Got home late last night so shot was later than usual. Using new syringes - not sure if I like them and I am not sure if I gave the proper dose or if it wasn't a fur shot. I DO know that I don't like this number

Re: 8/14 Snoball AMPS=347 Boo Hiss

Hang in there, see what the rest of his cycle shows you. Could be a lot of reasons for the higher than usual amps, time will help you figure it out. Of course you may never, could just be one of 'those' things.

Edit: Just realized you aren't able to get midcycle tests very often. Without that data, it's pretty much impossible to tell why he had a higher preshot this morning. Many times I thought I had given a furshot, but later tests tell me differently. You just do what you can hon. What days are you usually off so you can get more tests in?

Re: 8/14 Snoball AMPS=347 Boo Hiss

I can only get mid-cycle tests in during the weekend. I usually try to stay home on Sundays so I like to get more test in then. I am running low on test strips so I need to do a Walmart run - I have to prepare for Walmart NOT to have them since this is common with this store. Thus, I am trying to be more conservative till the weekend. I don't like these new syringes. I may not be giving him enough insulin. I will get new ones this weekend as well.

Re: 8/14 Snoball AMPS=347 Boo Hiss

I make it a point to buy strips 2 vials at a time. When I open the 2nd one, I buy more on my next trip. Almost always have 1 unopened vial at any time. They are rarely on the floor, usually have to ask at the pharmacy. They keep most of them back there due to theft. So if I go when the pharmacy is closed, I may not get them. Just a heads up.

What is Snoball's shot times?

I've used the Walmart brand syringes since day 1, so they are all I know. What are you using?

We are back in the blues!!!!!

I have been a bit strapped since the insulin purchase this past weekend but was able to get strips and the Relion syringes that I really like at Walmart so I am all stocked up again.

I'm going to get some mid-cycle tests this evening. I usually shoot 6:30 am/pm (7am/pm on weekends). I get up at 5:30 am and start the whole thawing, testing, feeding, shooting, feeding again routine before I run out the door at 7. I tell people at work that I know exactly what new mothers feel like when they show up to work with one brown shoe and one black shoe. I'm lucky to have shoes on at all... After three and a half months, it is finally becoming more routine and less frenetic.

YAY!!! Snoball!! :RAHCAT

My only suggestion, I know you'll hate it, you need to keep the same shot times EVERY day. 30 mins may not seem like much, but everything I've read and been told, consistent shot times are terribly important. Maybe someone with more knowledge can explain why.

Getting a test before bed is perfect, whatever time you turn in. Every test is data that's needed. If for some reason you happen to get up once in a while, grab him and test him! I'm lucky in that aspect, because Lucian wakes me 2-3 times a night to eat, so if he wakes me, he gets poked! Last night, I gave him a break, I didn't test at all. That's about the 2nd time in months! But I test so much, I felt he was safe and could use a break. When we first started this dance, I never thought I'd be able to do what I do and was constantly getting b*tched at for not testing enough. I used to take meds for sleep, I quit so I would be able to deal with him. It was tough for a few weeks, but it's amazing what the body can adjust to. Keep in mind, I don't work, so I CAN sleep whenever, you can't, so do the best you can. If you can get 2 preshot tests and 1 or 2 before bed/at night, you'll do fine with extras on weekends and curves every couple weeks. Understand, the treatment you are giving him is a million times better than no treatment at all. At least he has a chance to live the rest of his life happy and healthy. He might not have that if not for you.

Big Hugz! :YMHUG:

Yes, I try to test more. Before bed is snack time for them so there is a lot of running around and up stairs and down stairs and cleaning up and then getting everyone settled and all on bad knees. Then its meds for me and I'm out so I can get up in the dark am and do it all over again. A before bed would be a +5. Not sure that is a relevant number. I really want to get a +6 soon but I just can't stay up that late or wake up for that. Lack of sleep = migraines. I've had three in the last six weeks so I have to be more careful.

I have to watch his ear also. He only allows for one to be tested so if it gets too blotchy I need to lay off. He also jerks if I try to test low on the ear so I have to stay near the tip. Curves are difficult without proper real estate so I don't like to do them every weekend but I want to see if this weekend I can get some +6 numbers. After all, we have to catch up to Lucian. He's our role model!

I was told I could move the shot times up by 15 min increments. I do that on Friday so that by Saturday the move is only 15 minutes. Otherwise I am not home from church in time in the evening for his pm shot to be on 12.

Thanks for all the support!

You might see if some of the secondary monitoring tools in my signature link might be helpful.

Even with more than 1 cat, if you monitor the water consumption by volume, you may see changes over time as you get better control.

If you use Purina Glucotest, it will show if blood glucose has reached the renal threshold (around 240 mg/dL) which tells you that at least part of the time, the glucose was higher than desirable for 1 or more cats.

Checking weight with a digital scale is a good way to keep tabs on all of the cats. Weekly is often enough.

He has his own litterbox so I monitor his pee site. His pee patch is much smaller than when he arrived. I am afraid to put anything in his litterbox because when I put in a different litter he found other places to pee - I am replacing a chair and a rug in December. I don't mess with his Cat Attract litter.

I can't really monitor water consumption because he doesn't drink out of a water bowl. He gets all his hydration from food. The only thing that shows he is diabetic is the weakness in his legs. He has gained a good amount of weight since he arrived ematiated. He is nearing 11 pounds now. His hind legs are straight up now but wobbly - especially going up and down the stairs. I am hoping to get a B-12 shot for him from the rescue group this weekend.

You have some indicators that he is improving - smaller pee, NOT drinking from a water bowl, and weight gain.

The difficulty standing and walking is possibly diabetic neuropathy and loss of muscle mass. To convince the rescue group of what may be helpful, refer them to Jasper's Story.
Be sure to explain that the B12 you want is methylcobalamin, not cyanocobalamin.
Sources include Zobaline, formulated specifically for cats.

Thanks BJ. The rescue rep has three diabetic fosters of her own so I am sure she has the proper B-12. Luckily, Sno is not as bad as poor Jasper. He has to stop half way up the stairs and I have seen a few tremors but I have also heard him running when he is alone upstairs.
