(Haven’t posted in awhile, and here we are with a potential emergency or at least big snafu.)

Help! I accidentally let my Alice get a hold of some chocolate pudding. I’ve been struggling with some chronic fatigue and other issues so I just... messed up.

She may have had a tablespoon or so.

Concerns:
The sugar and her diabetes
The milk/everything else and her IBD
Most importantly: How much chocolate is an emergency for cats? What are the components of chocolate that are harmful to them? (Maybe I can look up this product and see if it is as detrimental as other chocolate products?)
We already get assistance for her insulin and help from friends and family to get by. Is this an emergency? Can I treat with something anti-emetic????? It’s a Sunday so of course ER vet is the only choice.

Also her sugar... will be so so high........ Her shot time was going to be in another 1.5 hours.

I’ve never been through this one! :(

I had a lot of other questions and had just finished updating her SS I’ve been behind on. Her numbers have already been too high lately, and observing if infection?? And thinking she already needs a dose increase. Thoughts on that appreciates too. Thank you so much.

ETA: from post below:

I looked up chocolate and cats online. You may want to call the ER vet or the poison help line (see first link) and ask just to be safe. It depends on the amount of an ingredient in the chocolate. Sorry for any confusion.

First chocolate is not immediately bad for cats. It takes time to build up in their systems. I'll reply more in another post. :bighug:

I can't say how it will affect her IBD. It may make her numbers go up, but they will come back down. All you can do for that is wait it out. Cats get into contraband all the time and are high for just a little bit and them get back on track.

Unless you are wanting to move her shot time, I'd shoot at the normal time. She will come back down on her own. It's best to not try and bring her numbers down or you can end up with too much insulin.

She does need a dose increase. I'd increase to 1.25 units and see if that helps. Keep in mind her numbers may be influenced today from the chocolate.

Can you please tell us what kind of chocolate pudding it was? If it was from the package - that often has so little chocolate in it, there may be no affect at all. Look at the ingredients on the box...

Luci has eaten a lot of contraband ... lots of chocolates...most of them are like KitKat bars and Hershey's Kisses...not a lot of pure chocolate in those...most candy is made so cheaply these days, there's chocolate flavoring, etc...but where are the real chocolate nibs?

Let us know...how is she doing otherwise?

Generic Walmart brand instant pudding mix with 2% cows milk.

Probably like a lot of cheaply made foods - the chocolate flavoring that was used in that product is not likely going to cause an issue...I've eaten lobster bisque where I thought the lobster was waved over the top of the pot...no lobster in sight...

You could look it up on line to see what their other ingredients are...

Thanks! The FD fb group has kinda told me the same thing now. I was just really worried if it was an immediate emergency versus, wait it out and monitor. I think with dogs it is basically always an emergency, right??

I need to talk to some IBD kitty people now and find out how this will affect her in other areas. We don’t have a handle on her bowel issues yet. :\ I wonder too if a flare of IBD issues could cause her body to respond as though she had an infection, perhaps have an effect on glucose levels?
A little concerned about how much diarrhea this may cause her and if I need to worry about her fluids later...

441 @ +11.25

I will be shooting with the food influence obviously, at her regular time, and I will be increasing from 1f to 1.25 as I already thought it was looking like she needed it.

I’m still feeling so lost on the IBD issue. The FD is easier to understand it feels like, or else it’s just bad timing this year with my having increased cognitive difficulties.

One thing I wonder is, can inflammation from conditions like IBD have an effect on blood glucose? I wonder sometimes if some bloodwork indicating infection was actually not infection but her immune system being overactive. So many body systems that are affected. :\

When Chai was a baby she got locked in my living room over night. She found a foil covered chocolate hear and ate some of the chocolate. I freaked and looked it up on the internet. Since I had no idea when it happened it was too late to induce vomiting I just watched her and she was fine. They aren’t supposed to like sweet things but clearly neither she or Alice got that memo. I had forgotten the chocolate was still out though I never would have thought she would eat it. It was very old and only left in the dish as decoration and because I knew I’d never be tempted. They were in red foil. I think Alice will be fine.

I didn't notice much difference with Neko. Her GI inflammation may have been SCL instead of IBD, but when budesonide brought down the inflammation, her blood sugar didn't change any. Just improved her appetite. As for pudding, there is milk in there too. My IBD kitty once licked the bowl I'd had yogurt in, and she vomited within minutes and then was back to normal.

When it comes to chocolate...higher content cacao specifically dark chocolate is a no no. Milk chocolate has a low percent of dark chocolate. Don't worry too much. These kitties do have a sweet tooth. I've heard some kitties like cantaloupe:facepalm:

ETA: I'm not telling you not to monitor though. ;):bighug:
