Hi Everyone,

We took Rusty to the vettybean today and he has pneumonia. He had a lung x-ray and blood tests, among other things. The vet thinks we caught it early, since his temperature was normal. He does have increased white blood cells.
His nose and throat were really producing "gunk" today, and his breathing sounded worse (he has chronic congestion, so I was thinking this was just a flare-up of that). I'm glad we went to the vet. Rusty had his first "serving" of Clavamox at the vet's, and starting tomorrow morning we get to try to see if we can get some into him! Any suggestions?
His appetite has been poor. But when he got home from the vet he ate everything in his bowl.

Oh no! Poor Rusty. I'm glad you caught it early. Don't forget to give him a probiotic along with the antibiotic. Sorry no advice on giving the liquid. I hope you can get it into him. Sending prayers.

Well, after six months of clav our routine was down pat.

First ditch the eye dropper thing that comes with the bottle. Too slow to dispense and not accurate with dosing.

I used a 1ml syringe, drew up the dose, 2nd syringe drew up 1ml water chaser.

I sat criss cross on the floor, cat in my lap, his spine to my breastbone, left arm in front on him and he put his front paws on my arm. Kind of like he was riding a ferris wheel. Right hand puts syringe to right side of lips, where top and lower lip meet by jaw, syringe in, open teeth, squirt clav, squirt water chaser.

The water chaser helped him a lot.

Oh poor Rusty!
I've never given Boomer liquid meds but when we have to give Allen meds it takes two of us. At first we wrapped him in a cocoon and DH held him while I administered the meds and water. Now he's a bit more used to it so we don't use the cocoon any more.

RE:the clavamox, thank God I did not have to give too many oral meds to Tiger but what worked for me was approaching Tiger when she had just woken up from a nap. I slipped my left hand around her neck to open up the right corner of her mouth and slipped the dropper in with my right hand(I am right handed). Good luck and best wishes for a speedy recovery.
 
I'm so sorry to hear, poor Rusty and glad you caught it early. Civie Moo is a beast of all beasts and I was able to get the clavamox down with a regular 1ml syringe but not the dropper as noted above. Had to do the old fashioned not to my liking scruff and shoot technique. Everyone told me how bad it tastes but she had no issues. Sending mega feel better vines for Sir Rusty and :bighug::bighug::bighug: for you.
 
With me I know Marvin is difficult so I try to always check if they have option for a shot instead. I know not all AB have a shot available, but have been lucky to date. The good news is that I think I could do it now, as the cabergoline is in a syringe, what I like it really squirts and is fast. If it wasn't fast I don't think it would work for Marvin.
 
yikes, i'm not happy to come on here and discover that our little buddy is sick!! Sending our best healing vines to Rusty! Hopefully the Clavamox will kick in quickly and help make him feel better.

Don't forget a probiotic to keep him from getting diarrhea or c. difficile from the antibiotics. Great info on the Where Can I Find? link about:
Digestive Problems:
Constipation, Maggie11 & Ann; Feline Constipation
Fortiflora
Hairballs/Chronic Vomiting
Probiotics in IBD (or other) cats
Probiotics, S. Boulardii to stop Diarrhea, Constipation & Flaxseed
Antacids (Pepcid)

We had good results from giving a probiotic - you can give any human one, either by opening a capsule and mixing it with his food, or you can put it in a pill pocket. Do keep S. Boulardii in mind if he does develop diarrhea - 2 capsules every 2 hours will stop it and will prevent/counter c. diff. I give 2 of my 3 cats some Renew Ultimate 30 Billion CFU every day - splitting the capsule between McGee and Anya every morning.

Thanks, everyone! What kind of syringes are 1 mil. ? I assume they don't have needles? I will get some probiotics tomorrow at the health food store.

Rusty vomited his dinner.

Off to bed now. Thinking of a better tomorrow.
 
When Fritz recently had pneumonia he was prescribed liquid Orbax he loved the taste and licked every drop of it off his plate and I gave it to him once a day.
 
Oh Rusty!!! You can't be sick!! We haz a party to plan and prepare for!! You getz better fast, you hear?? Dis time da deputy iz givin' da orders!! ~ China

So many cats can't tolerate clavamox....I wish it wasn't the "go to" antibiotic so many vets start with!! If the tummy upset continues, I'd be sure to ask for something else quickly!!

You should be able to get 1ml syringes from your vet or local pharmacy. They are pretty common. I used them to dispense Neko's buprenorphine. You can also get 3ml syringes if the dose is large enough. They are a bit wider which some find harder to give, but I got enough practice the last couple years it didn't make a difference.
 
Oh my, Rusty, pneumonia and not having happy appy is no fun at all. That pink gooey liquid is icky stuff but.....Please let your beans give you your meds so you can be feeling tip top again soon. If I could put up with that gunk, you can too!

I am so sorry to hear that Rusty has pneumonia! I am wishing you success in getting his medication into him, and many vines for a full recovery.
 
Prayers, prayers, and more prayers.

Since clavamox can really upset the tummy, in addition to probiotics, Rusty may need anti-nausea meds - either cerenia or ondansetron, or both.

The only thing that kinda sorta works for medicating our wild child Zen (yes, lots of irony in his name!) is for DH to sort of scruff him (just enough to get his front paws of the ground, and me to squirt the meds in the side of his mouth (and I approach from the side, too - not the front). Even at that, we have to be super-quick.

Lotsa vines for Rusty! And hugs for you and Edward. I hope Rusty is feeling better soon. Tillie had clavamox recently, pill form. She got a little diarrhea so we cut back on the miralax for a few days. She was already on ondansetron and cerenia. She gets one capsule of Everyday Ultimate Flora probiotic from Renew Life. I think they carry it at our Whole Foods.

Tried that. No go. I even had put some small pieces of pill pockets in his treat dish today in the hopes that he would eat them and like them. But he ate his freeze dried chicken and ignored the duck and pea pill pocket pieces! Tonight I tried wrapping the pill (it's such a tiny pill) in a piece of turkey. Another failure. So we tried the liquid again. Disaster!

So for pills, I always used the quick thrust , butter on the pill.... and just assertively get that pill in and pushed back as fast as I could.
And then a liquidy treat... like shrimp ( in Shadow's case) so she wouldn't hide from me the next time.

If it's the liquid, same thing, come from around the side, go in from side of mouth, and get it in....
if you hesitate or pull back, you lose....
 
Oh Rusty, feel better very soon. Take all your meds, they will make you feel better.

I use to give it when Smokey was sleeping. It was in him before he knew what was happening. Then of course a treat, a different one than the testing treat.

Hey Liz, When you give the capsule do you open it up and put it in Tillie's food? Does she get the whole capsule in one sitting, or do you add a little to her food over the course of the day? I just got some today and find that it is tasteless. I put a little into Rusty's food tonight (29 August). Up to now we were using a little FortiFlora in each food serving. But today Rusty started on another 14-day course of Convenia and I wanted to use something that is tasteless and that might have more pro-biotic potential. He's tired of FortiFlora in any event: it has a distinctive taste.

What I like about it (besides the fact that it smells like bacon...) is that it's very pliable--it's easy to wrap just a small amount of it around a pill--enough to prevent the cat from tasting it, but not so much that it feels like you're putting a marble in your kitty's mouth! Some cats who don't like Pill Pockets seem to like this stuff; the texture and smell are pretty different.

Yes, we open it and put it and cosequin in about a teaspoon of yogurt. She laps it right up.
