Lucky is on his way home from the Vet right now after his dental today. My husband is picking him up! He had 1 tooth extracted, which is better than the 3 that the vet quoted :?

I didn't give his morning insulin and the vet called at 11:30am to tell me that his BG was 544 and they needed the insulin to go ahead and give him. I wish they would have just let me give it to him as scheduled  He was already up to almost 300 at 7am.

So, that's just an update! I'm anxious to see how he does now that this is over with. I got some kitty toothpaste so we are going to try brushing all 3 kitties teeth from now on...wish me luck! (anyone have any advice on that???!!)

Glad he only had one tooth extracted. I can't imagine brushing any of my cats teeth. I tried to do my dogs but they weren't having any parts of that! Good luck!

So glad he is having only one tooth extracted, Shakes had 5 on Monday and
took all week to recover!

Please make sure to take pictures of you brushing their teeth!
I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to see that!!!

GOOD LUCK!!

I tried brushing my three cats teeth and it was a disaster. Maybe invest in some falconer gloves
I had a Manx cat in the 90's that loved his teeth brushed.
You are supposed to start slow by lifting one corner of their mouth and rubbing their gums with a soft cloth just for a few seconds and quit for the day. You do this a few days to get them used to that, then add a little of the chicken or fish flavored paste and repeat that a few days. Then when they seem used to the feel of the cloth and pet toothpaste, try some of the paste on a soft finger toothbrush; don't overdo, just do around the gums of a few teeth a day on one side, then gradually increase brushing time. If they start pulling away, quit for the day. After they really get used to the finger brush, you can introduce the longer soft bristled pet toothbrush. The key is go slow and don't frighten them.
My other 2 before the cats I have now were easy to get used to the finger brush, but not my three now.
Good luck!
One other thing, don't let the vet sell you the mouth rinse for tartar that you add to their drinking water. I bought some for Henry after his dental on July 14 to add to keep plaque from building up and his numbers shot up and stayed flat after a few days of it. Then I looked at the ingredients on the label and it contained Xylitol, which is a extract of a sugar alcohol and not very good for pets to ingest and surely can't be good for sugarcats!

ROFL!!

I know, I know...I don't know HOW I'm going to brush these cats teeth! They are old and set in their ways! When the vet pretty much told me to do it, I kind of laughed and said Ooooo-kay, I'll try! (I did however toilet train 2 kitties years ago. My oldest

Thanks so much for the advice, Angela! The paste I got is Poultry flavored and the first thing I did was look at the ingredients. It has Sorbitol, Dextrose and Glucose Oxidase....all of which I'm pretty sure is not good for a diabetic. Any thoughts on this?
