the reduction back.

We had a bit of a scary trip home yesterday as well. It is HOT here, around 90 F, so while I had the A/C on max all the way home the car was not all that cold. I thought it was comfortable, but Papaya was on the back seat on the sunny side, and she always likes to burrow under a blanket when she's in the car. She had come out a few times to look around and ask if we were there yet, but just as I got to the far edge of our city she came out from under the blanket and had her mouth open panting like a dog. Not! Good! I pulled over immediately and tried to get her to drink some water, but she wasn't interested, so I just wiped her down with it instead and tried to drip a bit in her mouth or spill it on her nose where she would lick it off. I moved her out of the sun and hurried home. She panted for another five minutes or so then switched to just breathing quickly as I've seen her do before when it's really hot, so I guess wetting her down helped cool her enough. While I unloaded the car she hung out under the step in a cool, shady spot and seemed totally fine for the rest of the evening. Phew.

And after all those HIs on the meter I was soooooo happy to see the 98 this morning! Well, back to work I go . . . I hope there are not a million messages waiting for me!

Hi Amy.
Glad you and Papaya are home, safe and sound. How scary at her getting overheated like that. I bet she's happy to be back in her own little corner of the world :-D
Beautiful start to her day

Hi Amy & Papaya,

I agree, I think Papaya's glad to be home where everything is known & comfortable, & congratulations on the 98! Good idea with the spit bath in a hot car - we've done that too, on occasion.

Hope Papaya hangs out in the lagoon today!

Hi Barb, Sienne and Suzanne! Thanks for coming by! I was hoping Papaya would be back to better numbers after a few days at home, but I guess one night in her own bed was all she needed . . . it's crazy how much difference it seems to have made. But I like it :-D

What a difference a location makes!  Go Papaya!

When we did our trip last year to Fort Collins (3 days each way of 8-9 hours) it was 35C (95F) and I had to do the same as you. I dripped hot water on Neko's forehead and used a damp washcloth on her face. It sure is scary when they pant because they are hot.

Whoa, three days? That is quite a road trip with a cat! I would like to be able to drive out to Calgary sometime, but haven't seriously been considering it since it's a 15 hour trip from here. I think I need to work a litterbox into the next short trip and see if she'd be willing to use it in the car, then maybe I will even think about a longer one. When I started treating Papaya's diabetes I just thought I would get her off insulin first and then be able to travel again  She is heading in the right direction but it is definitely a longer process than I hoped in the beginning!

Re: 8/26 Papaya AMPS=98 +4=57 home-sweet-(overheated)-home!

Poor, sweet Papaya! So glad you were able to cool her down. My cats are quite spoiled - they've never lived in anything under 70 degrees - I keep my place very cool in the summer and my car too! Can't handle the heat, so I should probably move to another state!

Her numbers are great - so happy she was able to get back to good numbers so quick. Poor bouncing girl - her and Bob need to hang out and can bounce together!

Y'all have a good night and enjoy being home!!!

Re: 8/26 Papaya AMPS=98 +4=57 home-sweet-(overheated)-home!

Hi Dara! Yup, these bouncy kitties are a head-scratcher! I'm glad to see tonight that Papaya is enjoying lying on the hardwood floor - she usually is quite insulted about being left down there and just wants to be on the couch even if it's warm.

And the heat - it gets to minus 40 here in winter, so it seems silly to me to make my house a refrigerator for the only few months it's hot! As long as I have a fan to move some air I don't mind the heat too much . . . but then I'm not covered in fur

When we were on the long road trip, Neko's LB was in the trunk. I have a car with a split back seat that folds down. However, she only used the LB when the car was stopped (for gas, food, etc.). If you do think you want to do a road trip, there are a couple documents around on traveling with a diabetic cat, and lots of experienced people here. Hoot even went camping a little while ago.
