AMPS 418 and back up up up we go :(

Question: is there any way for me to know at this point if this bounce is all because of how low Callie went yesterday or whether me giving Callie two teaspoons of HC food when she went low yesterday is the reason she is up SO high today?

I was actually worried that the HC would bring her up really high yesterday... but it didn't seem to and all things considered, I was pretty happy with where she ended yesterday's day cycle (in the blues.) However, she has gone up steadily every time we have tested since PMPS.

I know that Bhooma emphasized the importance of keeping data on what food we feed when so we can look at patterns to figure out how carbs affect Callie and I will definitely continue to do that. As a more general question though-- is it possible for carbs to not affect cats' BG too much in the short term but then have a huge effect 15-20 hours after they've eaten them? Thanks for any insight.

Hope everyone has a good day :)

If you fed him high carb wet food, the answer is generally no. Cats have very high metabolisms, and so they process food very quickly. We know less about how long dry kibble stays in the system, but if you gave him wet food, what you are seeing is bouncing from low numbers, so don't worry, you didn't do anything wrong by feeding her HC. Since you had a 58 point dive yesterday you did the right thing. If you could get some medium carb food, somewhere in the range of 10-15% carb, you can experiment with that if she drops into the 50s again to see if that has a more subtle effect on her BGs. ECID, so there's no real way of knowing, and even as a cat gets regulated their carb sensitivity can change. In the first 6 months after Ruby got diagnosed, I would have to feed her 28% carb to get her up from low numbers, whereas these days I'm confident using 12%. That's why writing things down on the SS is helpful.

The high today is from her going low yesterday morning and has nothing to do with the HC you fed 2 cycles back. It's long out of the picture! :-)
She is just bouncing.

If you see, she bounced as high a couple of mornings back from green she saw the previous day and you had only fed a little MC.

Got it, thanks @PerfumedCatMom and @Bandit's Mom ! That's really helpful to know.

The HC I fed yesterday was wet. Callie did also eat a small handful of Young Again LC dry kernels throughout the day but that was really "a wash" because we give that amount throughout the day every day as a reward/ distraction for shots and post BG tests. We do also have some 13% wet food and I will definitely try to experiment more with that at the lower #s as I get a little more comfortable.

Back in a few mins with our +2... :)

How about finding a different treat than YA. Some cats see real improvement when they ditch all dry. Freeze dried lamb, salmon, or duck maybe? I see she eats Vital Essentials rabbit.
Thanks, we have been thinking about that a lot. I do believe that she would be better off without it entirely but am currently trying to balance that with Callie's allergies/asthma/EG/IBD stuff (after trying many LI foods/ select proteins over the years, we had her on hydrolyzed proteins which really helped with everything except her BG) and I also am hesitant to cut out dry food entirely so soon after making soooo many abrupt and stressful changes in her life (all of her food, multiple trips to the vet -- one resulting in the worst asthma attack she's ever had, lots of BG testing, shots, etc.) Callie, although very food motivated, gets sick of wet food and freeze-dried food/treats really easily and she LOVES dry/kibble type food so it can help us "motivate" her when none of her other food will.

We recently started Callie on Zyrtec hoping that will help with her allergies and we ordered a 5 strands testing kit to test for food and environmental sensitivities hoping that results will help us feel more comfortable introducing additional proteins/foods to Callie's diet, thereby helping us to increase variety and decrease boredom. We have so far been keeping to just a couple of different brands of wet and freeze-dried rabbit and a little lamb (plus the Young Again LI hydrolyzed pork) since she has had those in the past and hasn't seemed as reactive to them as she has been to other proteins.

Once Callie is more used to our new routines and we are able to offer different kinds of freeze-dried treats, I would very much like to cut out the dry food altogether. All a very long way of saying: that is absolutely the goal but we may need a little time to get there...

Ah ok, didn't realize you were giving her the hydrolyzed LI YA. That won't inflame her system as much as the regular YA would. Sounds like you've got it figured out and under control. :bighug:

373 @ +2 - we plan to get a +4 just to make sure that Callie isn't planning any surprises for us today...

Lol - wish I could say that I have anything figured out! But we have been around the block with her food stuff/allergies etc. unfortunately so we try to be careful whenever we decide to try something new. I do really appreciate you mentioning it though, in case it was something we hadn't had in mind. :bighug:

Allergies are so hard. One of my young girls has skin allergies and at the moment gets only venison. I worry all the time what I will do when (IF I hope never ) that becomes an issue.

They really are. Fingers and toes crossed that your little one can keep eating venison with no trouble :)

I know that it isn't generally encouraged to use different meters/ compare different meter results on an ongoing basis but we just received the Relion Monitor and plan to change over to it as our primary meter tomorrow and keep our One Touch only as a back-up (due to cost of test strips) so we wanted to do a couple of tests with both today to better understand our how the Relion numbers we get starting tomorrow line up with Callie's BG today/ tonight. I know Katherine said that she found Relion to show lower numbers than Contour Next and we just found the same when compared to One Touch: +6.75 Relion = 281 and One Touch = 362. I know that there is some variability built in but was a little surprised at how large a difference there was. I guess the gap is likely larger when the numbers are higher if the margin of error allowed is based on %.

Regardless, Callie's bounce continues...

I entered the One Touch number into Callie's SS and noted the switch to be effective tomorrow am.

Meter variance is 20% so there might not be as big a difference as it appears especially if one is reading high this time and the other low. Pick one and put the other in a drawer.

280 +2 - Not sure whether that means that it will be a quiet cycle like 2 nights ago or a wild one like yesterday day. Callie sometimes takes a little longer than +2 to decide...

We'll get a +4, which will hopefully tell us whether we should make some coffee and give Callie some higher carb food or whether we can go to bed...
