At PMPS Zeus' BG was only 75. I tested in 15 min, it was 74. Tested again 45 min later, down to 71. I didn't give him a shot, but debated whether I should. The deciding factor was that he didn't eat all of his food. At +2 the BG rose to162. he normally has another meal, well an hour ago actually, but he does not seemed to be interested. I'm going to try to get another test in to see what is happening at this point.

I wasn't able to get a mid day test, but his amps was 338, so I wasn't too worried. Any thoughts on what tonight's numbers are telling me? I just increased from 1.5 to 1.75 lantus bid. Is this an overlap? Too much of an increase? I welcome all thoughts and suggestions as that is how I'll learn to keep up in this dance.

Thanks much,
Kathie and Zeus

Hi Kathie,

I think the major problem is that there is not enough food in his belly. It's not too much of an increase from looking at his ss but it's too much to give a non-eating cat. I noticed he's vomiting and not eating much. Is there another issue with his health?

Hi Melanie,

Actually, the new Vet yesterday did a ton of tests and today she called with the results. Everything is good, she was very pleased. The only thing we're waiting for is the urine culture, but that will take a few days. I was so happy to hear that, as I have been worried about the vomiting as well. Both Vets have said they thought the vomiting was from the hairballs, but the new Vet yesterday said that she wanted to test for everything as there is always the possibility of something else - pancreatitis? I was happy to do so - had tried to get our current Vet to do something but he just said that he wasn't concerned about it. The new Vet did give us some Cerenia for the vomiting, she said it might make him sleepy. He seemed to be pretty normal today though.

It almost seems that he is getting tired of the Fancy Feast. I say seems because he turns his nose up at it, but at the same time he'll go eat out of Smokey's bowl - she gets the same food, and even the same flavor usually. LOL. I've tried mixing flavors to gain some interest, works once or twice, and now I'm introducing Evo 95%. Need to experiment with some more food, and/or some parmesan.

Thanks for the response.

Kathie,
Are their bowls identical? This might sound odd, but maybe try a different bowl? My civvie Mullet was having teeth trouble earlier this year and stopped eating. I had to give him mushy stuff like watered down canned chicken mashed up, baby food, yogurt, etc because his broken tooth had caused sores on his tongue. Anyway, I started feeding him off of a bread plate instead of the bowl, just a spoonful of 3 or 4 different things laid out on the plate. Well, he's back to eating normal food again, but he won't eat it out of his old bowl any more. He wants it on a plate instead, and he'll scarf it right down.

Maybe just try a different "presentation" and see if he'll eat the FF?

I thought that too, but it doesn't seem to matter which bowl/dish I use. I purposely switched their dishes and he still went to where Smokey had been eating (he at least waits until she's finished). I've even gone out and bought new dishes/bowls, all shapes and sizes, some deeper, some more flat, more oval than round, etc. I thought it was because his whiskers were hitting the side of the bowl, but no.

Since we're on the topic of the bowl/dishes.... both of my cats make a mess when eating. Smokey is not quite as bad, usually only a few little bits of food to clean up. But Zeus make a huge mess. He also likes to take the food out of the bowl and place it on the floor before eating it. I'm constantly sweeping and cleaning the floor. Anyone else have messy eaters?

Mullet insists on taking the food out of the bowl or off the plate, dropping it on the floor, and eating it off the floor at least a couple mouthfuls per meal. It seems to depend on how much I "cut it up" before giving it to him. He gets a can of FF, or 3/4 can of Friskees per meal. If I just like chop it up into chunks, he does the drop-it-on-the-floor routine. Lately, I have been flattening it with the spoon to make it more like a "spread" and he doesn't do it as much. It also takes him longer to eat it, which is nice because both he and Bob are big-time hoovers at meal time. 10 minutes later, they are looking for desert.
