Hi all,

Sorry I've not been around much the last couple of days. Busy at work and not feeling my best...enough about me though! A couple nights ago, I think we allowed Johnny to get too low. :( We got the 60 reading and it was really late. Brian said to go to bed and he'd retest. He's said the same before lots of times (nice that he's not working right now pending starting classes in the fall) and all was fine. This time, he accidentally just crashed on the couch with no alarm set. It happens, I guess, but I wish it hadn't.

Is catnip okay for our DB kitties? It was a long-time ritual to put out some catnip for the kitties on Friday night, you know to celebrate the end of their horrendous work week. Ha! I don't think we've done it since the dx and we just thought of it. Johnny likes to nibble at it and later roll around in it. Thought I'd better check to see if it's a no-no. I hope not, he loves it!

Big weekend ahead for Fritz (civvie). This is the Air & Water Show weekend around here which involves LOUD fighter jets overhead for 6 hours on Sat and Sun. Plus, they practiced a few days this week. Fritz was afraid and hiding for hours. The other two seem okay with it, but alarmed for the bigger, closer noises...and then back to normal. I personally HATE this show and it makes me on edge all weekend. The sounds rip through my whole body and make my heart beat out of my chest. Doesn't help that the buildings shake too. Sigh. I hate being forced to "attend" something that I don't want to! See I'm crabby. Probably good I haven't been around!

Thanks for any advice on the catnip front.

Re: 8/13 Johnny AMBG 83 PMBG 169 - Catnip?

Catnip is fine. It's not like they eat a cup of the stuff.

I'm very lucky that my windows are well insulated since I'm about 2 blocks from Navy Pier. I can deal with the noise from the Blue Angels. I hate the crowds. Whenever there are big events like this, the city is overrun and if you live here, getting even the basic errands done tries my patience to no end.

Were you able to get the pen?

Re: 8/13 Johnny AMBG 83 PMBG 169 - Catnip?

Johnny thanks you for the green light on the catnip!

That's nice you don't hear the jets so much! It's all just such a nuisance. Crowds. Traffic. Like you said, everyone is inconvenienced. Simple errands take exponentially longer.

Didn't get the pen yet. The vet who originally answered the question via the phone-answerer called back yesterday. She called at like 7:30 and I was still asleep. I heard the message (half-asleep) and then accidentally deleted it. So, I don't remember everything (thinking I'd re-listen later). She didn't recommend the pen. She was worried about us not being able to measure the dose appropriately with it and something about contamination and that the vial was our better choice for x,y,z reasons...not one mention that you can use your own syringe to draw from it. She also mentioned that our vial of Glargine (and said that was the same as Lantus, which I knew, haha) should still be fine and that the vet that we usually see was on vacation this week and back tomorrow. I'll call tomorrow.

Do you think Johnny's numbers are indicative of aging Lantus, Sienne?

it's not too late to shoot, you're not really on a schedule (I'm sure he won't need another shot 12 hours from now, so it really doesn't matter). The only thing is that you'll want to think about your ability to monitor if he drops.

I don't think it's too late unless you're worried about your ability to monitor. I don't know how late you typically stay up. If you're concerned about being awake, then yes, I'd hold off. What I would do is give Johnny something to much on and see if he brings his numbers down.

I think you're getting a response from the insulin. I'd be more comfortable having some of the more experienced people here take a look since they have more better at sorting out whether insulin is toasty than I am. I don't think you're getting an inconsistent response to the insulin -- Johnny's numbers come down when you give insulin. If insulin is old, the response is inconsistent.

I don't buy the vets response regarding the pen. you use the insulin needles to draw out from the pen so your measurements are the same. There would be no difference in "contamination" except the pen wouldn't have as much in it as the vial - I still think the pen is the way to go personally.

Cute graphic, Ronnie!

We didn't give catnip tonight. We're saving the excitement for tomorrow mid-morning. Hopefully it will help relax Fritz for the inevitable fighter jets buzzing our building!

If we shoot tonight, we're likely looking at a 3-5 a.m. drop. I just don't think we're up for that tonight...we'll test again in a bit. Maybe we did so right when some food was hitting? I don't think so, though, because I heard Brian starting to feed them (at their request) when I yelled down to get a number. Maybe the food will help. I didn't know that feeding could lower the numbers??

For the record, I don't think your insulin is toast, after seeing the last drop was 4 cycles ago.

Did he get HC today?

No HC today for sure. Thanks for the input about the insulin! It just seems like he's not progressing like he was.
