Happy Sunday all,

Today is starting out nicely! Our AMPS home test went fantastic! Like we've been doing it forever. Yesterday I free-handed the lancet, this morning I tried the device, tried 3 times until I got the depth setting right, then voila! Like magic! Jetta seemed alot happier about that thing pressed to her ear than she did about me yanking her ear and jabbing her unaided.

But then I was nervous that she'd be difficult to shoot since I just did her ear, but nope. She was halfway to nap-land and never even blinked. I don't think it's possible for me to be any prouder of her. What a good girl! BG was a bit higher than I expected, but I'm happy that I can check it throughout the day. I'll try for a +4 and see where that leaves us.

Now I'm off the feed everyone else before a riot ensues. I have a bit of a zoo here. 3 cats including Jetta, a feral cat colony outside that I take care of, a dog, a Macaw, and a tortoise. Oh yea, and DH... Talk to you in a few hours!

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468

What you're seeing this morning is a bounce. Jetta isn't used to being in those blue numbers. As a result, her liver reacted by dumping out a stored form of glucose along with counterregulatory hormones that cause her BG levels to spike. It can take up to 72 hours for a bounce to clear.

I also want to encourage you to get into the routine of getting tests during the PM cycle. Please get, at the minimum, a before bed test. Many cats experience lower numbers at night so it's important to get tests during the PM cycle.

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468

Woohoo!!! So glad you had a smooth morning!!!

Sienne is right...now that you've got testing down, time to gather as much data as you can. That will certainly help when it comes to making dosing decisions down the road.

Have a great day!

Amy

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468

Congratulations on a good test. I agree that it is much easier with the lancet device--quick and always the same for the kitty. Jetta will clear her bounce, and as you do more tests, you'll see how long it takes for her to clear a bounce.
Have a great day!

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468, +4.25 246

Hi Do Lou!

Thanks Sienne and Amy. I'll test her tonight at +2. I've been setting an alarm for every 3 hours to check her in the middle of the night (1 am and 4 am) so I can test her then too if I think she's acting off.

She doesn't seem to be feeling well today compared to yesterday. Must be the bounce. I expected our +4 number to be a little lower. I'll check again at +6 if I'm home...

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468, +4.25 246

That's a big drop by +4. Sometimes, these swings in BG can make your cat feel kind of "off." Even spending time in lower numbers, given how much time it took for your cat to be diagnosed (chances are BG was high for a while before you had a blood test done), can cause a cat to not feel great. The more time in the lower ranges and the less time bouncing, will all help Jetta be back to herself.

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468, +4.25 246

just wanted to say hi this morning. the bouncing is normal and will settle down.

hope you have a great day with your furry friends, oh, and your DH.

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468, +4.25 246

Good afternoon Jaclyn and Jetta: glad to hear the testing is going better. And glad to see she is starting to come down a little.

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468, +4.25 246, P,PS 520!!!!!

As noted above her PMPS is 520. HOLY MACKERAL CAN THAT BE RIGHT?????????????????????? She did try to get away from me 3 or 4 times before the poke and about 20 minutes ago she got pestered by her 5 months old "sister" who she desperately hates. That tiny bit of stress couldn't have shot her up that high right? I'm going now to read about Bounce.

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468, +4.25 246, P,PS 520!!!!!

sometimes you just don't know what's going on. maybe it was a wonky test strip - sometimes that happens. you can retest when you get a crazy number and see if you get it again.

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468, +4.25 246, P,PS 520!!!!!

Unfortunately, it can happen. You might want to re-test, although it sounds like it's a bit of an ordeal at the moment. Given where numbers have been today, with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, you might have wanted to have gotten a test in at around +8. Please get some PM tests tonight.

I agree 100%. The bad news is on the weekends I'm generally running all over creation, so I wasn't home from about +5 till +11. The GOOD news is I work from home. So I'm home all day every day during the week (unless i sneak off the the gym or grocery store (shhh!) and I can watch her much more closely. I'm going to run out in the morning and get some Ketosticks too. I totally forgot today. The past 10 days have been nuts, my brain feels like a blob of cold oatmeal.

This is such an awful disease. It's such a roller coaster. I go from feeling like we can do this! and it's going to be ok, to feeling so bad for how awful Jetta must feel and she's got to be wondering why, and why I'm not helping her. sigh

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468, +4.25 246, P,PS 520!!!!!

