Hi,
I had been posting about Noodle on the main forum but some members suggested my posting on this forum with all of its experienced Lantus users. Noodle has been on Lantus for approx. two weeks with no real movement in his readings of BG. He seems to feel great, eats well but not to excess, drinks little and pees average (no huge puddles like before he was diagnosed.) I was hoping some kind Lantus user would look at Noodle's spreadsheet and tell me if you can make any suggestions. I am so baffled by his good overall improvements but no BG reduction. Thanks in advance :-) I'm freaking out about this! (I'm in the middle of running a full curve today.)

Hi Charlotte and Prop,
Right now my vet says feed him every 2 hours because he had pancreatitis in May and the vet said small meals are easier on the pancreas. Do you think that is related? Forgive me, I'm such a newbie at this and am probably asking some really naïve questions! Thanks for answering!

Im sorry i really dont know much of pancreatitis, so cant give advice about that. But the feeding every two hours will take some of the power out of the insulin since the cat will have a foodspike more often. But maybe thats the way it has to be until the cat has fully recovered.
I feed every 6 hours, but maybe you can ask your vet for how long it has to be every two hours?

hi christi
i am new to this too but just want you to know that my kitty has been on lantus for 3 weeks and is still in the 300's but coming down very slowly. i think mine is due for an increase but i know from all these folks here that it takes time to regulate with lantus so don't worry. just keep on going and be patient. it just takes time but you are doing great.

Hi Charlotte & Prop,
I will be talking to my vet on Mon. and will ask him about feeding less often. As far as we know Noodle is fully recovered from the pancreatitis but the vet said it tends to recur so maybe that is the reason for small meals. But what you said sure makes sense; I would think if the insulin had a job to do on food every 2 hours, it would wear out sooner. I don't know how long a food spike lasts but wondered about my testing results when there is constantly food in Noodle's system. To clarify about the vets--Noodle's original vet who gave the advice about feeding every 2 hours "fired" us two weeks ago, saying Noodle was too complicated a case and taking too much of his time. Fortunately I found a better vet but he came in to the middle of this diabetes diagnosis. Much of the advice he has given has been the opposite of the original vet's so I am on this forum trying to educate myself :? Thank you so much for answering and for your advice. I feel like this forum is really going to be helpful to me and Noodle. Thanks so much!

Hi Nadine,
Thank you so much for answering! It is so encouraging to know I'm not the only one going through this slow regulation process. I guess I'm impatient and just want Noodle to get better quick. It's finally getting into my head that Lantus progress is slow. Maybe 2 weeks isn't long enough. I hope your kitty makes good progress and has great numbers soon. I so much appreciate your words of common sense and encouragement and am so glad I'm on this forum. Thanks again!

Christi- Is the low carb Merrick a dry food? I figure you might be transitioning Noodles still to all wet. That will make a huge difference. Be careful too of treats. When I stopped giving Alice treats with maple syrup (!!!) her numbers dropped accordingly. Alice eats 3 times a day and I have tried to be very consistent with that.

The fact that Noodles is showing other signs of recovery is a big plus! You know you're heading in the right direction. It's hard to be patient when it seems like your whole life is now focused on kitty glucose numbers, but be consistent, and it will happen! Keep up the good work!

Oh, and since you're new, have you been to http://www.catinfo.org? It's a GREAT website, started by a vet, Dr. Lisa Pierson, with a ton of information. It was through Dr. Pierson's site that I found FDMB. She has sections on diabetes, nutrition, obesity, even litter box care.

Hi Geneva,
Thank you for responding to my post. No, the Merrick isn't dry--it's their low carb canned varieties. Noodle was taken off dry food the moment he was diagnosed with diabetes. That happened concurrently with pancreatitis and hepatic lipidosis. It's a wonder he's still alive. I consider that a real miracle and thank God every day for sparing my little boy. He had to be tube and syringe fed every day for weeks and has had nothing but canned low carb food since he began eating on his own. I give him low carb treats at shot and test time, sparingly. I had hoped the diet change would help him faster but who knows how bad his numbers would be if he were still on that poison. I am so surprised when I read that some vets are still pushing dry.
Thank you so much for Dr. Pierson's link. I am going there in a few minutes--it sounds like a wealth of information. I really appreciate your words of encouragement too!

Geneva,
I just went back to your post and saw that Alice was taken OTJ just a few days ago. Congratulations! That is WONDERFUL! I'm so happy for you both--that must be such a great feeling!
