My poor guy has had a bummer of a week since his OTJ party on Saturday. I took him back today for his follow up UTI appt and he still has it and it's gotten worse. :( Vet has him on Zeniquin 50 mg twice a day for 2 weeks. Anyone ever used this? Any feedback?

He also has an eye infection and they put him on Terramycin ointment once a day for 7 days. He hasn't been eating well the past few days, assuming it's because he feels so yucky, but I'm still worried for him. He's lost another 1/2 pound since his last appointment last Wednesday, which seems like so much. He's down to 20 pounds (from 23 pounds) at the beginning of July. Does that seem okay? I want him to lose weight, but am worried he's doing it too fast.

Am I just being an over-protective mom? Help!

I'm so sorry to hear Hardey isn't feeling well. I hope the Zeniquin works, though I know nothing about it. As far as his eating: have your tried some of the suggested ways, here on FDMB, to entice a cat to eat? I'll find the list for you and post it. Also, have you had him on a diet previously? Cats are like people where are weight can fluctuate a bit during the course of a day.... I would suggest getting a scale (if you don't already have one) and weighing him every week, and note same on his SS....

(copied and pasted from a google doc found on board....)

Enticing your cat to eat

Here are some things you can do do entice your cat to eat:

sometimes in order to get a cat to eat you even have to resort to dry it is more important that they eat. there are a couple low carb / grain free brands -- EVO and wellness core. (my edit: Young Again Zero Carb dry)
making a buffet to give him choices
heating food

Sprinkle food with :

FortiFlora -- a probiotic you can get at vets or online. is very smelly and cats love the taste of it.
parmesan cheese, other cheeses
smashed crumbles of dry food
bonito/tuna flakes (Asian markets or Asian food section in grocery stores)
Freeze dried treats (Halo, pure bites) -- crumble into dust over food. Chicken or liver flavours.
pour a little water from tuna in water over food (I use low sodium/no sodium added as other kinds in water has veg. broth in it and I assume that means onions, which are toxic to cats and it shouldn't contain soy -- check labels)
powdered oregano. yep sounds weird . but some cats like it and it will entice them to eat.
Small amounts of buttery cookies, white cake, butter, mayonnaise, cheesy poof chips (any forbidden food that they love)
Olives/olives juice

Other ideas of foods to offer your kitty to stim appy:

trader joe tuna for cats
baby food -- beechnut or Gerber Stage 2 -- you want a baby food that is only a protein + broth (although the Gerber contains cornstarch). It should have no onions or other additives. some babyfoods have onions . please read labels if you can't find beechnut.
kentucky fried chicken KFC
deli meats ie turkey /chicken
plain cooked (boiled or baked) chicken breast (or beef, ham, turkey, pork, steak, bacon)
Raw - whole meats, rinsed well or partially baked
canned chicken for people (watch the label that their are no onions)
chicken broth -- low sodium
olive oil/ warm milk (sparingly), kitty milk, cream, ice cream
Selection of canned foods (buy a can of everything!)

1-2% weight loss per week is a safe amount to lose.

The 8 ounces is a bit fast, more like 3% loss.

Hope you can entice him to eat more.

I haven't used zeniquin but I think it is commonly used for UTIs in cats. I'm curious....he was on an a/b and then they recultured his urine and it still has bacteria?

Have they done an u/s to see if he actually has a kidney infection instead of a UTI? How did they dx it?

Thanks Bowhuntress. I'll try a few of those ideas. He has a very sensitive tummy - every time I change his food (even to another flavor of FF or Friskies), he gets the runs. He does like the pure bites chicken as a treat. I'll try breaking it up into powder on top of his food. I tried the liver one - he LOVED it, but boy did I have mess the next day.... I actually had been thinking of getting a scale. Any idea where would be the best place to buy one? Am I looking for a baby scale?

Deb and Wink - thanks for the happy thoughts. I know Hardey really appreciates it when everyone is fawning over him. He's quite the attention-hog. I'll try some ways to make him eat more. He's never been a fussy cat, and he loves his wet food, so hopefully once the pills kick in, he'll get his appetite back.

Marje and Gracie - he had an injection of an antibiotic two weeks ago. I was sure it was gone. He's been playing and feeling well. It's just been the past day or so that he looked kind of icky. Vet didn't culture the urine. She said that the past few times she has cultured lately, it has come back negative and she didn't want to waste my money ($145), so she thought we could try the pill and go from there. She didn't say anything about a kidney infection. She took the urine with a needle from his bladder, so it should be a good sample.

Since his eyes are infected (and in turn, he has a stuffy nose), that might also be affecting his appetite. Either way, we'll get this figured out and hopefully he can stop visiting the vet all the time. He HATES going there.

You want a digital baby scale (and batteries!). Try Craigslist or 2nd hand baby supply stores. Maybe try E-bay.