However, she does know that you're helping her. All of our cats seem to understand that the testing and shooting ultimately makes them feel better. As far as your brain feeling like a blog of old oatmeal, well, given that Jetta was diagnosed on 8/16 and you've been at this for all of 5 days, I'd suggest giving yourself a bit of a break. There's a huge amount to learn and there's sufficient time for you to master what you need to know.

One thing I would suggest that you think about in advance. Our kitties do not always plan their BG levels based on what's convenient for our schedules. You may need to consider how you will negotiate your errands on the weekend if Jetta decides to want to have you around on the weekend. Some "errands" for me have become ordering things like cat food on-line. It not only saves time, it saves $$.

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468, +4.25 246, P,PS 520!!!!!

Hi guys - I just wanted to stop in and say hello! It is nice to read that testing is going better. Sorry for the 520, sometimes it does happen. Mannie has been up there more times than I care to remember. She will come down. I do agree with what Sienne wrote about how our cats do know that we are trying to help them. I know Mannie does. He's ready for tests, and shots, let's me know when he thinks I need to test him. They do know, so no worries on her thinking you aren't. You've done great in so few days!

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468, +4.25 246, PMPS 520, + 2 171, + 5

Is anyone here? I see a few names below.

Jetta hasn't eaten since just before PM shot. That's unusual based on the past few days. I just syring fed her maybe 2-3 tbsp a/d food. Checked BG and got an 82. I'm worried she's going Hypo? The 520 had to have been wrong. Thoughts, other than keep testing?

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468, +4.25 246, PMPS 520, + 2 171, + 5

Jaclyn:

I'm here so you can take the 911 off.

If she's at 89, she's still good. We worry more about hypos below 40. Do you know where her nadir is?

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468,+4.25 246,PMPS 520, + 2 171, + 5.5

Also, if you just fed her, wait 20 mins and recheck.

The BG can fall fast without food so it is imperative that she eat on a regular schedule once you give the insulin. Most of us feed at PS, +1, +2, +3.

Please retest at 20 mins and post for me. Thanks.

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468,+4.25 246,PMPS 520, + 2 171, + 5.5

No, she's been bouncing all over the place. The lowest we've seen is the 134 on Saturday. Ok, I'll re-test it'll be 2 am EST.

She has food down basically all the time now. As soon as her dish is clean I refill. If ity's still there in 2-3 hours I dump and re-load. My vet said for now to keep her woith food all the time.

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468,+4.25 246,PMPS 520, + 2 171, + 5.5

Ok...so breathe and then we just test 20 mins from when you last fed, see where she is, and then decide what to do. Ok? You ok? Is she acting ok?

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468,+4.25 246,PMPS 520, + 2 171, + 5.5

I'm OK, Glad my alarm went off to get me up to check her. She's alseep. But if I pet her she'll raise her head and purr.

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468,+4.25 246,PMPS 520, + 2 171, + 5.5

If you have some gravy food, maybe Jetta will lick up the gravy. When Champ was sick and stopped eating, I separated the gravy from the food and syringed the gravy into him to bring his sugars up. Otherwise, I just don't have any advice. Good luck!

Re: 8/21 Jetta AMPS 468,+4.25 246,PMPS 520, + 2 171, + 5.5

Good. Just for future....in the subject line, we put the AMPS and daytime test numbers in the morning and then delete it all when we have the PMPS number and then start adding in those test results. Reason is because subject line only allows so much space and if you are having to test alot, you'll run out. Just for future reference. NO worries tonight.

So I'm up for a bit with Gracie so we'll make sure Jetta is coming up and is ok. Just post your next test number in your subject line and we'll decide what to do.

eta: gravy is a good idea if we have an issue but right now just hold off and test when she's had the a/d in her for 20 mins. She's not dropping that fast between +2 and +5.5.

Great. The a/d is pretty high carb.

So you want to get at least one more rising number before you go back to bed. Plus...as you get past +6, things usually slow down a bit.

You ok now? Need me to check back in on you?

OK- I'll definitely test again. I'll wait about 30 minutes.

I think I'm good. I re-read the Hypo info and Low numbers info, so no need for both of us to be sleep deprived tomorrow. Thank you again.

i'm on for a little bit if you need help. but a 121 is nice and solid and jetta's probably ok. if you see this why don't you post your next test # and i'll recheck in a few minutes to see if you're ok.
