Looks like a bounce this morning because Blackie saw green last night. I hope this bounce clears quickly and we can see good numbers again soon.

WCR: Blackie seems fine this morining. He ate all his breffis and after his fluids we both went btb. He's had a snack and btb for him again, but all P's are in place.

Nice job last night Blackie! You did good. So let's leave the pink behind, and find those greens again soon.

Hope you guys have a great day today!

Congrats on the green! Hopefully he wont be hung over for too long! ;-)
Sounds like Blackie is doing well over all these days??
Did you get more labs done recently? I cant remember and have not had much of a chance to be online this week. did you find a cheap place for fluids, too?

Hope things continue to go well.

Hi Caroline,
Thanks for checking in on us. Yes, we had bloodwork done again yesterday. You can click on the link in my signature to see them. And though the results weren't better they weren't worse either. So no changes really in what we're doing. I have a question though. Blackie's phosphorus has been holding at 5.7 and he's on Calcitriol. Do you think I should add the phosphorus binder? My vet is afraid that it will upset his stomach and I suspect he doesn't really believe in binders. I'm also thinking about adding potassium again. We stopped when his potassium numbers went up, but they are borderline again.

I hope you are well. I saw your post on Community about fostering. Whatever you decide will be right for you, but if you do foster, I know the kitty will be very lucky to have you.

Re: 8/21 Blackie amps 274 +3 347 Caroline...

Hey Ele!
I never used calcitrol, so Im not really sure. WCF uses it. I wonder if she could offer some thoughts. Have you posted on Helen's list about it?

The binder should not make him sick to his stomach. The only thing I have heard is that it "could" cause some constipation. I think there is a liquid binder that may cause upset tummys. Its often the one vets prescribe because its more accessible through a regular pharmacy. When Latte was in the ARF, I believe one of the vets prescribed it. cant remember if we tried it or not. It was all a blur. The powder I sent you is different.

And yes, your vet probably feels it is unnecessary to use because Blackies phos is not out of range. BUT, if he did his research he would learn that cat's with comprimised kidneys DO need it when it reaches a certain point (usually 6.0). General vets have a lot to know, so sometimes its helpful to do the work for them...and in the end, it could help them with how they treat other cats too!!! Here is an article written by Latte's renal specialist (linked from Helen's site): http://www.dcavm.org/00jan2.htm. He encouraged me to use it when Latte had a phos of 4.5 or above. Im not sure why.
Here is a round table discussion: http://www.vetoquinol.ca/documents/Quoi de neuf/Articles/Round table discussion.pdf.

This is what you have at home:

Aluminium Hydroxide

Alumininium hydroxide medications are more potent phosphorus binders than the calcium antacids, but the calcium antacids may be better tolerated from a taste perspective. Many vets seem reluctant to prescribe aluminium-based binders because they think cats hate the taste, or, if they do prescribe them, they then prescribe AlterNagel, which is peppermint-flavoured, which most cats hate, so it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. I recommend instead that you look into buying aluminium hydroxide binders which are tasteless and odourless (see Obtaining Supplies Cheaply). and which most cats do not seem to notice in their food. Contrary to what some vets and pharmacists seem to believe, you do not need a prescription to buy these products.

In the last link you should be able scroll and learn more about the other binders. As I kept scrolling I noticed a lot on the calcitrol. Sounds like it is mainly used when phos is UNDER 6.0. After that a binder is much more effective.

Sorry if all of this is information you already knew or read. I hope Blackie can at the very least maintain this level for a loooooong time. No more going up with both the labs and your sugars...k, blackie! ;-)
