Re: 8/12 Bear AMPS 183 Constipation?

We just switched from the Friskies to the Purina Proplan and I didn't think it would be too much of a problem to switch from one wet food to another. Apparently it was because now Bear seems to be constipated.... Advice?

Besides the constipation, I am happy to report that Bear seems to be feeling A LOT better! He has his spunk back and doesn't just lay around. He's not so passive about ear pokes anymore either!!

I think this is pretty common when you switch foods too.

ETA: others usually use Miralax, mixed in food and a bit of water. I believe it's available in most pharmacies.
If you can check back, others may offer some input on how much your kitty needs.
Or you can cross post in the health forum for other options too.

Purina Pro Plan, is this wet food? Did you find it on the food charts?
Do you know the carb numbers?

Re: 8/12 Bear AMPS 183 Constipation?

My Curry got constipated..tummy ache...didn't even want the canned when she was first dx and switched from dry to canned....Vet gave me Lax'aire...laxative petro jelly that had cod liver oil and soybean oil....works wonders and both cats love it. They had both tried laxtone a year or two ago and hated it...this they love and lick it right off my finger. It lubes the intestine...And worked like a charm.

I'm sure there are other treatments for constipation that folks here can recommend.

The proplan is on the old Janet and Binky chart with a 2 for carbs.

Re: 8/12 Bear AMPS 183 +10 136 Constipation?

Are you adding warm water to the food? That is always good to do....

I have heard people recommend tuna oil...from the can...they usually love to lap that right up! I have used that in the past...

look at those BGs :) glad he's feeling better!

constipated how? dry and hard? less output or no output? is he straining in the litterbox?

if he doesn't mind soupy food, you can try adding a little water to his food. moisture is helpful.

Re: 8/12 Bear AMPS 183 +10 136 PMPS 133 Constipation?

poor Bear, I hope he feels better soon. I have used Miralax with Lucy and it works well for her. I just mix 1/8 tsp into her food twice a day, and add extra water.

Really great numbers today.

Awesome day of blues! Beautiful.

Like Libby, we use Miralax and extra water, helps keep things soft. You can get it in most pharmacies - Weis, Walmart, Target, even our local grocery store has it.
