8/26 Help - stalling (new to testing/dosing)

Hi all! My first post here and I need advice ASAP...

I've only been giving my guy the new food and insulin for 5 days. I only just started keeping track on my sheet the past 3 days. In those 3 days, his numbers until today have been mid to upper 300s (first couple days they were still in the 400s.)

My +6 earlier today was 310. I just tested him at +11, because I need to start changing his schedule to a bit earlier. He read 200 on the Advocate Pet Test meter.

I'm very happy, but I was not expecting that.

I was not aware of the options and I already gave him his wet food...

He's been getting 1u of Lantus. Should I still dose him? Lower it? Not dose and check again in a few hours?

Thanks in advance for your help. I'm so glad to be a part of this group!

Congratulations on getting a better number!! How much insulin are you giving and which kind?

Next time you get a Pre-shot you're not sure about, you should stall, don't feed and post for help. We have a tradition on the message board that if someone suggests you shoot, they agree to be able to stay online to watch for updates from you as long as necessary to make sure everybody is safe and comfortable (or find someone to take over for them)

It will help if you'll get your signature set up and then start putting your numbers into our spreadsheet.

Setting up your signature (light grey text under a post). Here's how:
click on your name in the upper right corner of this page
click on "signature" in the menu that drops down
type the following in the box that opens: kitty's name/age/date of diabetes diagnosis/insulin you're using and dosage amount /glucose meter you're using/what (s)he eats/any other meds or health issues (s)he has. You can add your name, and a geographic location (sometimes the country/time zone matters) Be sure to SAVE when you are finished.

Do you have our spreadsheet started? If you do, the link would go in your signature box too.

OK....I see on the Facebook group you've been giving 1U of Lantus

Are you going to wait until +13 now to test again since you fed at +11?

Hi! Thanks for answering!

Okay, I'll get my signature setup and link the sheet I started. I just read that it's best to be using a human meter due to all the numbers here being gaged by that. I will switch to the human meter I just got, but so far, all my numbers are from a Pet Meter.

Luckily, even though it's late, I will be up working, so I'll test again (he'll love that) at +13 if that's best. Should I post back here once I do?

If he's under 200, you might want to skip tonight so you can get back on track in the morning. If you shoot 2 hours late tonight, you'll need to wait until it's been 12 hours again before shooting (so basically, it depends somewhat on how flexible your shooting schedule is)

If you do decide to shoot and make the time adjustment, you can gradually work your way back to your chosen shot time by moving it 15 minutes per cycle or 30 minutes per day.

There's usually somebody around 24/7 here so if you have any questions, make sure your subject line is edited to catch someone's eyes.

Great, thanks. I actually need to start moving his shots earlier. And to be honest, I haven't been super great about them being exactly at 12 hours already, especially because he's been difficult to test and that alone has pushed his shots late. They've always been within an hour of the 12 hour mark. I need to get to 8am/8pm.

Then your best bet is to probably just call it a NS tonight and start over in the morning at whatever time works best for you.

N.S. = No Shot ...when you purposefully skip the shot for whatever reason, you put N.S. in the U column

FS = Furshot….when you shoot but feel some wet afterwards or aren't 100% sure the entire dose went into the cat (but you NEVER re-shoot....you just mark it as a FS)......like if your dose is 1U, you'd put 1 FS in the U column to show you meant to shoot 1u but it may not have all gotten in.

Seriously, thank you so much for this. I am so amazed by this community already. It's been a huge stress relief to have so much detailed information available and people who have all been dealing with this and know so much. I will mark it as a NS and start up again in the morning. I am not looking forward to the earlier schedule, as I am a late riser and late to bed, but my fiance leaves for work at 8:30am and I have to get her trained for when I go out of town next week for a few days and have to work on her schedule.

Unsurprisingly, Leo's level was back up to 475 this morning. I can see now how I will get to know the fluctuations and when it's still safe to dose or not. But I'm still heartened to know that his levels were going down. Thanks for all the help.

Great job on getting your spreadsheet going so quickly!

If/when you get another unusual reading like you got last night you may want to get a second reading right away. Just to confirm. Sometimes you may get a bad test strip - we had that happen a few weeks ago. I ended doing a third confirming test to figure out which of the first two was off.
