Curiouser and curiouser. And yes, at times I feel I've fallen down the rabbit hole! Only I'm no Alice and we're sure not in Wonderland! I look at Polly's spreadsheet and just can't figure much out. Kind of like those SAT math questions when I was supposed to look at a progression of numbers and then supply the missing number based on the pattern. Couldn't do those either!

Oh well. We just do the best we can.

Hairball in the neighborhood this morning. Probably Polly. She's been grooming lots and I've been combing too little. Easy to tell hairballs from barf and scarf. The dog's not interested in hairballs!

Morning Marilyn - nice promising start from Polly today. You might want to track when you see hairballs from Polly on your SS. Some people find that their kitties numbers rise up a bit until they get rid of the hairball. Love your "pup" test - sure fire way to see what's what. :lol:

BTW, the acro/IAA combo does require a bit of head twisting when looking at spreadsheets. It took me the longest time before I could figure out on my own whether it was a time for increase or hold for Neko.

Marilyn, I agree with Wendy. The IAA/acro really messes up what a "normal" SS looks like. I'm not great at interpreting the spreadsheets. It just looks like a lot of colors. Sometimes, if I really focus, I can see where we had some NDW. But until Cobb got to a dose he liked on the Lantus, it just looked like we were all over the map with no rhyme or reason. The IAA/acros is the rhyme and reason, unfortunately. There's just not a good enough explanation beyond that, in my opinion.

But I did look at your SS and it looks (to me) like Polly is clearing the bounce from the blue numbers she saw on Sunday. It looks like her body just isn't quite used to numbers under 200 just yet. And then the antibodies are fighting back as well. But I see blues and a few greens, followed by pink, and then a string of yellow. I interpret the pinks as a bounce, and the yellows where the antibodies grabbed back hold. Others may disagree with me...that's just my theory. :-D

Some info from the IAA side of the house that may help you understand part of why Pollys ss differs from a kitty without IAA:

• Injected insulin first gets bound to the antibodies. Any insulin that does not get bound goes toward metabolizing sugars. How much goes to antibodies and how much goes to metabolizing sugars is anybody’s guess and a moving target

• IAA can retard the initial rise of available insulin after an injection. Something to remember if you ever decide to use the fast acting insulin R as a bolus.

• IAA can lead to an increase in the half-life of free (unbound) insulin in circulation because some bound insulin gets released back into circulation. The increase in half-life can lead to prolongation of action.

• The release of insulin from the antibodies can happen at inopportune times

Being that Pollys IAA is not extreme, any effects from any of the above are likely to be subtle.
Unfortunately IAA activity can't be quantified in real time. Same with the rate and timing of hormone output from the tumor responsible for Acro.
However these are important variables to be considered when attempting to interpreting the ss of a kitty with IAA, Acro or both.

For IAA and Acro kitties it would be cool if there was a meter that along with reading BG could read how much free insulin is in circulation at any given time.
But since there is not the best thing to do is be mindful of the reasons Pollys ss differs from a kitty that does not have a HD condition and 'go with the flow'.

Yea for blue for Polly again! It is much trickier for you, but I hope she will breakthrough soon. She now has to get used to the lower numbers also.

September 8. Miss Polly debuts at CSU for preliminary work up prior to SRT. (It's the only week my boss asked me to avoid since they'll be out of town, but I called and sounded so pathetic that she gave the o.k.)

They want recent bloodwork, urinalysis, chest x-ray, echo results faxed along with the MSU findings. Also the spreadsheet. And her toothlessness...not a problem. Whew, I thought we'd have to sneak implants in the mix, too.

Now, send any light you can spare that she takes to travel as well as she's taken to the pokes and sticks and attendant snuggles of this sugar dance.

I'm excited. I'm scared. I think excitement wins.

Plus, I'm steeling myself for the lowest preshot number I've encountered... unless she climbs a bit by then. What an afternoon.

you will be in the best possible hands there. If anyone knows acromegaly, it's them. When I turned punkin over to them the first morning, I thought "so this is what it's like to have confidence in someone else's competence!"

I don't think you will be sorry. Even though punkin didn't go OTJ, it greatly diminished his dose needs and it prevented further damage to his body. that was really important to me.

Nice day for Polly today. My only observation is that at she is surfing from +8 to +10 at least, so you're not shooting a dropping number or a bounce clearing cycle. Hopefully she will just continue on flat.

My other observation is that Polly's patterns are her own and haven't changed just because she got the diagnosis. So if she had this number range at preshot a month ago, and you'd shot it, her responses are likely to be similar today. I don't have her ss open to see if you've shot a low blue before, but i think you have.

hehe way to win the boss over. :-D

Sweet set of blues today for Polly. :-D Acros often have later nadirs, Neko does and looks like Polly does sometimes too.

I think Sandy gave the best advice on the spreadsheet, you just have to go with the flow. There are too many random variables with IAA insulin binding/release and acromegaly output but over time you will see some patterns.

Yeah for getting CSU setup! It'll be one great big adventure. I second what Julie says about being impressed with the staff there. We stayed at the Homewood Suites and there were several other furkids staying there too. Hotel staff in the area are used to people staying there to go to CSU. Sending tons of good traveling vines your way. I hope you are as pleasantly surprised at how well Polly does long distance travel as we were. I know once I'd decided to get SRT done and started organizing things, I started getting excited about the whole trip. Both DH and I have science backgrounds and the last day they gave us a tour of the SRT machine room and their radiation planning software and we were both impressed. Write down all your questions as you think of them now - you'll have plenty of time to get them answered. I used a recording app on DH's iPad - there was so much information coming at us.
