Score for today: Rusty 2, Clavamox 0. Total failure!

After this morning's failure we went back to the vet to get the Clavamox in pills, but they were as difficult to get into him as the liquid, even with the pill shooter. Tonight he hooked onto my hand with his claws and it took over a minute to get free. He's impossible to wrap in a towel. He struggles so mightily that I don't think we'll be able to give him these meds. I can't get anywhere near his mouth. He may have to heal himself! In any event, he didn't vomit today. He mistrusts us now, too. What a nightmare! I don't know how you people who give meds all the time do it. Will get some Renew Ultimate tomorrow on the slight chance that we will succeed in getting the Clavamox into him.

Off to veg out.

Vet's don't like doing it much, but there are antibiotics that are injectable for those tough customers that refuse to be pilled. Might be worth a phone call to see if there's something you can use that doesn't involve teeth and claws

Rusty....you stop giving your mama grief!! She's just trying to make you feel better!!

I'm so sorry it's so difficult to get the Clavamox into Rusty. Slippery Elm Bark can also be used to help thin mucus and help with congestion. I wonder if that would help the pneumonia? Sending prayers.

I was just reading to see if there is an injectable form and I couldn't find one.
Clavamox is the best one for respiratory infections.....

you might give a call to diamondbackdrugs tomorrow and ask if it's possible for them to create one for you given the situation.

Bummer on the meds failture. Rusty is one strong kitty dude.

Rusty - they are just trying to help you feel better.

Any chance a vet tech will come by on the way to work and help?

(((((((((Ella, Rusty, Edward))))))))) So sorry to hear Rusty is such a PITA to medicate, I wonder if you could try putting the pill into a gelcap and cover it with something like a Pill Pocket? I was able to get my Buster pilled that way. Deep breaths, I know hot utterly exasperated you feel trust me, it is no fun getting into a wrestling match with a kitty- tomorrow will be a better day hopefully! :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Wendy has a good suggestion, maybe a vet tech could help?

Thanks for all your suggestions. This is one of those times I wish we didn't live in the boonies. Even if one of the vet techs lived near here, Rusty is well known by them! They are not surprised that he is being so wild.
I did ask the vet about injectables, and she said that Clavamox is the best antibiotic for pneumonia and that it does not come in injectable form.
So tomorrow morning we will try again. Rusty is at least eating his fuds. And I found a new food at a tiny holistic pet food store in Lake Placid. It is called "Rawz" and it is made in Maine. It is 95% meat and the meat is steamed. The company gives 100% of its profits to charity. The owner was the man who started "Wellness" years ago. I will try Rusty on the Chicken and Chicken Liver tomorrow. I also bought Turkey.

'night all. Thanks for thinking of Rusty and sending vines.

Not sure if this would work for him, but someone on the board suggested using a cat sack when I wasn't able to medicate my little Iris. She is only 6 pounds, but she is full of feisty, squirmy energy and turns into a 10-legged monster when I try to restrain her. I initially thought that there was no way that I could ever get her into one of those bags, but she didn't mind it and being confined actually calmed her down. I've been using it ever since and she is still totally fine with it. So it might be worth a shot.

I have never had any luck with duck and pea pill pockets. The chicken flavour has always worked better for Pinkerton and for Lucy (up until recently when I had to start pressing a crunchy treat into the pill pocket to get her to eat it).

Sorry! I just went through that with Tiff last weekend! Clavamox made her very nauseous and it was horrible trying to get her to take a pill! Went back to the vet and was given an antibiotic shot that will last 14 days. I don't know why my vet didn't offer that to begin with!

I had so much trouble with Yum's zeniquin last spring, I just took her to the vet once a day to be pilled. Of course my vet is close by.
I sometimes grind pills up and mix them with butter then smear it on their fur. They groom it off. I bet clavamox is really nasty tasting though.
I know people on this forum use cat sacks.

That must have been Convenia, a play on convenient. Some people worry it is not safe because it last 14 days. If it's the wrong antibiotic, I think you have to wait 14 days to try another. And if it disagrees with the animal, you are stuck. It is wonderful though.

Interesting...and good to know. She seems to be feeling 100 percent better and her bg numbers have been really good. Hope it is working!!

Rusty got Convenia today, too. It was a last resort! Yes, we tried the pill pockets. Didn't try the cat sack, but did have a big towel.
He seems to be doing well and so far no reactions to the Convenia.

Thanks, everyone, for your helpful suggestions. Keep those vines coming.
Going to start today's condo now.
