Bad news:

Yesterday morning Jupiter pulled the bandage off his foot. This was the one the vet bandaged so I had forgot to put yuk gel on - and either Dane or I must have taken his cone off during the night to let him eat, and must have fallen asleep and not remembered.

His foot looked worse then it did at the vet... a little wider.... so I feel like we lost a slight bit of progress.

Now for the good news:

We put a new bandage on his foot yesterday morning.... I used lots of tape and a whole whole whole bunch of yuk gel on the bandage. He did NOT chew his bandage at all yesterday - and we left the cone off all day. I told Jupiter "if you leave the bandage alone... and go a whole day without biting it... you wont have to wear the cone to bed.... and if you keep leaving it alone... you will never have to wear the cone again". Well since he left it alone ALL day yesterday I told Jupiter he didnt have to wear the cone to bed. Dane thought this was a really bad idea in case he bites it during the night, but I told Dane that I made that promise to Jupiter so I had to keep it. Also said I would wake up to check on Jupe and if he was biting it I would put the cone on.

Well this morning when I woke up... I was a little worried but I checked his foot and his bandage was PERFECT!!!!! no bite marks!!!! Jupiter went a full 24 hours without wearing a cone and without biting it! :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Now today I checked it and there is 1 single bite mark on the tape... I am thinking maybe it was itchy or something so he bit it... but because of all the yuk gel on it... he didnt like the taste and left it alone after that. Like I said... a single bite mark... it doesnt even look like he tried pulling the tape off or anything... just a bite mark like it was itchy so he bit it... not bad!!!!! I am so happy!

So glad Jupiter is leaving it alone and doesnt have to wear the cone. As long as this continues I wont put the cone on him at all.... if he starts messing with the bandage the cone will go back on.

His appy improved after stopping the AB's but then his appy was so very very very poor the past 2 days. His appy is great today though! :-D

Hope you all have a great day

Re: 8/22 Jupiter

Woo hoo! That's so great Jupiter is leaving his bandage alone and eating good. Still sending prayers for his paw to heal.

Re: 8/22 Jupiter

Yeah Jupe!! Way to leave that bandage alone!!

Deal-making seems to have worked...LOL

Hopefully he'll continue to hate the yuk gel and leave it alone so the dreaded "C" doesn't have to come back out :-D

Maybe when he tore into it, he finally put 2 and 2 together and realized when he chewed it, it hurt...and when he left it alone, it didn't?

No matter why it happened, I know you have to be so thrilled and let's hope it continues!

Re: 8/22 Jupiter

Well done, Jupiter!
And also I'm very happy that his appy is GREAT today!!!

Re: 8/22 & 8/23 Jupiter

No cone for 2 whole days now!!!!!! :-D and only 2 bite marks on the tape!!!! :-D and not the kind of bite marks where he chewed or pulled on the tape... looks like his teeth sank into the tape and he bit and then left go. I assume the tape made him itchy - but I really cant complain because those 2 little bite marks, since they are on the tape and not the vetwrap - wont affect the wound at all. :-D Also, since he bit and left go, he didnt pull the tape up or anything, so its still really well intact.

I already talked to Jupiters vet about this and he said its okay to leave it on an extra day if Jupe doesnt mess with it and its still intact. If he had chewed on the vet wrap at all - I would have to change it in case his teeth reached the wound. But since he didnt, and it doesnt smell like pee - we are going to leave it on until tomorrow morning! :-D

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The tape that the new vet uses, and the kind he sent us home with, after the granulation tissue was removed, is kind of like a cloth tape? and it doesnt stick very well - so if Jupe bites it and gets a hold of it - he can just pull it off really fast. We had tape from the old vet... its really sticky... like an adhesive fabric-y kind of tape (dont know if that makes sense but the only way I can think to explain it). I use the cloth tape at the bottom of the bandage to go around his leg to hold everything down... otherwise Jupiter can bite under the vetwrap and pull the gauze out. Then I use some of the cloth tape around the top of the bandage... and above that I use the sticky tape and wrap a piece of that around the top. Its really sticky and sticks really well to his fur or skin so even if he gets ahold of the bandage, he wont be able to rip it off as quickly.

Now the only problem is.... since he is no longer messing with his bandage that sticky tape is still completely intact. Before he would lick under that sticky tape and he would eventually get it loose so it was easy to take it off. I am not sure how to get the tape off...

Last time before his vet appt he had worn a bandage and he didnt mess with it much so when I went to remove the tape it was very very hard to remove. I tried cutting it off his fur... but thats really hard to do when his fur is already short there from cutting it before - and I am really scared I might end up cutting skin which would be really bad. I also tried peeling it up very slowly and it just ripped fur off his leg.... I also tried holding a damp piece of gauze against the tape to help loosen it up but it didnt help.

:?: Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get this tape off without his fur getting ripped off with it? :?:

I would greatly appreciate any and all suggestions or ideas that anyone can think of. Thanks!

Hi Jamie - glad Jupe is being good about not eating his bandage!!! Small victories....

Are you allowed to get the wound wet? Did the vet's office give any advice?? Only thing I can think of is warm water or something oily and both of those ideas would get something in the wound.

that's a tough one. Hope someone has some good ideas for you...good luck!

When Gabby had a transdermal patch, the vet had me use either oil (e.g., mineral oil or a plain cooking oil like vegetable oil) or Avon's Skin So Soft to remove the patch. The patch was really, really stuck on. Personally, I find the Skin So Soft pretty stinky (and so did Gabby!) so I ended up using mineral oil. My only concern with your situation is that you will need to re-bandage and I don't know if using an oil will prevent the tape from sticking.

You could always call the vet's office and see what they recommend.

A little rubbing alcohol should help dissolve the adhesive, but you'll want to be very careful to only get it on the tape and not in the wound or any irritated tissue since it'll burn.

Put some on a cotton ball/gauze, squeeze it out so it's not any wetter than necessary, and as you pull the first part of the tape away from itself, put the treated cotton ball against the adhesive side of the tape and see if it helps to dissolve it...pull a little more tape off, repeat as necessary

Hope it helps and you're able to get that sticky stuff off!

(of course Jupiter spit seems to work pretty well too   )

Really thrilled to hear he's still cone-less!!

Chemists will tell you "like dissolves like" and adhesive is in the same grouping as oily stuff. Thus, something oily will help loosen it. I'd use an edible oil, since Jupiter may help! Or if he's prone to furballs, use petroleum jelly.

It can take repeated applications to loosen adhesives and gums.

Is there a spot where you could use blunt tipped bandage scissors?
