Georgia and Simon (GA)

Member Since 2010
I didn't get a chance to post yesterday but Simon is going back and forth between blue and green, depending on the time of day. His scratching seems to be worse again and I feel so bad for him. I've tried just feeding him turkey and/or chicken and no fish and now I'm going to try a few days of just fish to see if he has any allergies to chicken or turkey. I'm also wondering about the litter I use. Do some cats have allergies to the perfumes used in litter? I probably grasping at straws, but I've got to find out what is causing his skin itchiness. The anti-histimine is not helping. I'm going to call a dermatology specialist here in Atlanta today to ask about allergy testing and cost. Has anyone else had allergy testing done on their cat? I know Karrie has mentioned someone she knows that did it for their dog with great success.

I'm taking the day off from work because I need to use some vacation days up before the end of the year. I hope to be able to just relax and basically do nothing today. Have a great day everyone!

Re: 8/25 Simon AMPS 144

aww poor Simon. Im sorry Georgia.

I use World's Best Cat Litter. It is made of corn.

Dont know anything about allergies. I hope you find the source of the itchiness.

Enjoy your day off.

Re: 8/25 Simon AMPS 144

Natalia, I was wondering about World's Best Cat Litter. I used to use it for about a period of 2 months but then switched back to Tidy Cat. I don't remember Simon scratching alot when I used the litter but that might just be a coincidence. I think I will try it again and see what happens.

Re: 8/25 Simon AMPS 144

I don't know if Simon has allergies though. I just wonder if a specialist will put your mind at ease about making a choice about a treatment. If the specialist is confident that it is a staph infection or something like that and they push the convenia shot then maybe you'd feel more comfortable that this is the right choice. The severe reactions are rare. They do happen. But hundreds of cats probably have no reaction. It's hard being a caring mom and hearing about the side effects and not having someone to lean on to help make a tough decision and seeing your baby suffer. Maybe a specialist would see that it is an allergic reaction and push testing. I know I don't help.

Re: 8/25 Simon AMPS 144

Good morning!! I'm so sorry to hear Simon is still itching. Poor guy. We use tidy cat and always have. I tried to change once and there was a revolt by both kitties, so I have never changed again. Hopefully the specialist can give you something to go on. I'm not sure about allergy testing either. A lot of help I am huh?

Thank you for checking in on us and I wanted to say hello!!! Hope you have a relaxing day at home. I'm jealous of people who have vacation days to burn. :-D

Re: 8/25 Simon AMPS 144

Karrie, I think you are right about wanting to just get someone to tell me what this itching is and maybe a dermatology specialist can give me some relief in deciding what type of action I need to take. I know convenia is used all the time without a problem but I don't want Simon to be the one that has a reaction. Everyone here is pretty adamant about not using it, but if it is the only thing that can help, what do I do? That is where maybe the specialist can help, at least provide me with another opinion. In the meantime, I am going to Petsmart today and get some other litter and see if that may help.

Melissa, hopefully, Simon and Cleo won't revolt against another litter. They are usually pretty good about trying different things but I definitely don't need poopy issues along with everything else right now!

Re: 8/25 Simon AMPS 144

I'm sorry Simon is still itchy...poor little guy!

About your litter question...yes - it definitely can cause all sorts of problems! One of my cats, Frankie, is very sensitive to perfumey clay litters. I can't remember exactly which litter we used back then, but it was a basic clumping flowery litter. When she was a kitten, she would jump in the box, and almost immediately jump out and throw up. Since it didn't happen all the time, we weren't positive at first what the issue was. She had all sorts of x-rays and tests done on her, showing nothing. Finally, dense li'l me put 2 and 2 together. We switched to World's Best Cat Litter, which is unscented and corn-based - that was 8 years ago, and she has literally thrown up only one time since then.

You probably know this, but If you so switch litters, it's best to do it gradually (just like food), so you don't end up with a litter box boycott.

Side note: when my husband would scoop that litter, he would sneeze a good 20-30 times in a row - which, of course, meant he never scooped. However, he as absolutely no problem at all with World's Best - and now he's the primary scooper - yay!!

Clay litters are actually pretty hazardous to our kitties...silica dust is very bad for them. In fact, clay artists are supposed to wear dust masks if they're working with dried clay and generating dust.

Good luck with finding the answer and the litter switch!

Amy

Re: 8/25 Simon AMPS 144

Hi guys .. I'm so sorry to hear simon is still itchy and not getting any better .. I know it's gotta be rough not knowing what to do for your furbaby .. lots of information here on cat litter .. not to hijack the thread but just this week we switched to scoopable cat litter .. civvie twix held off using it for over 36 hours .. she peed in it over night last night, but also left a BM on the floor next to the box .. she has NEVER done that EVER .. but we didn't make a gradual change .. I think that was our problem .. going to re try again ...

Re: 8/25 Simon AMPS 144

I wonder if the IBD type cat forums would give a list of foods that may be less common than ones that cause allergies also - if its food allergies and not staph/infection or another cause or allergy. I know some on the assisted feeding forum use a ziwipeak or something like that. Let me go look it up to see what the ingredients are. I think because its a novel protein - one a cat isn't used to it may help.

Re: 8/25 Simon AMPS 144 +6 109 Cleo is scratching, too!

Cleo has been scratching around her head like Simon. She has been doing it for the last 3 days. I thought maybe it was really nothing because she doesn't do it all the time like Simon, but I can't ignore it now. Does this mean that instead of a food allergy, it is probably staph? Can staph go from one cat to another? I only know about staph in humans, not animals. What a mess!

Karrie, thanks for the link for the food. If the ear problem isn't staph, I'm going to try it.

Re: 8/25 Simon AMPS 144 +6 109 Cleo is scratching, too!

The vet said that neither cat had mites when they were in for their exam. That was when both of them were put on the zymox drops even though Cleo wasn't scratching at that time. The vet said her ears looked like they had a staph infection (I don't know how he knows that without some type of test?) and that is why he put her on the drops. Then Simon went on the same thing because of his scratching. This was about a month ago (I think). Simon kept scratching and Cleo never scratched until a few days ago.

Re: 8/25 Simon PMPS 84 +4 61

This is a little low at this hour of the night. I'm going to test again in about 30 minutes to see where he is at. I have a huge day at work tomorrow so hoping things go ok with Simon tonight. I'm also a little low on strips!

Re: 8/25 Simon PMPS 84 +4 61

Awwww sorry to hear Simon is itchy, where has he been scratching?

Very nice numbers tonight, how about coming up a wee bit Simon and doing some safe surfing?

A little higher. I'm setting the automatic feeder to go off about every hour to make sure his numbers stay up through the night.

Tracy, he is mainly scratching his head near his ears.
