This morning at 6 a.m. (+10), we heard what sounded like someone stepping on one side of a plate to make the other side go up in the air and then taking their foot off so the plate comes down with a satisfying noise. It was Johnny saying the food was gone! Smarty pants. I think we need to come up with one flavor that is the overnight flavor, as some go faster than others so it's hard to gauge what's enough. We try to put out more than we think they'll eat, but it's not fool-proof.

So, Johnny ate 2 hours before his test this a.m. I guess we should have taken his number before the snack? Either way, he likely was going to get a shot today anyway. Brian will keep checking him each hour for a bit to hopefully catch him in his free-fall and get him surfing.

Re: 8/16 Johnny AMPS 289 +3(112)

 Johnny is a little smarty pants... that +3 is looking better....come on Johnny (you know you shouldn't eat so close to AMPS time...) They find such funny ways to get their points across!

Slightly on the rise at +5.5. Fingers crossed that he's firmly on the surfboard now!

Re: 8/16 Johnny PMPS 261

So, today is our first double shot day since 7/20. I just looked back and he's only had 7 shots in August so far...and 4 have been in the last three days. The insulin is dropping him quickly and low, but he's just not getting any traction in the normal range anymore. He's like a bouncy ball.

We're not doing anything differently. I just don't understand. Do you think the "drop of insulin when needed" program has become too inconsistent for his pancreas/shed? Or is it normal to have a situation like this? Does he need more insulin? I really hope he flattens out a bit soon.

Re: 8/16 Johnny PMPS 261

Could that explain why he creeps up after 6 hours or so? I thought there would be diminished response, but across the boards. Is it possible that the insulin just packs a punch in the beginning of the cycle? I'm kind of afraid of new insulin with the way he's dropping so fast!

Re: 8/16 Johnny PMPS 261 - aging insulin question

See question in above post.

Our vial is three months and a few days old. Clear. No floaties. Still creating a big drop early in the cycle and then backing off. Is this anyone else's experience?

Re: 8/16 Johnny PMPS 261 - aging insulin question

Trouble's insulin is at about the exact same place (3 months). I seem to be seeing a diminished effectiveness, but not sure if it is just the way his body is reacting to it now. Like you, I don't see floaties, but wonder if it needs to be replaced. At this point, I wonder if I shouldn't get a new bottle just to be on the safe side. Let me know what you decide to do!

Re: 8/16 Johnny PMPS 261 - aging insulin question

I just replaced Kazi's insulin at 3 months and 1 day after a couple of days of slightly higher numbers. Hers was clear, no floaties etc. She went right back down to her lower 'normal' AMPS & PMPS after a day on the new Lantus. So I have got to figure it was just time to replace it! I watched her closely the first night but she didn't do anything dramatic being on fresh insulin.

surf, Johnny, surf!

Janice, I've been studying Johnny's spreadsheet, but I want to look at it some more tomorrow. It does seem to be time to change something. New insulin might be something to try, but then again look at the drop Johnny is getting on old insulin, new insulin might be TOO potent. What Johnny needs is more duration, and new insulin might give him that. You would have to monitor to keep him from dropping too low. Just feed him to get him surfing, like you already are.

I'll study more tomorrow, when I'm more awake. I'm sure Jill will stop by too.
