Last Night was fun. After starting the day off in the 400s, we ended with a lime green 44. Usually I wait until until +6 to get my second overnight test, but we rarely see downward movement at night and I wasn't able to sleep. I'm glad, because she probably would have been in the 30s if I waited longer. I intervened with a teaspoon of HC and a drop of Karo. It was enough to keep her numbers up until her regular overnight LC food.

I hate the 1.25u dose for her. Onset seems to be quicker and she drops to lime green well before her nadir. Hopefully this jump started something and we see some results again with the 1.13u*. Stay tuned for Luna's next trip into orbit.

*We're trying a small reduction because we failed a few time going from 1.25 to 1.

So happy you caught it & I'm sorry you continue to deal with these extreme ups & downs. I spoke with a Medical Director of a cat clinic in my area & she actually was telling me about a cat that she had to keep regulated in higher #s-no ketones or clinical issues- because when they would try to dose for lower #s the cat went hypo. It reminded me of you. I asked if she tried other insulins & she said they ran through all of them & with that particular cat, regulating was difficult, so they had to go with #s where she remained regulated vs unregulated & up & down.

Oh wow, that's interesting. Luckily, I don't think we're there yet with Luna. Despite the huge bounces, we were having success with 1.13u before we had to go to a vacation dose for 5 days. She was getting 50s and 60's without needing to intervene.

I don't see an end to the bouncing any time soon, but I can live with it if we can start decreasing our dose; maybe even get under 1u. I hope decreasing by smaller increments will help the reductions stick this time. Before we were going from 1.25 to 1u

Dan - I'm impressed at how hard you are working for Luna. I keep trying to make sense out of her numbers, and it looks like you might be right on target with the current dose of 1.13.
I found what Amy researched very interesting, and would most definitely keep that in mind.

Keep in mind that some cats bounce all the way to remission. Some are just more bouncy than others. This time around on insulin Furball has been very bouncy. The first time she wasn't this bad.

Thanks. The way I see it, I'm partly responsible for this whole mess, so I need to fix it. It also doesn't help that she's probably the runt and finds trouble; partially torn knee ligaments (both sides), food allergies, etc.

And I'm lucky, there are cats in worse situations than Luna. We've been on a pretty small dose this entire time.

I'm hoping that's the case here. We're getting good numbers on a relatively small dose. I think we have a shot if we can get under 1u. Just kind of stuck right now

I completely understand there are cats with Acromegaly, for example, with a much harder route ahead than yours or mine. However, Luna is having a much harder time leveling out than my Tina did. I am much luckier than you, in that regard. I want to find more greens than blues, and you just want to find some stability.
I have faith in you.

Do you feel bad for taking a vacation?

No, not at all. I meant responsible for feeding her dry crap for so long. We didn't really know better, but ignorance isn't a great excuse.

Up to 449 at +3. I know it's coming but I'm still amazed by these huge numbers after worrying about a hypo only a few hours ago.

I totally still have hope & faith that Luna's #s will regulate with time :), but I wanted to share what the vet mentioned because bouncing isn't always a normal road to remission. I certainly hope it is for Luna & it is early in this process, but at some point (down the road) if it doesn't get better, I would definitely check with a vet you trust to make sure there isn't anything else going on besides DM that is resulting in the BG regulation issues.

The other question that I've been talking with vets & a few endos about is the more recent info in human literature about hypos & how they have found that beyond clinical issues they can cause for people, they now know that these episodes can actually lead to glycaemic dysregulation. So, what they once thought of as either dangerous or an "inconvenience" for people is actually leading problems regulation the BG. Just some food for thought.

Geeze Luna! get a grip! :P

Dan, I have really been liking the half unit adjustments, I am using calipers now so I feel a little more confident in my consistency, to me 0.25u changes at a time are too much for Mowgli... especially for a decrease. right now we're at 0.88 (changing to 0.75u tonight)

That was one heck of a bounce breaking cycle last night! I can’t tell from your spreadsheet, but I might have tried to slow her down early in last night’s cycle with some extra food.

Bouncing is extremely common. Only a very small minority don’t bounce much. It took Neko a year to stop bouncing to red. It can be done. She had acromegaly and IAA, but I did eventually get her regulated, by trying to maximize the amount of time in safe green. Sometimes that meant slowing the drop to prevent reductions.

Cats aren’t little humans.

Yeah, I try to hit the brakes when I can. She gets fed at +3 overnight (and +7), but with the new dose, things were already moving.
