DC still won't eat his canned food. Broke down and gave some kibble. He ate about 1/8 cup.
Tested for keytones. Negative. First time I've tested for them, all past tests were done by vet.
It was easier than I expected.
He is still more playful than usual and just as cuddley as always.

I think the hardest part of testing for ketones is catching your kitty in the litter box!

Numbers are looking good so far. As far as food, if you haven't had a chance yet, take a look at Lisa Pierson, DVM's website on feline nutrition. She has a great section on how to transition a cat from dry food to canned.

good luck trying to change your DC's diet. I also had a struggle but eventually we got both my cats off dry for good. Hang in there

Hi Noreen,

Dr Lisa's website is really good for info on the food transistion.
You know you can always try mixing a bit of seafood flavours too.
It's very rare for a cat to turn down fishy's :lol:
it tends to get addictive to them, like the kitty crack, but you can get results. :-D

Good job catching zilch ketones!

Happy you got the ketone test! Good job! I didn't know any better so I just got them to go cold turkey. Raja was my carbo freak and she accepted the canned just fine. Have you tried the freeze-dried chicken on top? Sorry if I am repeating myself but most kitties love that stuff!

Neither one of my cats likes the fish flavors. At least they are now both eating Wellness and EVO kibble which is fairly low in carbs.
At this point DC sometimes will eat between 1/8 and 1/4 cup of canned. But if I remove the dry he won't touch the wet food either.
And they don't like the Forti Flora.
DC has gone more than 18 hours without eating if I remove the dry and Frisky (my non-diabetic cat) has gone over 24 hours.
Frisky will not touch wet food at all.
I've tried the freeze-dried chicken and actual chicken and they won't touch either. The only real food DC loves to eat is beef jerky and steamed rice.
I don't like to feed him either, but he'll grab the beef jerky right out of your hand if you let him. As for the rice, he has knocked the lid off the pot and eaten it.
I have looked at Dr. Lisa's website and am trying to follow it.

Testing for ketones was easy. DC tends to play at the litter box before he goes in and spends about 5 minutes moving the litter around before he uses it.
I took the lid off and when I heard him playing in it, I caught him. Just stuck the test strip behind. No problem.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble changing their diets, but at the same time, I'm comforted to know I'm not alone. Muffin won't touch canned food either yet. She will eat real chicken (breast only, doesn't like thighs or ground) but not the freeze dried, and won't touch the lower carb dry foods either. Her favorite food is Taco Bell! But she likes turkey lunch meat and scrambled eggs too. She likes the Fortiflora, and prefers her dry food be sprinkled with that, but it doesn't help in the least with getting her to eat what I want her to eat. I'm running out of tricks from Dr Lisa to try - parmesan cheese didn't work either. She's making me CRAZY!

It's nice to know we're not alone. My cats don't eat any normal food and they are both very picky on the flavors of cat food.
DC eats mostly chicken, turkey and beef flavors. Frisky is worse, he'll only eat chicken flavor. With Frisky, even when you
change brands he usually won't eat. Where as DC thinks a new brand is a treat. I have a hard time getting him to eat the
Wellness kibble from his bowl, but if I give it to him in my hand he thinks it's a treat and will eat it and cry for more.
He will eat the EVO kibble though.

I'm guessing the Lantus is working as it should. DC's lowest BG is 6 hours after his shot.

looking good for the first few days!

just wanted to share a little trick that helped to transition one of my very, very stubborn dry food addicts in case you haven't tried it...
i threw some of the dry food into a processor and ground the kibble into dust. i sprinkled the dust on top of canned food. it helped. at least he was interested in eating some of it. :-D

some kitties take to canned food right away and some seem to take forever. it took almost 4 long months (seemed like an eternity) before my dry food addict completely transitioned to wet food. have patience. if you don't give up it'll happen eventually...
 
DC now has the highest BG sine stating Lantus. Hopefully he will be lower in the morning.

AMPS = 295

+6 = 198
+9 = 252
PMPS = 407
