Hey everyone. I apologize, things have just been so overwhelming so I have not posted in a few days. I wanted to give a update. We took Jupiter to the vet today. His wound now measures 1&1/2cm by 1 cm so its a half of a cm smaller each way. (Last time it was 2x 1&1/2 and the time before 3x2&1/2)

Vet said it looks good- and to me it looks great especially compared to before. He only had to trim a small piece off where Jupe had bit and pulled the tissue up a little bit. We are to continue to change his bandages every other day with the dermalone ointment. And his next appt is in 1 week from today to check his progress. The vet said it could be healed within a few weeks, maybe even just 2 more weeks.

Last week when we took him to the vet he weighed 16.5lbs and today 16lbs.

I am so happy and relieved that his wound is making good progress healing.

When we saw the oncologist last week she said the next step would be the radiation treatment. This has me very stressed out and overwhelmed because we cant afford the treatment and its REALLLLLYYY expensive.

She said because of the type of cancer this is, if we dont do the treatment, cancer cells can already be growing in there and increasing the chance of it spreading. This is an aggressive type of cancer and we were so lucky that it hadnt already spread. She said if it does spread, it will be fast and probably very quickly spread to his organs which could be fatal.

She said radiation treatment can cause a weakened immmune system but Jupiter is otherwise healthy so she thinks he will do great with the treatment. She said with the radiation treatment it should kill all the bad cells and that there is such a tiny chance of it ever recurring. She said she cant say never because with cancer - never is something they can know for 100% sure.

I asked her what she would do if this were her cat, and she said she would 100% do the treatment.
She said she wanted to be a vet that only worked with horses, but she had a dog who died of cancer, this exact same kind as Jupiter has. She said that she caught it too late and by the time she caught it, it had already spread to his organs. Its the reason she became an oncologist. Her and I were both teary eyed when she told me this story. She says we are lucky it hasnt spread because its such an aggressive cancer. She said she wouldnt wait long to do the treatment. If we wait, it might be too late.

So this has had me worried crazy this past week. I feel so heartbroken over this. After all Jupiter has been through... I would hate to find out it spreads later. I cant sleep much, its all I think about. Trying to take things one day at a time.... but I am having a really hard time dealing with everything all while I am not feeling well.

I was just looking to for your last post trying to see if there was any news. (I've been off a few days)

Sending many prayers for Jupiter's treatment and for your health too.

Re: 8/20 Jupiter AMBG/63 Update

forgot to mention this:

When I talked to the oncologist I mentioned that I have heard that radiation and chemo is hard on cats. She said contrary to what most people think radiation is not hard on the cat. She said its simple and wont hurt or bother him. She said with most cats the cancer is making them sick not the radiation or chemo. However she thinks Jupiter would do great with radiation because its not in his organs or anything so the cancer is not making him sick.

Thank you all for the support you have shown Jupiter and myself. :YMHUG:

Re: 8/20 Jupiter AMBG/63 Update

continuing to send good thoughts to you and Jupe.

This isn't an easy decision and you do have to factor in the cost of treatment. Nobody can tell you whether to do it or not, only you can make that decision. And nobody will think less of you, if you choose not to go through with it.

Just know that we are here to support whatever decision you make.

Re: 8/20 Jupiter AMBG/63 Update

I'm glad his paw is doing better and healing. Sending prayers to you and Jupiter as you think about your decision and for you to get better.

Re: 8/20 Jupiter AMBG/63 Update

Wonderful news about Jupiter's paw healing. FWIW, about 11 years ago, I had a cat who had a rare form of lymphoma in his hind leg, and he had some radiation treatments for it. The radiation didn't seem to bother him at all, and it is what actually ultimately put him into remission.

Still sending prayers your way!

Re: 8/20 Jupiter AMBG/63 Update

Good news on Jupiter's wound healing and paws crossed it won't be long until it's all closed up. Be good Jupiter - stop biting it, it's getting better!

Neko had 3 days in a row of radiation (stereostatic radiation therapy) for her acromegaly (benign pituitary tumor) last year. In spite of the pituitary being in the brain, she did not have any side effects at the time. Still none - there is a possibility of hypothyroidism, but taking a pill for that is definitely easier on her than letting the tumor grow.

One thing to think about regarding cost - are there any veterinary schools near you? Neko had her SRT at Colorado State University Vet Medical School and it cost 1/3-1/2 the cost of the one other clinic (private) that offers this service in North America.

Re: 8/20 Jupiter AMBG/63 Update

Hi Jamie,
These sorts of decisions are never easy. We will keep thinking positively that you and Jupe will receive excellent guidance as you weigh your options during the next few weeks of healing. My only suggestion would be not to let money matters be the sole determining factor. Remember the old saying: "where there's a will there's a way". Think positively.

We are so glad that Jupe's foot is healing nicely. Keep your bandage on, Jupe!

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 8/20 Jupiter AMBG/63 Update

Thank you all for the visits. I appreciate them so much.

The stray cat hasnt eaten any food that we put out the past 2 days. I am thinking either one of the neighbors is feeding it (they did say they ocassionally throw scraps of food outside for it) or something happened to it.

I am worried but I dont think there is anything I could have done differently. I couldnt ever even get close enough to check on the cat to see if it was okay. It would run even before I started crossing the street to walk towards it. Poor kitty. Hope its okay. Hope its just someone else feeding him/her.

Re: 8/20 Jupiter AMBG/63 Update

Dane saw the stray kitty tonight and went and gave it a can of food (he cant get too close cause the kitty runs, but Dane said he thinks the kitty knew he was putting out food for it).... well Dane went back later to check to see if it ate anything... and it didnt... so I am thinking either someone else in the area is also feeding the kitty - which would be great...... or its sick
