Good morning. Bear seems to be feeling those high numbers today. Very lethargic and wasn't excited about food (until he smelled it). Usually he is BEGGING for breakfast but DBF gave both cats about 1.5 oz snack (regular wet) around 4 AM so that may have something to do with it. At some point this morning he also threw up water all over the floor.... he has done that a few times when he drinks too much at once.

Re: 8/14 Bear AMPS 468

Hi Kimberly,

did you add some water to his food last nite?
Just a thought, my non-diabetic will toss her food if it's too watery.

Glad you cross posted in health.
I'm also wondering if Bear is bouncing, but would like others to weigh in too on what's happening.

Have you been checking for ketones too?

Re: 8/14 Bear AMPS 468

I tried to check for ketones yesterday when I saw him in the box but by the time I grabbed the strips he had finished his business. I am running a curve on him today so hopefully I will catch him.

Re: 8/14 Bear AMPS 468

I was just going to ask about the possibility of getting a curve today so I'm glad you're on top of it! I'm guessing Bear needs a dosecrease but I'd feel more comfortable with the suggestion knowing where his mid-cycle numbers are.

Coming down now...a low pink...maybe some nice yellows or blues today Bear?
Wondering when you had blood work done lately...have you had a T4 test done? How about a dental?

Re: 8/14 Bear AMPS 468 +2 370 +4 315

Never had a dental... Not sure what other bloodwork they did, we were very new at this last time we were at the vet. I'll have to try and find the papers.

Re: 8/14 Bear +10 217 12 HR curve, Dentals?

Read up on dentals and I see how they are very important.... am I really looking at paying $200 - 1000?? I apologize if that is a rude question, I am a little socially inept and sometimes I am not sure what is okay to ask other people and what isn't. If it's rude, no one needs to feel obligated to answer.

No need to apologize.
Yes I have heard dental can run in that range.
Maybe depending on your area, shop around - mind you if you go a any new vet,
you'll have to fork out preliminary regular check up too.

+10 looks nice, I hope Bear makes his way down a bit by PMPS, paws crossed!

Nice +10 Bear and as for dental cost that is going to vary from vet to vet my vet I work for is very affordable and if there are no extractions at our place you are looking at about 125.00 but all vets prices vary I would ask your vet about this when you get the chance I am sure they can give you a price quote.

Hooray, our first complete 12 hour curve is a success!

Re: 8/14 Bear PMPS 153 12 HR curve complete!

The prices on dentals vary depending on where you live and what needs to be done. I'm pretty sure my vet's basic charge is around $500 with nothing additional. Gabby's dental this week was about double that given that she had 2 crown amputations and an extraction. Unlike with people, a dental in cat's involves general anesthesia.

great job getting the curve done today. It looks like Bear had a bounce that cleared out today, that's why he went down all day. The PS is great, please get a +2 to be sure he's not still dropping.

Re: 8/14 Bear PMPS 153 12 HR curve complete!

Part of the price is the blood work and there can be additional charges if there are extractions....just like human dentists. I called so many places in my area and asked what they charge. Like Lisa, my vet is quite reasonable and I am so thankful! Shadow has had one Last August, last Feb and just a couple weeks ago again. He get heavy plaque buildup. Raja usually needs one per year.
By calling around, you might find one that is much cheaper than the others. (I know my vet is not paying for a beautiful office...LOL) But they get quite a crowd there because of the reasonable prices.

Re: 8/14 Bear PMPS 153 12 HR curve complete!

One of the few advantages of not living in a big city is we don't pay big-city prices for dentals. If you're planning to switch vets, and if you're doing bloodwork, you can try to time the bloodwork and dental so that they fall within the same time frame. I think at AHDC they accept the same bloodwork for 2 or 3 months - you can ask when you call to make an appointment, if you decide to go there. You can ask at the initial exam what Dr S thinks of his teeth, and what grade dental he thinks it would be. (Although sometimes the need for extractions isn't discovered until kitty is under and a better oral exam can be done)

Cali just had her dental cleaning a few weeks ago. IIRC, her b/w was around $120, and the estimate for her dental cleaning was less than $200 without extractions. (I wonder if Dr S took pity on me and gave me a price break - I ended up paying $100+ (less than $150) when I picked her up.) Extractions will cost more, of course. How old is Bear?

My coworker who takes his cat to a West Shore place had an estimate of about $300; another coworker who goes to Silver Spring (part of your CPAC group) paid around $200+ to $300 as well, I think. I can check with this coworker on Monday if you like, if you wish to stay with CPAC.
