Good evening all!

We went to the vet today for Tarragon's asthma. He was previously on Flovent and Singulair. The Singulair is not working so she discontinued that and switched to Albuterol. Any of you asthma kitty beans out there use Albuterol? Sherry? Took blood work and a urine sample since it had been 7 months. I will get the results Monday. Tarragon is up to 10 1/2 pounds so YAY! He was 7 at diagnosis. Also, the vet doesn't think he needs a dental yet. She did put him on antibiotics for snow bleeding gums, which I am still not clear on.

Hope you all have a great evening!

It sounds like it was an ok vet visit. Your PMPS doesn't look bad - I like yellow. Hope the Albuterol works for Tarragon. Have a good evening Melissa.

hi - I am glad all went well at the vet. I have no experience with asthma, so can't help there. Not too sure on the AB for for slow bleeding gums either. ??

Not too bad of a pmps, what with a vet trip in there. have a great night guys!

Tarragon - oh no!! You went to the vetty? You need the KTSS to come and remove the vetty smell? We could help you out on the bus as we head on over to camp stu for the full moon party. see you then? ~~ Mannie

Try salt water on his gums. Safer than an antibiotic. Will he let you swab them with a gauze pad?
Good luck with the new medicine.
Don't forget the Full Moon Party at Camp Stu tonight!!

Hi Melissa!

Albuterol is usually only used as a rescue drug or if kitty is really congested/wheezing you can give a puff of albuterol a few minutes before the flovent. Albuterol is a broncho-dialator.....doesn't treat the inflammation of asthma. If you give albuterol first, then a puff or 2 of flovent....the albueterol will open up the airways allowing the flovent to get into the lungs and work better. I have had to use this with Zoe occas. I wouldn't drop the flovent, because that is what fights the inflammation. How many puffs of flovent does T get each day? And what strength? Zoe gets 2 puffs, twice a day of 220 mcg....so 4 puffs each day....and she has been cough free for over a year (anti-jinx)!!!

Have you tried Claritin with T for congestion?

Sherry

Unfortunately I have no ideas on either the antibiotics or the asthma meds, but wanted to stop by and say "hi"! I hope you guys are having a great weekend!!!

We did what Sherry and Zoe posted above to manage Maverick's asthma. A lot of vets underdose flovent also. Maverick was managed on 250mcg twice a day. His vet wouldn't authorize more than 125mcg. The feline inhaled meds forum on yahoo helped a lot. It stopped Maverick's coughing.

Hi Melissa

I second what Sherry said. Curry is at the max dose of flovent too. Last Dec we needed to give apuff of albuterol before the flovent for a short period.

Hope T begins to have less coughing soon.

Hugs
Tena and Curry

Thanks guys! That helped a lot. I am keeping the Flovent and just going to give the Albuterol to get his airways opened up until he clears this spell. I am holding off on the antibiotics as well until we get the test results back.

So you are going to keep giving the flovent? Just wanted to double check. The flovent is given twice a day - did you guys give more than this? I was told I could use the Albuterol through the day as a rescue drug but Maverick never needed that once we increased the flovent.

Hi Melissa: good report from the vet and it looks like our wise folks in LL with asthma experience have been helping out. I hope it helps his coughing. Poor boy!!! He's so very handsome. I'm sorry that he has asthma.

Hope you all have a great night....and that it's getting a little cooler there????

It is cooler. We have had rain got the last few nights and it has been mid 90's during the day and 70's at night. Unfortunately it will be back in the 100's this week.

Hey Melissa, the 125 is probably too low for T. 125 is usually not enough exceot for the mildest cases of asthma in kitties. Can you double it for right now? Maybe give him 2 puffs twice a day?

Sherry

I can. I think you are right. He shouldn't be having this many issues. Thank you for your input Sherry, Karrie, and Tena. Asthma is so scary with the kitties. I appreciate all of you at LL so much. I'm not sure how I would get through all this without a group like this.

Maverick was well controlled on the 125 dose but he started coughing again. He coughed for four months even with the albuterol. The vet didn't know how flovent worked. Within a week or two I can't remember of increasing him to two puffs twice a day his coughing stopped. I wish I had listed to the asthma group before then but his vet was a real bully. You can get a script for a puffer that is 250mcg and save a small fortune if it does work for Tarragon. I didn't realize they came in that dose and just kept doing the double puffs of the 125.

Some of the people in the US save money on their puffers ordering it from a place called four corners or something like that. I never got around to looking into it.

Hey Melissa, sorry to hear Tarragon is still having asthma problems. I never realized how many kitties have asthma issues! I hope the info you got here helps your little man out and gets him feeling better ASAP!

Have a great evening!
