Yesterday's Condo

Late Condo Queen here! I truly don't know where the day goes!

Cinco got my hopes up this morning by going ooooh sooo close to the lagoon, but no dice. Guess he decided to just hang out on shore with China. Nothing else new to report with him - eye continues to look better and he seems to be feeling more like "normal" for him. :-D Counting down to the OV appointment on the 2nd!

Sasha had her recheck with the radiation oncologist today. The two vet techs that were assigned to her during her therapy both made appearances and were happy to see her. Dr. P wasn't there - she went home to Germany to visit family. We saw Dr. Kent, who had me the moment he bent down and went nose to nose with Sasha to greet her. She gave his face a good sniff and seemed to approve. He told me he has two Burmese at home, and he also mentioned two special needs kitties. I'm not clear on whether the Burmese were the special kitties, or if he has four altogether. In any case, he's definitely a cat person. :-D He was very pleased with how Sasha is doing. He said her radiation site looks just as he would expect - dry and peeling. He said now that it's completely dried out, I can begin applying some aloe vera to help soothe it and promote healing. (He said to get 100% Aloe, but all I could find was 99% at Whole Foods. I'll keep looking for the 100%, but I hope the 99% is okay to use till then. ) He examined her and said her lungs sounded good and he could see no signs of a recurrence. He wants her to come back in a month for another check and a lung x-ray. When I told him I hadn't see a medical oncologist yet to talk about chemo, he went and found Dr. S, who was the oncologist Cinco saw most recently. She said she concurred with Dr. K that Sasha is doing well and also saw no sign of recurrence. She said that it was up to us if we want to proceed with chemo, that kitties with her particular kind of cancer have about a 25% chance of recurrence without it. She said she would like us to decide within the next two weeks, because the sooner we start the better. It would be once every three weeks for a total of 4 treatments, and they prefer a drug called Doxorubicin for her particular sarcoma. They will check her kidneys first, to be sure they are healthy, as this drug is a little harder on the kidneys then the alternative, but they feel it's the best one. They will also do a chest x-ray before beginning treatment, to be sure nothing has started growing there. The lungs are the most likely location for recurrence.

I thought Mark was against doing chemo, but when I told him what Dr. S said, he began to waver. He asked what her chances were of recurrence after chemo, and I couldn't remember what Dr. S said, so I called and left her a message with the question. I haven't heard back yet. He seems like he's leaning toward doing it. I am totally on the fence. On the one hand, I want to do everything possible to give Sasha a long, happy life. On the other hand, I don't want to put her through what might be a miserable time if it isn't necessary.

When we first got our diagnosis, Jamie (& Jupiter) sent me tons of good info and told me about her experience with chemo, but I'd like to hear from anyone else that has gone through it with their cat. I really can't decide what to do and I don't want to get this wrong! Any and all advice is welcome. Thanks!

I remembered to give Sasha the Cerenia two hours before we left, and she did not throw up, just drooled. However, about 15 minutes out she both pooed and peed! :o I had to pull over and clean the carrier and her up! Bleah! Poor little thing. She did much better on the way home.

Gotta go get dinner started. Sending healing vines to all in need, and hugs to all their beans. :YMHUG: More prayers to Amy's DF as he begins his chemo.

Not a bad day for Cinco, given that he's in fur shot recovery mode. Maybe lagoon later?

Sasha's vet team sound so thorough. Love that Dr. Kent went to touch noses with Sasha. :-D The only experience I have with Doxy is with a dog and lymphoma. They inject it in the vein and have to be very careful not to get it on the skin. I remember reading an article about it and doxy has a nadir too but it's in terms of days. You usually have to get a b/w done a day or two before the chemo, to make sure the neutrophils are OK for treatment. That can usually be done at your local vet and have the results faxed to oncology, or some places will do the test in house then proceed with chemo if the results are OK. The advance of getting b/w at your local vet is usually cost and distance traveled. The vet oncologist I was seeing was about an hour away and once went out there, did b/w, and found out the numbers weren't good enough for chemo so had to turn around again and repeat a week later.

Hi Tricia!

I hope Cinco will start to see some green. I'm glad his eye is doing better.

I'm glad Wendy posted; I don't have any experience in this sort of cancer. Sasha is a miracle girl and she's really been such a great patient! Continuing to send prayers for them both.

Hi Tricia. My experience with chemo was with Tiffany who had intestinal lymphoma. She didn't have any really bad reactions but she did have early CKD when diagnosed with the lymphoma and contracted a UTI that the oncologist missed which compromised her kidneys. I did not like the oncologist and should have continued getting check-ups with my vet who suggested the urinalysis when I called to tell him what was going on. I'll ask the vet on the list I frequent about the drug you mentioned. A friend of mine has a cat that developed lung cancer which was surgically removed. Then she too had to decide whether to do chemo or not. She elected to do it and her cat sailed through without any problems. Her situation was similar odds wise I think.

i don't have experience but just wanted to offer you a little moral support. :YMHUG:

i like the sounds of your vet going nose to nose with Sasha! :-D

I don't have any experience with chemo either. I just wanted to send some prayers and hugs your way. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

I'm glad Sasha's appointment went well and Cinco's eye looks better.

Hi Tricia! I also don't have experience with chemo, but I am sending lots of vines to you and Sasha!!! And Cinco too, of course.
