This morning was… eventful. It started perfectly normal - she came into the testing room and I gave her a couple pieces of freeze dried chicken.

She ate those pieces really quickly and then threw them up just a minute later. She then threw up a couple more times in quick succession. Maybe she ate too fast? I don’t know.

But then once she threw up, she refused to eat anything - not even FF gravy, chicken, or churu. Parker tried giving her a Cerenia pill but that just made her foam at the mouth and I started freaking out.

Thankfully we then remembered that a kind friend had given us some injectable Cerenia and it worked like magic. Within a couple minutes, she was eating normally again and we were able to test, feed, and inject her. It was a true lifesaver. We also got an Ondansetron pill in her for good measure.

We also discovered (thankfully before injecting her) that her Lantus pen had a floatie in it so we had to toss it. We’re going to try to file a complaint with the manufacturer, because we’d only opened it a couple weeks ago and it was still mostly full . Hopefully the expiring Lantus hasn’t been messing with her numbers too much.

I really hope this is the last of it and the rest of our Sunday goes much less eventfully. And that she was only vomiting because she ate too fast and nauseous because she vomited. With her pancreatitis, I’m always so scared whenever she vomits that it’ll flare her up. Before I learned about it, she sometimes would have flares where she’d throw up for days and days. I hope this stopped that cycle.

This was Moonie last night staring intently at our dinner. I promise she didn’t get any and that’s not why she threw up . I just hope she’s not too mad at us about trying to pill her and giving her two shots this morning. I really liked being her couch buddy these last couple of days.

It was good you acted quickly with the meds.

In the future with Cerenia pills that may taste yucky (or any pill), you can try putting it in a small capsule, followed by some water from a dropper to wash it down.
I like to coat either a pill or the capsule in a little butter just to make it slide down, easier followed by water.

Will you give her more Ondansetron today? (it can be given every 8 hours).

It’s great you have the meds on hand, I think that’s half the battle is when you don’t have them in the house then a crisis arises, so good job on that

Don’t be embarrassed, it’s always a learning curve.
I’m still learning all the time. Everyone here is still teaching me every single day.
So much to know.
And until you are up against something, you just don’t know!

This is AMAZING!! Thank you!!! This somehow captures the very essence of Moonie and her passions so well. I’m going to save this so I can revisit it. She looks EXACTLY like this every time we cook meat in the house especially chicken or shrimp.

I would invest in some empty gel caps for the Cerenia. Its tastes so dreadful and dissolves so quickly. I buy size 3, but size 4 or even 5 would work for pill pieces. 5 is smallest. 3's are easiest to find tho. I get mine on Amazon.

Thank you so much Jo! I immediately bought size 4 capsules on Amazon after Staci mentioned it. I don’t know why we didn’t think about it before. But I was so upset watching her foam and look so miserable that I’m glad we have a better solution for next time.

I was going to suggest it and Staci beat me to it. I could put a 4 mg chunk of cerenia (1/4 of the 16 mg tab) and 2 mg of ondansetron in a size 5 gel cap. I always ask for the Aurobindo (manufacturer) ondansetron as it is much smaller at the same dose (4 mgs for the entire tab).

If you have Walgreens, they should be able to get it. The 4 mg should be fine. Tobey was 12 lbs and I gave him 2 mg 3/day.

Yes it makes a HUGE difference because both those meds are very bitter. Just be sure you give her water before and water/food after so the cap doesn’t get stuck in her throat.
